20 Best Selling Children’s Books of All Time
newbooksusa.com/blog/best-selling-childrens-books
To honor the Best Selling children’s Books for young adults and children, TIME compiled this survey in consultation with respected peers
such as U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt, children’s book historian Leonard Marcus, the National Center for Children’s Illustrated
Literature, the Young Readers Center at the Library of Congress, the Every Child a Reader literacy foundation and 10 independent booksellers.
By the grace of Almighty Allah, we’re living in a golden age of influential books for young adults,
when books apparently written for teens are equally adored by readers of every generation.
In the likes of Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen, they’ve produced characters and conceits that have become the currency of our pop-culture
discourse—and inspired some of our best writers to contribute to the group.

takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.
Though Harry’s first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect.
There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it’s his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil
hands.
But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.
Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an

WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS
Author: SHEL SILVERSTEIN
$10.25
6/11
This book falls #9 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
Shel Silverstein, the New York Times bestselling author of The Giving Tree,
I have always loved this story. With the adult coloring craze still going on and storybook coloring books becoming a
big deal I decided to pick up a copy of The Giving Tree that I would color to give to my kids and future grandkids.
This edition is perfect for that purpose.

SCUFFY THE TUGBOAT
Author: GERTRUDE CRAMPTON
$4.72
This book falls #12 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
One of the most beloved children’s stories ever—the classic Little Golden Book tale of Scuffy, an adventurous little
tugboat.
This was one of my favorite books growing up, and now I enjoy reading it to my kids.
It’s the story of a toy tugboat who wants adventure and believes he “was meant for bigger things” but eventually realizes that home is exactly the
right place for him.
The illustrations are wonderful and show kids many different environments – all the way from a rural brook with cows in it to a bustling seaport
at the edge of the ocean, and everything in between.
Highly recommended if you enjoy sharing timeless stories and beautiful illustrations with your little ones.
Best Selling Children’s Book #13
THE SAGGY BAGGY ELEPHANT
Author: KATHRYN AND BYRON JACKSON
$4.99
This book falls #13 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
I remember this book, even though it must be at least 58 years since I read it!
I didn’t think it would still be in print, but here it is, and with good reason: the message is timeless – don’t be
ashamed of who you are; don’t listen to what others say about you.
So I bought it and loved it all over again. I want to pass it on to my grandchildren, but not yet.
I am still enjoying the story and the pictures. But once I do, maybe in another 58 years my grandchildren can pass it on to theirs!
Best Selling Children’s Book #14
8/11
PAT THE BUNNY
Author: DOROTHY KUNHARDT
$11.03
This book falls #14 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
A book targeted at very young children, Pat the Bunny is the highest-selling touch and feels the book of all time
reaching individual sales of 7,562,710 units by 2001.
Best Selling Children’s Book #15
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
Author: J.K. ROWLING
$27.83
This book falls #15 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
The reader will never find a boring or uninteresting moment in The Goblet of Fire and I never get sick of reading
it again and again as it’s so easy to lose myself in Harry Potter with the astounding events and distinctive characters.
Anyone who hasn’t read up to The Goblet of Fire should definitely rethink that decision as this is the book where it
all changes and it’s then impossible to not continue reading the rest of the books.
Best Selling Children’s Book #16
9/11
GREEN EGGS AND HAM
Author: DR. SEUSS
$8.69
This book falls #16 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
Little aged readers love this book for its simple words fun story, and silly didactic rhythm of the poem, which helps
young readers to learn and remember.
Additionally, it enforces the lesson to try something, even if it looks weird, you may like them! You cannot say you
don’t like something until you have tried it!
Best Selling Children’s Book #17
TOOTLE
Author: GERTRUDE CRAMPTON
$29.95
This book falls #17 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
Yet another Little Golden Book, Tootle is a classic story about a train’s exciting adventures that children seem to
endlessly enjoy with sales, by 2001, reaching 8,560,277 units.
Best Selling Children’s Book #18
THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT
BY BEATRIX POTTER
$11.99
This book falls #18 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
In my opinion, this is one of the finest children’s stories ever written.
My mother read it to me, and her mother read it to her. Her mother read it to the children of her graduate school
professor when she baby-sat them in the teens of the twentieth century.
It is a story every child should read. This is the edition with Beatrix Potter’s own illustrations. Do not buy any other,
since they are part of the story, and it is impossible to outdo them.
Best Selling Children’s Book #19
10/11
THE POKY LITTLE PUPPY
Author: JANETTE SEBRING LOWREY
$17.80
This book falls #19 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
THE POKY LITTLE PUPPY was one of my favorite stories growing up, and I’m not sure if I still have the old
copy tucked away at my folks’ house or not, so I had to order a new copy.
It is not easy to build a book that is as focused as this one. The art, the amount of text on each page, the plot
development, the beat and rhythm of the language, and the color scheme of the art.
This book is a specimen of an era when a lot of effort went into kid’s entertainment, not to make it overdone, but to make it just right.
Much like the porridge ultimately enjoyed by Goldilocks, “Poky Little Puppy” is a classic because it is just right.
Best Selling Children’s Book #20
HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS
Author: J.K. ROWLING
$19.07
This book falls #20 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books.
The Chamber of Secrets is a great read compared to 90% of other books in general, and 99% of other children’s
fantasy novels. The art in this book is simply amazing.
They add to the story subtly, rather than take the story over as the movies did. To me, this is vital, as part of the joy
of the Harry Potter world is the evocation of your imagination.
I am happy to give my kids a little push with art, as they clearly still create their own images of quidditch, Hagrid, and the often explosive and
unexpected effects of Ron’s broken wand.

