Editor's Notes
Moving on to Twitter. As I wrote in my first book, when Twitter launched I thought it was a joke. At that time I didn’t understand what the value would be of an online site where you can post short statements about whatever comes to mind. Who really cares what I’m eating for lunch or whether I’m standing in line at the store. Over the past few years I’ve learned that Twitter is probably the most important of the online social networks.Twitter has more than 500 million users. One of the interesting things about Twitter is that it isn’t really a social network like most people think. It’s more of a blog. With Facebook there is a follow:follow-back connection. You connect to me, I connect to you. We share information. We like and comment on each other’s posts. It’s more interactive, more friendly. With Twitter, you put information out there and people can choose to interact with it or not. Twitter is also the 3rd largest search engine on the Internet. Now why is that important? The difference between Twitter and Google as far as search goes, with Google, the information you find could be from 10 years ago. With Twitter, when you search, the information you find is from 10 minutes ago. So why is THAT important? It’s important because when you understand what people are saying about you and your company right now you can take action right now by engaging their comments and maybe turning them into a customer or changing their mind about something.
