     season), anonymous, relatively thankless.
     Each truck        1 driver
                       1 thrower
     not much variety for either worker
     and not much on-the-job
    Purchase newer trucks
     –   Auto – lift and dump the garbage cans.
     –   1 truck 1 person – no need thrower
2.       Minimize the time takes to collect the trash.
         ensure max. efficiency
     -     Problem :
         1) Time traffic light
         2) Pace themselves to starts and stops
         3) Know the route without needing to consult a map
             , even know the route work still can be grueling.
         4) Each route finished each day.
             • No one will tolerate garbage left on the curb after
                  assigned pickup day.
             • Even if a traffic accident or construction brings traffic
                  to standstill.
         5) Need to collected the rubbish followed the schedule.
Can you use the job characteristic model
(JCM) to redesign the job of the trash
collector to be internally motivation?
how?
JCM specifies three critical psychological states that
     occur for work to be internally motivating. First,

1.     Workers must experience the work as meaningful.
       They must view their job as being important.

2.     Experience responsibility for work outcomes.
       They must feel responsible for work being done well.

3.     Knowledge of results.
       They must know how well there are performing their
       jobs.
Psychological states arise from jobs that are strong on
     five core job characteristics, that is:

1.    Skill variety
      - the number of different activities performed in
      job.

2.    Task identify
      - the degree to which a job, from beginning to
      end, requires completion of a whole and identifiable
      piece of work.
3.   Task significance
     - the degree to which a job is perceived to have
     substantial impact on others inside or outside the
     organization.

4.   Autonomy
     - the degree to which a job gives workers the
     discretion, freedom, and independence to decide
     and when to accomplish the work.
5.   Feedback
     - the amount of information the job provides to
     workers about their work performance.
Assume that the trash collection job is
not internally motivating. Identify areas
where you can strengthen the job’s core
characteristics and give specific
examples.
Five job redesign techniques that strengthen a job’s
     core characteristic.

1.    Combining task
       Increases skill variety and task identity by
       joining separate, specialized task into a
       larger work modules.

2.    Natural work units
       Arranging tasks according to logical or
       meaningful groups. forming natural work units
       increase task identity and task significance.
3.   Establishing client relationship
       Increase skill variety, autonomy and feedback by
       giving employees direct contact with clients and
       customers.

4.   Vertical loading
       Publishing some managerial authority as
       manager to resolve customer problem.

5.   Opening feedback channels
      Finding additional ways to gives employees
      direct, frequent feedback about their job
      performance.
Is it possible to redesign the very
specialized job of garbage collector to
make it more satisfying? Is a redesign
feasible? In other words, do you redesign
