Farming poses many health and safety challenges. Farm-related injuries are underreported, with farming having the second highest rate of major injuries of any industry and accounting for 15-20% of work-related fatalities despite employing less than 1.5% of the workforce. The largest causes of major injury and death are transport accidents, falls, and contact with livestock or machinery. Prevention efforts face challenges as farming has an aging self-employed workforce who are resistant to regulation and have historically lacked safety training. While educational interventions have not been effective, financial incentives have been shown to encourage farmers to improve safety.