20 best selling childrens books of all time

  • 1. 20 Best Selling Children’s Books of All Time newbooksusa.com/blog/best-selling-childrens-books To honor the Best Selling children’s Books for young adults and children, TIME compiled this survey in consultation with respected peers such as U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt, children’s book historian Leonard Marcus, the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, the Young Readers Center at the Library of Congress, the Every Child a Reader literacy foundation and 10 independent booksellers. By the grace of Almighty Allah, we’re living in a golden age of influential books for young adults, when books apparently written for teens are equally adored by readers of every generation. In the likes of Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen, they’ve produced characters and conceits that have become the currency of our pop-culture discourse—and inspired some of our best writers to contribute to the group. ROWLING $14.71 This book falls #2 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Book Summary Succeeding a long time of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry. Though Harry’s first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it’s his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined. Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come. Best Selling Children’s Book #3 DR. SEUSS’S ABC Author: DR. SEUSS $7.99 3/11
  • 4. This book falls #3 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. From Aunt Annie’s Alligator to Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz, this sturdy board book version of ‘Dr. Seuss’s ABC’ is now available in a bigger trim size. With Dr. Seuss as your guide, learning the alphabet is as fun and as funny as the feather on a Fiffer-feffer-feff! Best Selling Children’s Book #4 OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! Author: DR. SEUSS $10.99 This book falls #4 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Book Summary From climbing to high heights and seeing great sights to being left in a Lurch on a prickle-ly perch, Dr. Seuss addresses life’s ups and downs with his trademark humorous verse and illustrations, while encouraging readers to find the success that lies within. In a nice review, Booklist notes, “Seuss’s message is simple but never sappy: life may be a ‘Great Balancing Act,’ but through it all ‘There’s fun to be done.’” A perennial favorite and a perfect gift for anyone starting a new phase in their life! Best Selling Children’s Book #5 HOP ON POP Author: DR. SEUSS $3.24 This book falls #5 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Book Summary Full of short, simple words and silly rhymes, this book is perfect for reading alone or reading aloud with Dad! The rollicking rhythm will keep kids entertained on every page, and it’s an especially good way to show Pop some love on Father’s Day! Best Selling Children’s Book #6 4/11
  • 5. The Littlest Angel Author: Charles Tazewell $14.98 This book falls #6 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Book Summary Tiny brown spots on the covers like snow but do not block the view of color illustration. Very slight damage to ends of the spine and corners. Owner’s name on the nameplate inside. No scribbling or marks on clean brightly colored pages. 1962 reprint of 1946 Original. Grosset & Dunlap Publishers. Best Selling Children’s Book #7 THE GIVING TREE Author: Shel Silverstein $8.99 This book falls #7 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. The beautiful story all young children should grow up having this story read to them. No harm in revisiting this story as an adult too, to remind oneself not to take people and loved ones for granted. Best Selling Children’s Book #8 5/11
  • 6. ONE FISH, TWO FISH, RED FISH, BLUE FISH Author: Dr. Seuss $9.87 This book falls #8 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. I loved reading this book to my kids who, in turn, loved the book. It’s a great hit in my varied group from America and Central Asia. We’ve had great fun with rhyming and rhythm, storyline, and artwork. Watch Video At: https://youtu.be/oLpZE32QG5g Best Selling Children’s Book #9 WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS Author: SHEL SILVERSTEIN $10.25 6/11
  • 7. This book falls #9 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Shel Silverstein, the New York Times bestselling author of The Giving Tree, I have always loved this story. With the adult coloring craze still going on and storybook coloring books becoming a big deal I decided to pick up a copy of The Giving Tree that I would color to give to my kids and future grandkids. This edition is perfect for that purpose. Best Selling Children’s Book #10 HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN Author: J.K. ROWLING $15.43 This book falls #9 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Harry Potter’s third book in the Harry Potter series. It follows Harry and his friends through the excitement that is their third year at Hogwarts. At the start of the book, we find Harry doing his homework by flashlight under his bedsheets as any proof of his time at that wizarding school is forbidden by the Dursley’s. It’s Harry’s birthday and for the first time in his life, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. Best Selling Children’s Book #11 THE CAT IN THE HAT Author: Dr. SEUSS $8.99 This book falls #11 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. From the beloved Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat is the second-highest selling Dr. Seuss novel with 7,220,982 individual sales by 2001 and a successful film adaptation starring Mike Myers released in 2003. Best Selling Children’s Book #12 7/11
