My Favorite Movie Analysis
Movies always have life lessons scattered throughout them. The Sandlot has many of them, and that
is why it is my favorite movie. Some of the life lessons are: invite the new kid to play, don't
overthink things and keep trying, believe you are worthy, go above and beyond for your friends, and
confront your fears. Throughout the movie, the boys developed an unbreakable bond, went on
adventures, and loved roasting each other; it was hilarious. I love how the movie is set up to teach
others lessons and to entertain them as well.
The Sandlot started off with Scotty, Smalls, moving to a new neighborhood. Scotty saw a group of
boys walking with baseball equipment. He follows the boys to the Sandlot. Scotty wanted to play
baseball but didn't know how. The boys invite him to play and Benny taught him how to catch. The
first couple of life lessons the movie teaches the viewers is to invite the new kid to play and believe
you are worthy. You should always be open to hang out with new people and make new friends.
With Scotty not knowing how to play baseball and being the new kid in the neighborhood, he had to
believe in himself. He had to keep trying his best to not overthink things, so he could get a spot on
their team and do good. Slowly but surely, the boys became close friends and a great team that
worked together.
Together they went on funny and touching adventures. From playing baseball every day at the
sandlot to spending some nights in the tree house, going to the carnival, and running into the other
baseball team, the boys developed an unbreakable bond. The boys ran into a problem at the sandlot
one day though. They hit their last ball over the fence and they couldn't get it because of the Beast,
an English Mastiff. Struggling to find the change to buy a new ball, Smalls told the boys that he had
a ball they could use; they got all excited and told him to go get it. He ran home, went into his
stepdad's collector's room, and grabbed a ball off of his collector's shelf. That ball was not just a
baseball though, it was a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, an American professional baseball player
whose career in the Major League Baseball spanned 22 seasons. The boys insist that Smalls should
be the one who got

Transcendence in Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping Essay
Transcendence in Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping
William H. Burke suggests that transience in Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping is a type of
pilgrimage, and that "the rigors and self–denials of the transient life are necessary spiritual
conditioning for the valued crossing from the experience of a world of loss and fragmentation to the
perception of a world that is whole and complete" (717). The world of reality in Housekeeping is
one "fragmented, isolated, and arbitrary as glimpses one has at night through lighted windows"
(Robinson 50). Many of the characters that precede Ruth in the narrative rebel against something in
this world that is not right. Edmund Foster, her grandfather, escapes by train to the Midwest and his

Nor will they, like Edmund and Helen, submit to a premature death in the water; instead they pursue
a spiritual transience that will lead them to an earthly state of transcendent grace.
The thoughts and emotions that occur in connection with water are triggered by the lake, and they
help Ruth choose transience over any other form of existence. When water floods Fingerbone, the
boundaries are overrun, exposing the impermanence of the physical world, and the world's own
natural push towards transience. Water shifts the margins, warning us that the visible world only
shows us part of the whole––or perhaps even a mere reflection of a false reality. After the fantastic
train wreck in which Ruth's grandfather perished, the lake sealed itself over in ice, changing
boundaries again, while it concealed, like a secret, the last traces of the victims with the illusion of
its calm surface. The lake, a source of beauty and darkness, life and death, is "the accumulated past,
which vanishes but does not vanish, which perishes and remains" (172). Water carries the symbolic
possibility for rebirth– the flood causes the graves in the town cemetery to sink, "so that they looked
a little like...empty bellies," suggesting that the dead were born into the receding waters (62). As
water and death are so pre–eminent in Sylvie's consciousness, in dream, she teaches Ruth to dance
underwater, to live a life of transience to be

Essay about Babe Ruth
George Herman Ruth Jr. is by far one of Americas greatest sports heroes. He is known primarily for
his great baseball exploits and secondary as a man who stayed out late before every game and
partied until there was no one left to party with. There is more behind the story of Babe Ruth than
just baseball and parties. As a boy Ruth was your average youth who got himself into a little to
much trouble and paid the price. As an adult he was a husband and a father who cared more about
his family than he liked to show. George Ruth was a baseball hero and an alcoholic, but nobody's
perfect. I plan on exploring Babe Ruth's life and noting the good and bad points of Americas

Fortunately he found someone he could trust and respect. Someone that boosted his morale and
made him feel good about himself. The person responsible for this act of kindness was Brother
Mathias. He acted like a father to him. He taught George to read and write and the difference
between right and wrong. Brother Mathias was a giant 6'6'' and well built to about 250 pounds,
which meant he could accomplish any objective without raising his voice or using physical force.
The first time George swung a baseball bat was at the school. He knew then he was to be a hitter. He
said to a friend, "It was one of those things you could just feel."(59) Brother Mathias taught him to
be a better ball player. He schooled Ruth in the fundamentals of the game. George finally had
something to be happy about. He had Brother Mathias his new father–figure and he had baseball.
Babe Ruth became a great baseball player while at St. Marys. Even when he was young he was
playing in the higher age divisions. By the time he was nine he was playing on the 12 year old team.
When he was 12 he was competing with the 16 year olds. And at the age of 16, he was playing on
the varsity team. Because of Ruths amazing talents he was given a chance to play at a higher level.
In February of 1914, shortly after Ruths 19th birthday, Jack Dunn, the manager of the Baltimore
Orioles, and St. Mary's Xavernian Brothers agreed on a contract between George Ruth and the

When baseball was first originated it was known to be an American sport, when actually it
originated from two English sports. The first game was rounders, a game played between two teams,
in this game there is a striker and a fielder team. Another game is cricket just like baseball each team

in 1860 olympic club of Philadelphia wanted to stop playing British sports and play baseball instead.
Harry Wright former cricket player wanted to form his own team so he gathered up nine other
players and formed what was called the Cincinnati Red Stockings. But the average player did not
earn more than 1,000 dollars a season". (Johnston pg.4) The movie the Sandlot takes place in the
summer of 1962. This was an important year for race relationships. In 1962, "President Kennedy
sent troops to the University of Mississippi to force them to admit black student James Meredith
against severe opposition" (Schlesinger, pg.562). At this same time, "by executive order, President

thousands of households. Barbie generated huge sales, dominating the place in the market. Within
one year of her founding, Mattel had sold 300, 000 dolls and with the sales now reaching up to 3

