LINCOLN, NE - Charles Dowd, retired San Francisco Firefighter, is still missing since
Thursday, September 13, 2012 after boarding an AMTRAK train from Emeryville, CA
bound for Chicago, IL. The Dowd family will expand their search today along the
AMTRAK line running from Lincoln, NE toward Ft. Morgan CO. The family is still
following up on potential public sightings of Dowd in or near Lincoln, NE. Additionally,
the Dowd family asks the kind local volunteers who have assisted in the search for
Charlie to please continue looking—specifically in the towns or areas east and west of
Lincoln, NE.
The Dowd Family believes that search efforts and cooperation from AMTRAK and local
police intensified in large part after news of Charles Dowd quickly went viral on
Facebook, the Internet, strong support by local community and church groups, and by
extensive coverage of the story in national media. Previously, AMTRAK made several
conflicting statements. Yesterday, in a conference call facilitated by the San Mateo, CA
Police Dept., AMTRAK shared their report and timeline with the family.
Amtrak disclosed that a passenger saw Dowd near a door of the train approximately
10:00 PM, Thursday (9/13/12). Another passenger found an exterior door ajar at
approximately 11:00 PM and reported this to AMTRAK staff in following the morning.
AMTRAK called for Dowd over the loud speaker with no response at approximately
9:30am. AMTRAK officials are now saying that Dowd may have opened the exterior
door and fallen out. This would have put the train’s location somewhere between Fort
Morgan, CO and McCook, NE an area with approximately 160 miles of rain lines. The
Yuma County Sheriff’s department is coordinating the search there. The Dowd Family is
asking for support and assistance from those communities in that effort.