  • 8. SCUFFY THE TUGBOAT Author: GERTRUDE CRAMPTON $4.72 This book falls #12 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. One of the most beloved children’s stories ever—the classic Little Golden Book tale of Scuffy, an adventurous little tugboat. This was one of my favorite books growing up, and now I enjoy reading it to my kids. It’s the story of a toy tugboat who wants adventure and believes he “was meant for bigger things” but eventually realizes that home is exactly the right place for him. The illustrations are wonderful and show kids many different environments – all the way from a rural brook with cows in it to a bustling seaport at the edge of the ocean, and everything in between. Highly recommended if you enjoy sharing timeless stories and beautiful illustrations with your little ones. Best Selling Children’s Book #13 THE SAGGY BAGGY ELEPHANT Author: KATHRYN AND BYRON JACKSON $4.99 This book falls #13 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. I remember this book, even though it must be at least 58 years since I read it! I didn’t think it would still be in print, but here it is, and with good reason: the message is timeless – don’t be ashamed of who you are; don’t listen to what others say about you. So I bought it and loved it all over again. I want to pass it on to my grandchildren, but not yet. I am still enjoying the story and the pictures. But once I do, maybe in another 58 years my grandchildren can pass it on to theirs! Best Selling Children’s Book #14 8/11
  • 9. PAT THE BUNNY Author: DOROTHY KUNHARDT $11.03 This book falls #14 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. A book targeted at very young children, Pat the Bunny is the highest-selling touch and feels the book of all time reaching individual sales of 7,562,710 units by 2001. Best Selling Children’s Book #15 HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE Author: J.K. ROWLING $27.83 This book falls #15 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. The reader will never find a boring or uninteresting moment in The Goblet of Fire and I never get sick of reading it again and again as it’s so easy to lose myself in Harry Potter with the astounding events and distinctive characters. Anyone who hasn’t read up to The Goblet of Fire should definitely rethink that decision as this is the book where it all changes and it’s then impossible to not continue reading the rest of the books. Best Selling Children’s Book #16 9/11
  • 10. GREEN EGGS AND HAM Author: DR. SEUSS $8.69 This book falls #16 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Little aged readers love this book for its simple words fun story, and silly didactic rhythm of the poem, which helps young readers to learn and remember. Additionally, it enforces the lesson to try something, even if it looks weird, you may like them! You cannot say you don’t like something until you have tried it! Best Selling Children’s Book #17 TOOTLE Author: GERTRUDE CRAMPTON $29.95 This book falls #17 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. Yet another Little Golden Book, Tootle is a classic story about a train’s exciting adventures that children seem to endlessly enjoy with sales, by 2001, reaching 8,560,277 units. Best Selling Children’s Book #18 THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT BY BEATRIX POTTER $11.99 This book falls #18 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. In my opinion, this is one of the finest children’s stories ever written. My mother read it to me, and her mother read it to her. Her mother read it to the children of her graduate school professor when she baby-sat them in the teens of the twentieth century. It is a story every child should read. This is the edition with Beatrix Potter’s own illustrations. Do not buy any other, since they are part of the story, and it is impossible to outdo them. Best Selling Children’s Book #19 10/11
  • 11. THE POKY LITTLE PUPPY Author: JANETTE SEBRING LOWREY $17.80 This book falls #19 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. THE POKY LITTLE PUPPY was one of my favorite stories growing up, and I’m not sure if I still have the old copy tucked away at my folks’ house or not, so I had to order a new copy. It is not easy to build a book that is as focused as this one. The art, the amount of text on each page, the plot development, the beat and rhythm of the language, and the color scheme of the art. This book is a specimen of an era when a lot of effort went into kid’s entertainment, not to make it overdone, but to make it just right. Much like the porridge ultimately enjoyed by Goldilocks, “Poky Little Puppy” is a classic because it is just right. Best Selling Children’s Book #20 HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS Author: J.K. ROWLING $19.07 This book falls #20 in our recommended book list of Best Selling Children’s Books. The Chamber of Secrets is a great read compared to 90% of other books in general, and 99% of other children’s fantasy novels. The art in this book is simply amazing. They add to the story subtly, rather than take the story over as the movies did. To me, this is vital, as part of the joy of the Harry Potter world is the evocation of your imagination. I am happy to give my kids a little push with art, as they clearly still create their own images of quidditch, Hagrid, and the often explosive and unexpected effects of Ron’s broken wand. 11/11
