Television, film, theater, literature, radio and gaming were traditional forms of
entertainment. For the last 20 years we have been witnessing the development of new
entertainment devices characterized by: mobility, interactivity, digitization and
convergence capability. Digital games, mobile phones and web 2.0 platforms are part
of contemporary entertainment culture. Through these platforms users are becoming
not only participants but producers and social networks are quickly spreading.
The master class will be constituted by one seminar and an open conference. The
guest-speaker will be Professor Joyce Goggin.
2. JOYCE GOGGIN
Joyce Goggin is an Associate Professor at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, where she teaches
literature, film and new media. Her interests include gambling, gaming and money and their
representation in various media. She has written on gambling in the novel, Las Vegas in film,
games and narrative, and seventeenth-century painting.

AUDIENCE
The Center for Communication & Culture aims at bringing together expert researchers in order
to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies. The main
emphasis of this Master Class is on providing PhD students and young scholars interested in
the theme of entertainment, from a broad perspective, a setting where they can get in touch
with experts in the field, and meet students and academics with similar interests.
3. FEES
Participation is free of charge for doctoral students who are enrolled in the FCH’s doctoral
programs.
Doctoral students from other institutions will have to pay a small fee – 50€, that includes
documentation, coffee-breaks and a certificate.