Babe's amazing pitching allowed the Red Sox to win the World Series again, four games to one.
Ruth extended his World Series consecutive scoreless inning streak to 29⅔ innings, a recorded that
would last until almost fifty years later. Inly July 1918, Ruth walked off the field due to a dispute
with the manager, a mistake that would soon lead him to be traded to the Yankees. However Ruth
wouldn't go out without a fight. Ruth placed a "curse" on the Red Sox for trading him to the
Yankees. The Red Sox didn't win another World Series until 2004 (86 years later).
On December 26, 1919, Babe Ruth was traded to the Yankees. Several reasons such as Babe's
negative attitude and his demand for a double in his salary led his trade to the New York Yankees for
almost $2mil (in now a days dollars). Babe would stay with the Yankees from 1919–1935. During
his career with the Yankees, Babe Ruth emerged from a pitcher, to an all–star hitter. In 1920, Babe
hit 54 home runs and his .847 slugging average would remain a Major League Baseball record for
over 80 years. The best year of Ruth's career was 1921, hitting 59 home runs, batting .378 and
slugging .846. Ruth also hit a record high of 139 home runs on July 18, 1921. Ruth's name soon
became synonymous with the term home–run. Babe's powerful home runs went as far as 575 feet
from the home plate. Unfortunately, due to an injury, Babe was not able to play in a majority of the
World Series against the New York Giants. This led to the

Barbie Doll 's Influence On Society

Ruth and Elliot Handler are the founders of Mattel creation and in 1959 the world was given the
"Barbie" doll. (Inc, n.d.) The Barbie doll was introduced to a small toy fair costing $3. The Barbie
doll was the first doll to be sold that doesn't look, "like a baby" but more like a woman. The Barbie

Analysis Of A Raisin In The Sun
A Raisin in the sun
This play takes place in the 1950s, in the Southside of Chicago. With a family of five hard–working
African Americans. Even Though the exact years isn't specified in the play. Since the play takes
place in the 1950s during a very significant time dealing with race issues that were going on at that
time. In the 1950s it was the turning point for America for civil injustice, the beginning of the
decade brought in the civil rights movement. At that time most of the south was segregated by
racists Jim Crow laws. Also, many African Americans faced unofficial racists barriers up north. So
when reading the play I wasn't surprised that the members of the family lived in a tiny roach–
infested apartment, even though they had to use the neighbor's bathroom across the hall, there's was
still hope for change. Most of the family looked forward to a very large check coming in the mail
from the late father insurance policy. But until then they were stuck in the same living situation. In
this play, it's a great example of a man in conflict with another man, since the complication is a
disagreement with the whole family on how the money should be spent. Lena Younger who's the
mother of Walter and Beneatha. The matriarch of the family, an extremely religious woman. She
wants to use her husband's insurance money as a down–payment to move into a house with a
backyard. So she can achieve a feeling of gratification through seeing her family move up in the

ken was 12 inches tall, had "molded" plastic hair (blond and brunette) and came dressed in red

Barbie doll, it helps them improve their creativity with clothes, colors combinations skills because
there are so many outfits, shoes, accessories, and play sets that they can mix and match. This can
improve their skills as well as they can share their ideas behind their decisions for dressing up their

Living on a Hyphen: Examining the Fluidity of Identity and Belonging Within a Bicultural Context
in Ruth Ozeki's A Tale For the Time Being
In A Tale For the Time Being, Ozeki Ruth uses the character of Nao to portray the struggles of
negotiating between two distinct cultures and what it means to live on a hyphen. The hyphen
represents disconnection and connection simultaneously. Liu defines hyphenated identity as
"involving the coexistence, rather than the merging of two cultures" (33). In other words, two
distinct entities belong together, but never successfully merge into one because the individual finds
it difficult to fully associate with either of the two cultures. In Ozeki's novel we witness how
bicultural experiences shape Nao's sense of identity and belonging as she grapples with the
complexities of moving from one country to another.
For first generation immigrants in North America, acceptance into the mainstream society requires
them to "learn or improve their English language skills and adapt to its cultural practices" (Liu 1).
Liu believes second generation immigrants are better equipped to accomplish this because they are
either "born in the host country or migrated at a young age" (1). When Nao's family moved to
Sunnyvale, Nao learned English quickly and internalized American values and norms. Nao was
young and had "no memory of Japan from when [she] was a baby" (43), which explains her rapid
adjustment to America. Unlike her parents, Nao never had a

Book Of Ruth Essay
Introduction
The book of Ruth gathers much attention from its readers because of its briefness and simplicity.
The book of Ruth is set in ancient Israel in the later portion of the Judges era, as it serves as a bridge
between the Judges rule and the monarchy is 1 & 2 Samuel. This order comes from the Septuagint,
and is very close chronologically. The book has a relative calmness to it that sharply contrasts the
environment it is set in. To the inexperienced reader, the book may seem like just a short story, with
little historical background. However, to the experienced and diligent biblical reader, it much more
than that, as it contains many themes that are viewed through the all important eyes of a woman.
Background Information
In ancient Israelite culture, a woman's entire life, from her societal standing to her source of income,
rested entirely upon her husband's shoulders. In the beginning of the book of Ruth, even though
there is a great famine in the land, Naomi is still taken care of because she has the security of her
husband and sons. However, when her husband and sons pass away, she is left with absolutely
nothing because as a woman, she is viewed as essentially a second–class citizen at best. After the
death the death of her husband and sons, Naomi turned to the only family she had left, her two
widowed daughter–in–laws. She tried to convince both of them to follow her to Bethlehem. One of
them refused, but Ruth decided to follow Naomi.

becomes apparent that without participating in motherhood, these creative acts would not exist. Our
culture insists that entering motherhood is a death sentence to the artist, binding you to a life of

ability to support themselves as artists due to being motivated to create something inspired by their

by society, such as what they should look like, how they should act and dress, as well as what their
future goals could be. The following essay follows Barbie's history from 1959 to 1963, covering her
development, her appeal to children, and her existence as a cultural artifact of the time period.

In addition to a different body, Bud Westmore, the "make–up czar" at Universal Pictures, gave Lilli
a makeover (Lord 32). He discarded her "bee–stung lips, heavy eyelashes, and widow's peek
eyebrows" (Lord 32). Following these improvements, Ryan modified the doll's joints.
Finally in 1958, Barbie Millicent Roberts was born 11 1/2 inches tall and weighing 11 ounces. She
debuted as a teenage model in a black and white striped swimsuit that came with sunglasses, high–
heeled shoes, and gold–colored hoop earrings (see Figure 1). Her body was shapely with movable
head, arms, and legs. Barbie was the first doll in America with an adult body.
America's Reaction
Ruth Handler realized that pretending about the future was a part of the growing up process. While
she watched her daughter, Barbara (who Barbie is named after), playing with paper dolls, Handler
formulated the idea of creating an adult doll. This was not necessarily a new idea because there were
adult fashion dolls, such as Cissy and Miss Revlon, which were on the market. The phenomenon
behind Barbie was that she was an affordable toy that had those same grown up accessories as the
other adult dolls.
As soon as Barbie was introduced to the public, her mature body horrified many adult females.
Mothers said they would not allow their child to play with Barbie because they were wary of her sex
appeal. Mattel conducted a study with mothers and daughters before they introduced Barbie.

