DEATH Indians were hostile and killed many through armed conflict Many died of starvation, eating rats and horses The river water was contaminated by their own sewage causing diseases such as typhoid fever and dysentery The sudden onset of diseases were also caused by arsenic poisoning thought to be brought by Catholic – Protestant fight
