We’re here to tell you a little about NAB, what this organization does, and share some of our experience there.
We’ll be discussing the above 3 in detail.
Education involves teaching them how to survive, not just about reading & writing.
Personality Development: This involves teaching the blind stuff about communication skills, personal grooming and building confidence. Counseling is about guiding those who have lost their sight later in life.
Library full of real Braille books especially helping blind people for college.Braille courses are held for blind students to train them to read Braille.New facilities opened: Recording RoomIt needs volunteers to record literature, and other text into audio format. This is more convenient to the Blind, as they can rewind, forward and play at their own pace.
Life Skills: The blind here are taught much more than just reading and writing in braille. They are taught to be self-sustainable. That is, be independent and learn to cook, wash their clothes, exercise and enjoy their leisure time without assistance.
Computer training involves teaching them basic computer operations. >They are thought how to use word, how to handle a keyboard, using keyboard shortcuts. >I saw a keyboard with Braille inscription. But, they’re trained to not rely on that. >They use a text to speech software which speaks out every letter typed. >The software is downloadable, free, no problems with that. >They can get simple receptionists jobs with this training and also a means of income for themselves. > The best example would be the receptionist we met at the centre. She was blind, and yet she entered our names in the visiting log using the computer. Using Phones : They’re also trained to use phones which read aloud the numbers dialed, the contacts picked and the information of an incoming number.
Most important means of income for the residents of the hostel at the Delhi NAB centre. Here, they make diwali lamps, candles, and stands. This job is a mechanical task where you make the candles and wrap colourful thread around it. However, Volunteers are needed to ensure they look good and gluing some colourful parts to the candle.
These are the photos we’ve taken of the Handicraft Unit in NAB.
Finally, we reach how to help them out. AS mentioned on the screen, you can help them out by donating, sponsoring or even just volunteering from time to time.