Barbie History
The History of Barbie The Barbie doll: a household name that many little girls admire, many adults
dislike, and many people enjoy using as a topic for debate. Although the doll made its world debut
in 1959, its popularity has not slowed down since. This may be because of Barbie's luxurious
wardrobe, or her perfect anatomically improbable figure that so many girls of all ages wish they had.
With Barbie's popularity comes the price of people bashing her for any flaws they can find. Since
the creation of Barbie, there have been many controversies over her forever–changing looks and
what they represent.
Although Barbie was introduced to the world in 1959, many important events occurred that lead up
to her creation. Ruth Mosko, born on November ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people accuse Barbie of involuntarily influencing young girls and making them more self
conscious about how they look, setting the foundation for possibly developing an eating disorder in
the future. One argument is centered around the "Slumber Party Barbie", which came with a scale
that was always set to 110 pounds and a book which said the only way to lose weight was to do this
one thing: "Don't Eat!." The impact of the Barbie doll on eating habits was shown in a study where
girls from ages 5 to 8 were shown pictures of either a Barbie or a more lifelike doll, and the girls
who saw the Barbie doll had a stronger urge to eat less (Berk). Another compelling argument
surrounds the fact whether Barbie is a feminist or not. Some people argue that Barbie is too thin and
too perfectly made up all the time, while others say that Barbie is more adult like and less harmful
than other dolls which are "fishnet–clad hussies with none of her dignity and professionalism"
(Alter). Both debates have people continuously changing sides, not sure of how they truly feel about

From the 1950s up to now, Barbie has evolved. From initially just Caucasian dolls, Mattel has
expanded Barbie races. African American, Hispanic, Indian, Asian, Hispanic, African, Native
American, and Pacific Islander versions of Barbie can easily be found on today's shelves. Not only
has Barbie's changed physically, but her, musculature transformed. Barbies come in petite, tall and
curvy. Introducing the different sized Barbies allowed for doll–players (especially young girls) to
identify with a doll that modeled themselves. This change could get more body types involved in
advertisements surrounding Barbie. In addition, in the 1960's Barbie's domesticity shifted and she
began to explore different career options such as, "Fashion Editor, Student teacher, Junior designer,
modern artist, and Miss astronaut" (Springer 240). Looking back, giving women more opportunities
men usually occupied was a huge move in the 1950s. Women were expected to raise their children
and keep their husbands satisfied. Now, Barbie can be a president, a business executive, US Army

Controversy Of Barbie
Despite the controversy faced through the years Barbie is an ever relevant and popular toy for young
children in America. The controversial topic of the matter being mostly dedicated to the appeal of
whether Barbie sends a good message to kids, or not. What most people tend to overlook about
Barbie is the reason and inspiration of her creation, the feminine cultivation she displays, and the
diversity and positivity of her life and personality. When Barbie is brought up the first thing people
will think of is her figure. With a tiny waist, slim legs, and particularly small hands and feet, this is
the main tool that people on the countercheck of Barbie's popularity use to attack the doll's positive
features, encouraging the idea that Barbie's unrealistic shape causes body image issues and

Barbie has had a role in over 130 different jobs. Some of these roles have included things like being
an astronaut. The first female astronaut was launched into space in 1963 and only two years

Barbie was added where she herself was the president of the United States. Never in history has a

open to new opportunities. Barbie's own slogan is "Be who you wanna be". This is important
because it encourages young children to become who they want to be and do what they desire to do,
even if it means breaking away from society's standards. In Ruth's own words, "My whole

Essay about Babe Ruth
On February 6, 1895, Kate Schamberger Ruth gave birth to her first child. George Herman Ruth, Jr.
was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the first of eight children born to Kate and George
Herman Ruth. Ruth's father worked as a bartender and ultimately opened his own tavern. Many
believe that George was an orphan all his life, but for the first seven years of his life he was with his
parents, but he survived without guidance on the dirty, crowded streets of the Baltimore riverfront.
On June 13, 1902, George Herman Ruth took his seven year–old to St. Mary's Industrial School for
Boys. Not only did he place young George in the school, but he also signed over custody of the boy
to the Xaverian Brothers, a Catholic Order of Jesuit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When George Ruth, Jr., appeared with Dunn at the ballpark the other players started cracking jokes,
and one of the players quipped, "Well, here's Jack's newest Babe." The rest of the
players also started referring to young George as "Babe" and the name stuck. Thus
began the storied career of Babe Ruth.
In the mornings, Ruth would go into Landers' Coffee Shop in Boston, and it is here that he met
Helen Woodford, a seventeen–year–old waitress. They married on October 17, 1914 in Ellicott City,
Maryland.
In December of 1919 Babe was sold to the New York Yankees. Prior to Ruth's arrival in New York,
the team had never won a pennant. With "The Babe" as part of their team they became a
dominant force in major league baseball, winning seven pennants and four World Championships
from 1920 to 1933. In 1921, the couple adopted a baby girl, Dorothy.
On January 11, 1929, at the age of 31, Helen died of suffocation in a fire. Dorothy, who was eight at
the time, was away at boarding school.
Babe met and became seriously interested in a young widow, Claire Hodgson. Claire had come to
New York from Georgia with her young daughter Julia in 1920 and worked as a model and actress.
On April 17, 1929, the two were married in New York. In October 1930, Babe adopted Claire's

Grapes Of Wrath: Character Analysis And Summary
In this section of the novel, Kathy observes that the veteran couples in the cottages mimic behaviour
that they have seen on television programmes. Kathy then notices a change in the behaviour of Ruth,
she too begins to display behavioural traits picked up from TV and the veterans. These traits confuse
Tommy at first, when Ruth hits his arm he "[turns] abruptly to Ruth and [goes] 'what?'" to which
Ruth glares furiously, showing how they differ in personality (Ruth tries desperately to fit in,
Tommy does not). Kathy, who is particularly irritable on that day as Ruth has blurted out the entire
plot of the book Kathy was trying to read, confronts Ruth about how she hits Tommy's arm when
they say goodbye. Ruth claims not to know what Kathy is talking ... Show more content on

