in Asian markets and sought out the opportunity. The movie The Lion King came out in 1996 and

Asian market and still upholds the reputation today. In the 1990's over 2,000 theme parks opened in
China. Many of these theme parks resulted in failure due to the high competition, poor projections
and high costs. Taking about 10 years, Disney opened in Hong Kong in September 2005. Ticket
sales were exceeding expectation actually becoming a problem during Chinese holidays, causing
Disney to turn away customers. The location was drawing customers from China, Taiwan, and
Southeast Asia. Disney's solution to the capacity and cultural variety was to expand their theme
park, but the government held limitations and did not support the expansion. In response to this,
Disney planned another theme park just 3 hours north of Hong Kong in Shanghai. Disney believed

Media, being the most powerful tool of communication there is, influence societies in many ways.
In fact the hypodermic needle theory states that passive audiences are directly influenced by media.
On the other hand, from a Marxist perspective, one can argue the opposite that it is the audiences
who influence the information which is produced via the media. In this essay this group assessed
and contrasted the media of three countries namely Singapore, Jamaica and Bolivia in relation to
their respective economy, society, values and political system. These three countries differ gravely in
terms of their cultures, norms economic activities, religions and even social ills etc and yet despite
these differences, they all share one thing in common– media coverage. In addition, each country
has rules and regulations geared towards the protection of journalists although sometimes such are

George Carlin, a Grammy–winning American stand–up comedian, actor, author, and philosopher,
once said, "'Meow' means 'woof' in cat." This means, any language, has a purpose and an impact on
the people or things around us. With the rise of many new and different languages like Esperanto
and Singlish, many people have mixed opinions about these languages. In the portfolio, I will be
tacking the whole issue on Singlish, whether it should be allowed or not, since it is related to our
society and because of the rising use of Singlish in this generation.

Educating the public
When using Singlish in school, I recommend that students and teachers exercise control while using
Singlish. They need to know when is the right time and the right place to use Singlish. Also, they
cannot speak Singlish all the time. They need to know the difference between acceptable/ standard
English and Singlish. Just like how they know the difference between Chinese and English. When
greeting someone, for instance, one must use Standard English or it will seen rude and such habits
are negative in the working world when they grow up.
When we live in a multicultural nation, a colloquial language like Singlish is unavoidable. We can
only teach what should be used. I recommend that talks and activities should be carried out drawing
the line between Singlish and Standard English. I do recognize that these programmes would not
ban Singlish, but banning Singlish is not wanted but in fact only needed to be known. Once again,
we only need everyone to know the time to use Singlish.

Singapore is a city–state, similar to the Vatican City in size and title, that is situated in Southeastern
Asia. Singapore and Malaysia are a mixing pot of many different cultures that have immigrated
other Asian cultures and found a new home in the sovereign country. It is fact a country as of 1819
and like many other countries has its own flag, national anthem, government laws, and cultural
norms. It is best to break down the country and look at the many religions and cultures that create
Singapore and look at it all as a colorful and diverse jigsaw puzzle. This is just to get a better
understanding of the culture and its people.