The idea of moving on is presented in this section by Ruth who suggests how the students of
Hailsham are gradually growing up and moving on from their Hailsham days, except from Kathy.
This brings us on to another theme which is the idea of friendship and relationships; Kathy and Ruth
begin to fight when Kathy mentions odd mannerisms in Ruth and Tommy's relationship, such as the
way she slaps his elbow when saying goodbye. Whilst arguing, we see that Ruth and Kathy's
friendship has become more distant that previously at Hailsham, as Ruth and Kathy do not get on as
well as they used to and have more disagreements. One explanation for this could be the fact that
Ruth seems to alter her personality and behaviour in order to fit in and attempt to be popular, this is
shown by the fact that she mimics the veterans at the cottages. Ruth's mimicking may also be
explained by the clones' lack of proper adult role models when growing up; the clones form
behavioural habits and learn how to act from copying characters in television programmes and
students older than them. This suggests to us the theme of family, or rather lack of it in the clones'
case, and how we learn from our parents and relatives around

Rosemary's Baby Analysis
The Horror of Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Horror films share similar characteristics. Horror is meant to enact fear into its audience. Most
horror films scare their audiences by using vampires, zombies, ghosts, blood, or gore. However, the
film, Rosemary's Baby (1968), scares its audiences, not by blood and gore. Rosemary's Baby is one
of the scariest films made, but does not conform to the normal horror genre. Roman Polanski's film
tells a story of a young mother who manipulated to give birth to Satan's baby. Guy Woodhouse
(John Cassavetes), an actor, is enticed by wealth. He is promised by the old couple next door (Ruth
Gordon and Sidney Blackmer), who are part of a Satanic cult, riches in exchange for his wife's,
Rosemary (Mia Farrow), womb. Rosemary's Baby is a horror film due to the cultural response of the
audience based on real–life events of the 1960's.

The child is Satan's baby, and she is its mother. Rosemary is in complete shock, but slowly becomes
accepting of the situation. By the end of the film, the viewer is left with the idea that Rosemary has
fully accepted that baby as her own, and will care for it. This portrays America as a whole. In the
1960's, cynicism has caused American society to accept or ignore the true nature of its leaders.
Rosemary finds out the true evil of her baby, just like America's citizens, but she accepts full
responsibility for the child in the end. America has lived with the sad and solemn face that it is being
lied too everyday by its government officials.
Rosemary's Baby encompasses the true meaning of horror. The film touches the audience's mind by
installing ideas and events that are happening in the time period of the film. Polanski uses realism
and symbolism to link the film with current problems faced by the audiences. Rosemary's Baby is a
true horror film by playing on the audience's

From The Bluest Eye By Toni Morrison
In Toni Morrison's "From the Bluest Eye," she writes about a girl who is in conflict with the societal
norms of the time period. The girl was given dolls to play with, but she does not understand why she
has to play with them and what makes the dolls beautiful. It is made clear that the girl never wanted
dolls and nobody ever asked her what she wanted as a toy, yet the society she lives in tells her that
girls play with dolls and nothing else. This story raises several interesting ideas, such as why were
dolls made and why does society want girls to play with dolls? A larger question that the story raises
is whether or not there is negative or positive effects on girls who play with dolls. Dolls have been
around for a long time, but no one knows how dolls were created or their main purpose. Some
research found that Barbie were created for various reasons. In addition, dolls also started many
controversies among parents and scientists. There have been various studies conducted concerning
the role of dolls on various aspects of a girl's life. Some of the studies conducted focused on girls
playing with various types of dolls and how the dolls affected their self–esteem and body image.
Other studies conducted focused on young girls playing with dolls and how the dolls affected girls
as they got older. Another study conducted focused on various types of dolls and how the dolls and

The Positive And Negative Effects Of Barbie Dolls
The Positive and Negative Effects of Barbie Dolls in Society All around our world we are constantly
being told what we should act and be like for females and males. Barbie was born on March 9, 159
in the American International Toy Fair in New York. The Barbie doll has been influencing young
girls ever since she was born. The Barbie doll have a huge influence on the way that girls perceive
their role in society and also on the way they develop. Barbie dolls in some way reflect and
influence our society values. Especially in our society today many views on the way Barbie dolls
influence our society are often negative and their ability to positively influence young females is
often denied. The Barbie Doll has been a cultural icon ever since it was first revealed. All over the
world anyone can recognize what Barbie look like and what she symbolizes. The original design of
the Barbie came up when the creator, Ruth Handler, noticed a pattern of her daughter being attracted
to a mature looking dolls instead of the baby doll. She then came up with "the notion of creating a
three–dimensional version of a shapely, fashionable young–woman doll"(Maynard). Mattel's
influence around the world can be seen by the sales section on their Annual Report. In 2015 Barbie
made Mattel a gross profit of 905.9 million dollars (Annual Report). Mattel is the number one

There are nine specific ways to foster empowerment. Ken Hoffman didn't follow these rules and

Ken Hoffman violated was articulating a clear vision and goals.
When Ruth Cummings was made the branch manager, she was told to make the store one of the best

Barbie Since the beginning of time, toys have often been an indicator of the way a society behaves,
and how they interact with their children. For example, in ancient Greece, artifacts recovered there
testify that children were simply not given toys to play with as in the modern world. The cruel ritual
of leaving a sick child on a hillside for dead, seems to indicate a lack of attention to the young (Lord
16). The same is true of today's society. As you can see with the number of toy stores in our society,
we find toys of great value to our lives and enjoy giving them to children as gifts. Ask just about any
young girl what she wants for Christmas and you'll undoubtedly get the same answer: "A Barbie."
But what exactly has caused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the Barbie doll was so popular that three years after her release in 1959 Mattel was still
filling orders from her first year (Long 17).
It wasn't until the late 1960's that critics began "comparing Barbie to a Playboy Bunny and calling
her a corrupter of youth" ("Bad Girl" 3). One woman commented, "She's an absurd representation of
what a woman should be" ("Bad Girl" 3)––and that's exactly what many others thought she was, too.
With such impossible real–life measurements of 5'9" tall, 36"–18"–33" bust, waist, and hip
(Benstock and Ferriss 35), it's easy to see why mothers across the country banned the doll from their
homes and refused to let their impressionable young daughters be influenced by a piece of painted
plastic (Bestock and Ferriss 35). Since dolls have often been responsible for teaching children what
society deems important or beautiful, many concerned parents wondered why Mattel did not design
a doll that taught more valuable lessons than dressing pretty and being dangerously skinny (Edut
19)? Who said a runway model was best suited for teaching a child what is beautiful anyway?
"According to a Mattel spokesperson, a Kate Moss figure is better suited for today's fashions" (Edut
19), and that is one reason why Barbie must be so disproportional. Actually, another reason for
Barbie's anorexic figure can be traced back long before Kate Moss and the fashion runway. Barbie

A Reflection Of The Human Species On Earth
Miriam Cortes FYS 111.08 29 October 2017 Professor Howie I have reached earth in Evansville

not even to the restroom. Their interactions amongst each other are very minimal because they are
very segregated. The groups are separated by interests like things called "majors" or "classes". They
seem to travel in groups and are not aware of what is going on around them because they don't seem
to care about the individuals that are trying to concentrate intensely on the bonded scriptures in
English. They keep their scriptures in a "backpack" which is sewn fabric secured with two–sided
teeth that can open and close. Also, all their "backpacks" are different and seem to reflect their
individual personalities and interests. The louder humans have louder color backpacks and the
quieter humans have a more muted colored "backpack". Most seem to care for something called

The first Barbie was created in March 1959 by the American business women Ruth Handler and was
manufactured by the toy company Mattel Inc. The creator of the famous Barbie dolls, Ruth Handler,
got her inspiration for the dolls from a German doll called Bild Lilli. She named the new doll she

Barbie has since changed her body size to match what was desirable or to help different shaped girls
to accept themselves, clothing, hair and makeup styles depending on what was popular at the time of
her release and various additional features have been added and removed along the way.
Since her debut, Barbie's fashion styles, including clothing, hairstyles and makeup have had

Defining the Sugar Baby Firstly, what is a sugar baby. Jenna Homan, defines the sugar baby
relationship where a Sugar Daddy enriches a Sugar Babies life by helping to fund her goals. In turn,
the sugar baby offers friendship, and in some cases sex, back towards the sugar daddy. In a sugaring
relationship, the sugar daddy defines the relationship, but both parties have a specific expectations
of the relationship. Some sugar babies have sex in order to receive and allowance. This is the
standard definition of prostitution. However, for other sugar babies, sex isn't on the table until they

The sugar baby/daddy relationship can be summed up to as human nature. Men are commonly
attracted to beautiful things, while women are typically attracted to a strong man. Men have also
historically paid for a women in order when engaging in a relationship by paying for dinner or and
transportation. The sugar daddy/sugar baby relationship shows the three things most desired in
today's society, "youth, wealth, and beauty." Ruth Padawer, writer for the New York Times
Magazine, writes, "Heterosexual relationships, including marriage, have long involved economic
transactions, but Bailey points out that when men provided financial security, they traditionally did
so in exchange for a woman's sexual virtue (and potential to bear and rear children,) not for sexual
thrills. For that, they often turned to prostitutes and mistress, involving a frank money–for–sex
exchange." The sugar baby relationship is a directly linked to the new generation's values on sex and
relationships. Traditionally, a prostitute would be engaging a direct sex for money exchange, but
now men want someone where they can also have a friendship/companionship with. Also, what's
most startling is the number of sugar babies on college campus. It goes to show how unreasonable
the cost of college has become, where sugar daddies are now taking on the role to send their sugar
babies through college. In 2013, on SeekingArrangement 44 percent of its 2.3 million "babies" are
in college. I plan on talking also about the sexualization of sugar babies here, because some of the
most successful sugar babies I seen have had some kind of breast enhancement surgery. But, then

Payton's Babe Ruth
Is it a bird... is it a plane... it's a baseball! The game of baseball was invented by a person by the
name of Abner Doubleday in 1839. Since then, baseball has become competitive, exciting and full
of memorable moments. Baseball is one of America's most popular sports. It takes skilled players to
make the game entertaining and fun. Some skilled players include: Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb,
Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial. But none of these players are as good as Babe Ruth.
George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in a small house in Baltimore, Maryland.
George grew up a bum, living on the streets of the Baltimore waterfront. George was a disrespectful
kid that always ran away from school. He also smoked and played pranks on people. One day, a man
named Brother Matthias saw George's energy and wanted to harness that energy for baseball.
Matthias could hit a baseball over the fence, using just one arm. This inspired George to play
baseball. One day in a baseball game, George was up to bat facing an inexperienced pitcher. George
started laughing and making fun of him. Matthias stopped George and told him, "If you think that
you can do better, let's see you go out there and pitch." The next inning, George went up to the
mound and pitched. He had no clue how to pitch but he threw harder than anyone in the league. A
minor league team's coach saw him play, and asked the young 19 year old to sign a contract with his
team! This would be the start of something great!

Jack Worthing And Memory In The Importance Of Being Earnest
To begin with, memory in The Importance of Being Earnest is used as pieces of a puzzle to find the
true heritage of Jack Worthing. Interestingly, John likes to go bunburying as Ernest Worthing in the
city of London. He falls in love with a woman named Gwendolen Fairfax and proposes to her. Jack
is delighted to discover that Gwendolen returns his affections. However, he finds out that
Gwendolen is fixated on the name Earnest in which the name "inspires absolute confidence." She
makes it clear that she would not consider marrying a man who name was not Ernest. Jack therefore
has to get christened, but must get approved from Lady Bracknell. Jack almost passes the test, but
must bring up his heritage. Ultimately, Jack's only memory of his heritage is that he was found in a
handbag in a cloakroom at Victoria Station. In order to marry Gwendolen, he must discover his true
past. The connection between his past is finally unveiled when Lady Bracknell spots Miss Prism and
demands to know where the baby she was responsible was after Miss Prism disappeared twenty–
eight years ago. Miss Prism's memory recounts that she lost the baby after absent–mindedly placing
it in a handbag in which she had meant to place the manuscript for a novel she had written. She had
left the handbag in the cloakroom of a railway station. Piecing the memories together, it turns out
that John's name is actually Ernest and is the son of Lady Bracknell's sister. It turns out John was
ironically telling the truth that his name is Ernest. Also, Cecily keeps a diary in order to enter the
secret wonders of her life. She states that if she didn't write them down, she'd forget them. Cecily
points out that memory is usually inaccurate and therefore has a diary to accurately remember what
has occurred. All in all, memory in this play is used to discover Jack's heritage through the
memories of multiple characters and used as points in history
Moving on, The Glass Menagerie is a memory play narrated by the character Tom Wingfield who
recounts one of his biggest regrets. The play focuses on the climatic decision between his
commitment to his family versus his personal desires. Tom remembers that he longed to be free, but
has stayed in the family because he

How Has Barbie Changed America
Why have America's perceptions of Barbie changed since 1959?
Introduction
//summary of the entire paper
Barbie is a well–known doll from Mattel that has achieved worldwide fame in its lifetime of over 50
years(Barbiemedia.com, 2009). Its impact has been commented on by many professionals both
economically as well as its impact on society mentally. Many believe that Barbie has been the cause
for body image issues for young children and has affected people well into adulthood, some have
gone on to suggest that the whole company is the bane of society and should be shut down.
However, perceptions of Barbie didn't start that way and I want to explore what caused this large
shift in views. For such a seemingly insignificant toy to gain such strong ... Show more content on

mum who wanted a new toy for her daughters. Its rise to fame caused it to become one o Mattel's

When you first search what is Barbie on google a video on /Barbies youtube channel comes
up(youtube,2015). It involves a wide variety of different dolls walking towards the street and
beginning to dance together. It then proceeds to say "This is Barbie" as a title on a made–up
newspaper, with many different dolls of different appearances and presumably a number of
backgrounds. This is presumably what the company want Barbie to be viewed as now, a

Paul Tibbets Biography
On Febuary 23, 1915 Enola Gay and Paul Warfield Tibbets Sr. welcomed their baby boy, Paul
Tibbets. Little did they know that he would do great things.

to raise him. When Paul was 12, his family packed up and moved to Florida where his future would
be decided. When they first moved to Florida the barnstorming pilot who was promoting Baby Ruth

Personal Narrative: My Name Of Ruth
Ruth is most commonly known among my friends, teachers and colleagues. Ruth reminds me of an
older secretary with cat eye glasses and permanent frown lines. A person that I am slowly evolving
into. It's a name that I embrace with open arms because it is a simple name which my sister had
given me. My sister had named me after a book in a bible. If you want to look it up to know the
complete story i say go ahead because it is a short story and quite interesting. It is about a widow
who eventually became a servant to her husband's family. Eventually she found her match and lived
her life with her new husband. I find it amazing how people can branch nick names off of Ruth. The
most famous nicknames i have heard has been Ruthie, Baby Ruthie,

My Favorite Movie Analysis

  • 1. My Favorite Movie Analysis Movies always have life lessons scattered throughout them. The Sandlot has many of them, and that is why it is my favorite movie. Some of the life lessons are: invite the new kid to play, don't overthink things and keep trying, believe you are worthy, go above and beyond for your friends, and confront your fears. Throughout the movie, the boys developed an unbreakable bond, went on adventures, and loved roasting each other; it was hilarious. I love how the movie is set up to teach others lessons and to entertain them as well. The Sandlot started off with Scotty, Smalls, moving to a new neighborhood. Scotty saw a group of boys walking with baseball equipment. He follows the boys to the Sandlot. Scotty wanted to play baseball but didn't know how. The boys invite him to play and Benny taught him how to catch. The first couple of life lessons the movie teaches the viewers is to invite the new kid to play and believe you are worthy. You should always be open to hang out with new people and make new friends. With Scotty not knowing how to play baseball and being the new kid in the neighborhood, he had to believe in himself. He had to keep trying his best to not overthink things, so he could get a spot on their team and do good. Slowly but surely, the boys became close friends and a great team that worked together. Together they went on funny and touching adventures. From playing baseball every day at the sandlot to spending some nights in the tree house, going to the carnival, and running into the other baseball team, the boys developed an unbreakable bond. The boys ran into a problem at the sandlot one day though. They hit their last ball over the fence and they couldn't get it because of the Beast, an English Mastiff. Struggling to find the change to buy a new ball, Smalls told the boys that he had a ball they could use; they got all excited and told him to go get it. He ran home, went into his stepdad's collector's room, and grabbed a ball off of his collector's shelf. That ball was not just a baseball though, it was a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, an American professional baseball player whose career in the Major League Baseball spanned 22 seasons. The boys insist that Smalls should be the one who got ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Burke suggests that transience in Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping is a type of pilgrimage, and that "the rigors and self–denials of the transient life are necessary spiritual conditioning for the valued crossing from the experience of a world of loss and fragmentation to the perception of a world that is whole and complete" (717). The world of reality in Housekeeping is one "fragmented, isolated, and arbitrary as glimpses one has at night through lighted windows" (Robinson 50). Nor will they, like Edmund and Helen, submit to a premature death in the water; instead they pursue a spiritual transience that will lead them to an earthly state of transcendent grace. The thoughts and emotions that occur in connection with water are triggered by the lake, and they help Ruth choose transience over any other form of existence. When water floods Fingerbone, the boundaries are overrun, exposing the impermanence of the physical world, and the world's own natural push towards transience. Water shifts the margins, warning us that the visible world only shows us part of the whole––or perhaps even a mere reflection of a false reality. After the fantastic train wreck in which Ruth's grandfather perished, the lake sealed itself over in ice, changing boundaries again, while it concealed, like a secret, the last traces of the victims with the illusion of its calm surface. The lake, a source of beauty and darkness, life and death, is "the accumulated past, which vanishes but does not vanish, which perishes and remains" (172). Water carries the symbolic possibility for rebirth– the flood causes the graves in the town cemetery to sink, "so that they looked a little like...empty bellies," suggesting that the dead were born into the receding waters (62). Hyphen Analysis Living on a Hyphen: Examining the Fluidity of Identity and Belonging Within a Bicultural Context in Ruth Ozeki's A Tale For the Time Being In A Tale For the Time Being, Ozeki Ruth uses the character of Nao to portray the struggles of negotiating between two distinct cultures and what it means to live on a hyphen. The hyphen represents disconnection and connection simultaneously. Liu defines hyphenated identity as "involving the coexistence, rather than the merging of two cultures" (33). In other words, two distinct entities belong together, but never successfully merge into one because the individual finds it difficult to fully associate with either of the two cultures. In Ozeki's novel we witness how bicultural experiences shape Nao's sense of identity and belonging as she grapples with the complexities of moving from one country to another. For first generation immigrants in North America, acceptance into the mainstream society requires them to "learn or improve their English language skills and adapt to its cultural practices" (Liu 1). Liu believes second generation immigrants are better equipped to accomplish this because they are either "born in the host country or migrated at a young age" (1). When Nao's family moved to Sunnyvale, Nao learned English quickly and internalized American values and norms. • 31. Book Of Ruth Essay Introduction The book of Ruth gathers much attention from its readers because of its briefness and simplicity. The book of Ruth is set in ancient Israel in the later portion of the Judges era, as it serves as a bridge between the Judges rule and the monarchy is 1 & 2 Samuel. This order comes from the Septuagint, and is very close chronologically. The book has a relative calmness to it that sharply contrasts the environment it is set in. To the inexperienced reader, the book may seem like just a short story, with little historical background. However, to the experienced and diligent biblical reader, it much more than that, as it contains many themes that are viewed through the all important eyes of a woman. Background Information In ancient Israelite culture, a woman's entire life, from her societal standing to her source of income, rested entirely upon her husband's shoulders. In the beginning of the book of Ruth, even though there is a great famine in the land, Naomi is still taken care of because she has the security of her husband and sons. However, when her husband and sons pass away, she is left with absolutely nothing because as a woman, she is viewed as essentially a second–class citizen at best. After the death the death of her husband and sons, Naomi turned to the only family she had left, her two widowed daughter–in–laws. She tried to convince both of them to follow her to Bethlehem. She debuted as a teenage model in a black and white striped swimsuit that came with sunglasses, high– heeled shoes, and gold–colored hoop earrings (see Figure 1). Her body was shapely with movable head, arms, and legs. Barbie was the first doll in America with an adult body. America's Reaction Ruth Handler realized that pretending about the future was a part of the growing up process. While she watched her daughter, Barbara (who Barbie is named after), playing with paper dolls, Handler formulated the idea of creating an adult doll. This was not necessarily a new idea because there were adult fashion dolls, such as Cissy and Miss Revlon, which were on the market. The phenomenon behind Barbie was that she was an affordable toy that had those same grown up accessories as the other adult dolls. As soon as Barbie was introduced to the public, her mature body horrified many adult females. Mothers said they would not allow their child to play with Barbie because they were wary of her sex appeal. Mattel conducted a study with mothers and daughters before they introduced Barbie. The impact of the Barbie doll on eating habits was shown in a study where girls from ages 5 to 8 were shown pictures of either a Barbie or a more lifelike doll, and the girls who saw the Barbie doll had a stronger urge to eat less (Berk). What most people tend to overlook about Barbie is the reason and inspiration of her creation, the feminine cultivation she displays, and the diversity and positivity of her life and personality. When Barbie is brought up the first thing people will think of is her figure. With a tiny waist, slim legs, and particularly small hands and feet, this is the main tool that people on the countercheck of Barbie's popularity use to attack the doll's positive features, encouraging the idea that Barbie's unrealistic shape causes body image issues and insecurities in young children; ... This is important because it encourages young children to become who they want to be and do what they desire to do, even if it means breaking away from society's standards. • 46. Essay about Babe Ruth On February 6, 1895, Kate Schamberger Ruth gave birth to her first child. George Herman Ruth, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the first of eight children born to Kate and George Herman Ruth. Ruth's father worked as a bartender and ultimately opened his own tavern. Many believe that George was an orphan all his life, but for the first seven years of his life he was with his parents, but he survived without guidance on the dirty, crowded streets of the Baltimore riverfront. On June 13, 1902, George Herman Ruth took his seven year–old to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys. When George Ruth, Jr., appeared with Dunn at the ballpark the other players started cracking jokes, and one of the players quipped, "Well, here's Jack's newest Babe." The rest of the players also started referring to young George as "Babe" and the name stuck. Thus began the storied career of Babe Ruth. In the mornings, Ruth would go into Landers' Coffee Shop in Boston, and it is here that he met Helen Woodford, a seventeen–year–old waitress. They married on October 17, 1914 in Ellicott City, Maryland. In December of 1919 Babe was sold to the New York Yankees. Prior to Ruth's arrival in New York, the team had never won a pennant. With "The Babe" as part of their team they became a dominant force in major league baseball, winning seven pennants and four World Championships from 1920 to 1933. In 1921, the couple adopted a baby girl, Dorothy. On January 11, 1929, at the age of 31, Helen died of suffocation in a fire. Dorothy, who was eight at the time, was away at boarding school. Grapes Of Wrath: Character Analysis And Summary In this section of the novel, Kathy observes that the veteran couples in the cottages mimic behaviour that they have seen on television programmes. Kathy then notices a change in the behaviour of Ruth, she too begins to display behavioural traits picked up from TV and the veterans. These traits confuse Tommy at first, when Ruth hits his arm he "[turns] abruptly to Ruth and [goes] 'what?'" to which Ruth glares furiously, showing how they differ in personality (Ruth tries desperately to fit in, Tommy does not). Kathy, who is particularly irritable on that day as Ruth has blurted out the entire plot of the book Kathy was trying to read, confronts Ruth about how she hits Tommy's arm when they say goodbye. The idea of moving on is presented in this section by Ruth who suggests how the students of Hailsham are gradually growing up and moving on from their Hailsham days, except from Kathy. This brings us on to another theme which is the idea of friendship and relationships; Kathy and Ruth begin to fight when Kathy mentions odd mannerisms in Ruth and Tommy's relationship, such as the way she slaps his elbow when saying goodbye. Whilst arguing, we see that Ruth and Kathy's friendship has become more distant that previously at Hailsham, as Ruth and Kathy do not get on as well as they used to and have more disagreements. One explanation for this could be the fact that Ruth seems to alter her personality and behaviour in order to fit in and attempt to be popular, this is shown by the fact that she mimics the veterans at the cottages. Ruth's mimicking may also be explained by the clones' lack of proper adult role models when growing up; the clones form behavioural habits and learn how to act from copying characters in television programmes and students older than them. This suggests to us the theme of family, or rather lack of it in the clones' case, and how we learn from our parents and relatives around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. Rosemary's Baby Analysis The Horror of Rosemary's Baby (1968) Horror films share similar characteristics. Horror is meant to enact fear into its audience. Most horror films scare their audiences by using vampires, zombies, ghosts, blood, or gore. However, the film, Rosemary's Baby (1968), scares its audiences, not by blood and gore. Rosemary's Baby is one of the scariest films made, but does not conform to the normal horror genre. Roman Polanski's film tells a story of a young mother who manipulated to give birth to Satan's baby. Guy Woodhouse (John Cassavetes), an actor, is enticed by wealth. He is promised by the old couple next door (Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer), who are part of a Satanic cult, riches in exchange for his wife's, Rosemary (Mia Farrow), womb. The girl was given dolls to play with, but she does not understand why she has to play with them and what makes the dolls beautiful. It is made clear that the girl never wanted dolls and nobody ever asked her what she wanted as a toy, yet the society she lives in tells her that girls play with dolls and nothing else. This story raises several interesting ideas, such as why were dolls made and why does society want girls to play with dolls? A larger question that the story raises is whether or not there is negative or positive effects on girls who play with dolls. Dolls have been around for a long time, but no one knows how dolls were created or their main purpose. Some research found that Barbie were created for various reasons. In addition, dolls also started many controversies among parents and scientists. There have been various studies conducted concerning the role of dolls on various aspects of a girl's life. Some of the studies conducted focused on girls playing with various types of dolls and how the dolls affected their self–esteem and body image. • 58. Barbie Essays Barbie Since the beginning of time, toys have often been an indicator of the way a society behaves, and how they interact with their children. For example, in ancient Greece, artifacts recovered there testify that children were simply not given toys to play with as in the modern world. The cruel ritual of leaving a sick child on a hillside for dead, seems to indicate a lack of attention to the young (Lord 16). The same is true of today's society. As you can see with the number of toy stores in our society, we find toys of great value to our lives and enjoy giving them to children as gifts. Ask just about any young girl what she wants for Christmas and you'll undoubtedly get the same answer: "A Barbie." But what exactly has caused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, the Barbie doll was so popular that three years after her release in 1959 Mattel was still filling orders from her first year (Long 17). It wasn't until the late 1960's that critics began "comparing Barbie to a Playboy Bunny and calling her a corrupter of youth" ("Bad Girl" 3). One woman commented, "She's an absurd representation of what a woman should be" ("Bad Girl" 3)––and that's exactly what many others thought she was, too. With such impossible real–life measurements of 5'9" tall, 36"–18"–33" bust, waist, and hip (Benstock and Ferriss 35), it's easy to see why mothers across the country banned the doll from their homes and refused to let their impressionable young daughters be influenced by a piece of painted plastic (Bestock and Ferriss 35). Since dolls have often been responsible for teaching children what society deems important or beautiful, many concerned parents wondered why Mattel did not design a doll that taught more valuable lessons than dressing pretty and being dangerously skinny (Edut 19)? Who said a runway model was best suited for teaching a child what is beautiful anyway? "According to a Mattel spokesperson, a Kate Moss figure is better suited for today's fashions" (Edut 19), and that is one reason why Barbie must be so disproportional. A Reflection Of The Human Species On Earth Miriam Cortes FYS 111.08 29 October 2017 Professor Howie I have reached earth in Evansville Indiana where I have found a place to observe the human species on earth, in a place called a "library". The library is a location where students study subjects in a gathered location that is surrounded by walls of scriptures. The majority are using something called "google" that provides the answers to the most basic questions about our universe and are very dependent on their technology, with things like phones and computers. Whenever the humans are not talking to each other they are on their phones as is their lives depended on it and they refuse to travel without them not even to the restroom. Their interactions amongst each other are very minimal because they are very segregated. The groups are separated by interests like things called "majors" or "classes". They seem to travel in groups and are not aware of what is going on around them because they don't seem to care about the individuals that are trying to concentrate intensely on the bonded scriptures in English. They keep their scriptures in a "backpack" which is sewn fabric secured with two–sided teeth that can open and close. Also, all their "backpacks" are different and seem to reflect their individual personalities and interests. The louder humans have louder color backpacks and the quieter humans have a more muted colored "backpack". Most seem to care for something called "Nike" which has been branded on almost all ... The sugar daddy/sugar baby relationship shows the three things most desired in today's society, "youth, wealth, and beauty." Ruth Padawer, writer for the New York Times Magazine, writes, "Heterosexual relationships, including marriage, have long involved economic transactions, but Bailey points out that when men provided financial security, they traditionally did so in exchange for a woman's sexual virtue (and potential to bear and rear children,) not for sexual thrills. For that, they often turned to prostitutes and mistress, involving a frank money–for–sex exchange." The sugar baby relationship is a directly linked to the new generation's values on sex and relationships. Traditionally, a prostitute would be engaging a direct sex for money exchange, but now men want someone where they can also have a friendship/companionship with. Also, what's most startling is the number of sugar babies on college campus. Since then, baseball has become competitive, exciting and full of memorable moments. Baseball is one of America's most popular sports. It takes skilled players to make the game entertaining and fun. Some skilled players include: Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial. But none of these players are as good as Babe Ruth. George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in a small house in Baltimore, Maryland. George grew up a bum, living on the streets of the Baltimore waterfront. George was a disrespectful kid that always ran away from school. He also smoked and played pranks on people. One day, a man named Brother Matthias saw George's energy and wanted to harness that energy for baseball. Matthias could hit a baseball over the fence, using just one arm. This inspired George to play baseball. One day in a baseball game, George was up to bat facing an inexperienced pitcher. George started laughing and making fun of him. Matthias stopped George and told him, "If you think that you can do better, let's see you go out there and pitch." The next inning, George went up to the mound and pitched. He had no clue how to pitch but he threw harder than anyone in the league. A minor league team's coach saw him play, and asked the young 19 year old to sign a contract with his team! Interestingly, John likes to go bunburying as Ernest Worthing in the city of London. He falls in love with a woman named Gwendolen Fairfax and proposes to her. Jack is delighted to discover that Gwendolen returns his affections. However, he finds out that Gwendolen is fixated on the name Earnest in which the name "inspires absolute confidence." She makes it clear that she would not consider marrying a man who name was not Ernest. Jack therefore has to get christened, but must get approved from Lady Bracknell. Jack almost passes the test, but must bring up his heritage. Ultimately, Jack's only memory of his heritage is that he was found in a handbag in a cloakroom at Victoria Station. In order to marry Gwendolen, he must discover his true past. The connection between his past is finally unveiled when Lady Bracknell spots Miss Prism and demands to know where the baby she was responsible was after Miss Prism disappeared twenty– eight years ago. Miss Prism's memory recounts that she lost the baby after absent–mindedly placing it in a handbag in which she had meant to place the manuscript for a novel she had written. She had left the handbag in the cloakroom of a railway station. Piecing the memories together, it turns out that John's name is actually Ernest and is the son of Lady Bracknell's sister. It turns out John was ironically telling the truth that his name is Ernest. Also, Cecily keeps a diary in order to enter the secret wonders of her life. She states that if she didn't write them down, she'd forget them. Cecily points out that memory is usually inaccurate and therefore has a diary to accurately remember what has occurred. All in all, memory in this play is used to discover Jack's heritage through the memories of multiple characters and used as points in history Moving on, The Glass Menagerie is a memory play narrated by the character Tom Wingfield who recounts one of his biggest regrets.
