Take a position for or against (based either on your own
position or one assigned to you) on the following controversial
statement. Discuss it here in this forum by creating a new
thread. In his essay “The End of Human specialness,” Lanier
(2010), author of You Are Not a Gadget, said, “A post-
Facebook generation is appearing, and its members are
questioning the legacy of their predecessors. Recently, when I
asked students not to tweet or blog during a lecture, they stood
and cheered” (p. 7). These authors are among those who view
social networking as a distraction to learning, rather than a
resource to support learning. What examples and research
results (not opinions) could you use to either support or refute
this position?
I want you to replay to the above text ( do you agree or
disagree) This is a discussion between me and another student
Technology and social media have allowed us to communicate
and keep in touch with many we would not see due to distance
or careers. However, it can also cause distractions. Quite
frequently, I find myself opening the Facebook or Instagram app
on my phone out of boredom. It has become a habit. Allowing
social media in the classroom is opening a door for distractions
and unnecessary problems.
Websites that students visit could be a distraction to other
students. According to Sam Goundar, many students complained
to professors about the web usage other students had during
lectures (Goundar 2014). It has become a common problem in
classrooms that students are more interested in social media
than the lecture being taught. Also, research shows that if the
laptop being used in class is not for actual class work, the
students become distracted and disengaged from class activities
(Goundar 2014). According to one study, two studied groups sat
through the same lecture. One group was allowed to use their
computers, the other group was not. After the lecture, the
students completed a test. The results showed that those allowed
to use their computers scored lower than those that did not
(Goundar 2014). Those that used their computers also searched
other websites and checked their social media pages.
Technology is not going anywhere. Students are constantly
surrounded by it. It is important to teach them how to use it and
show them how resourceful it can be, but technology needs to
be controlled. Technology should only be used in the classroom
for related activities with close monitoring.
I want you to replay to the above text ( do you agree or
disagree) This is a discussion between me and another student
Social Media within the learning environment can be either an
asset or a distraction to the learning process. Research done by
Sanzhar Nayzabekow states that "Social networking sites
frequently have a negative impact on the academic performance
of students.Sanzhar Nayzabekov says in her article "Negative
impact of social networking sites on academic performance of
students”, found on the website Academia.edu, "Despite the fact
that a relatively large number of social network sites including
Facebook were initially created for learning purposes, there is
some evidence that most social network site users show almost
no attitudes towards finding academic information”. In fact, the
use of these social networks often results in lower grades. For
example, Nayzabekov also says a large amount of Facebook
users check their Facebook a significant amount of times
throughout the day while updating their statuses more than 5
times per day.”
After observing, Sanzhar Nayzabekow point of view on social
media within the classroom I agree with this point of view.
From experience within my classroom the temptations of
abstaining from viewing social media websites during class can
be extremely difficult for students. Throughout the hallways
during the change of classes, many days I would hear students
discuss what is taking place on the different social media sites.
With that being said, it is quite rigid for a student focusing on
status updates and what's new on social media during the class
period to be focused on what is being taught in class. Social
media has become a huge part of student's everyday life, which
makes it extremely different for students to utilize technology
within the classroom and stay on task with the lecture. When
students are focused on anything outside of what's being
lectured on this creates a lower retention rate and a lower
retention rate usually leads to lower grades. However, I do feel
that the usage of social media during lecture can be reduced if
the educator is mobile throughout the classroom.

I want you to replay to the above text ( do you agree or disagree) This is a discussion between me and another student Technology and social media have allowed us to communicate and keep in touch with many we would not see due to distance or careers. However, it can also cause distractions. Quite frequently, I find myself opening the Facebook or Instagram app on my phone out of boredom. It has become a habit. Allowing social media in the classroom is opening a door for distractions and unnecessary problems. Websites that students visit could be a distraction to other students. According to Sam Goundar, many students complained to professors about the web usage other students had during
  • 2. lectures (Goundar 2014). It has become a common problem in classrooms that students are more interested in social media than the lecture being taught. Also, research shows that if the laptop being used in class is not for actual class work, the students become distracted and disengaged from class activities (Goundar 2014). According to one study, two studied groups sat through the same lecture. One group was allowed to use their computers, the other group was not. After the lecture, the students completed a test. The results showed that those allowed to use their computers scored lower than those that did not (Goundar 2014). Those that used their computers also searched other websites and checked their social media pages. Technology is not going anywhere. Students are constantly surrounded by it. It is important to teach them how to use it and show them how resourceful it can be, but technology needs to be controlled. Technology should only be used in the classroom for related activities with close monitoring. Research done by Sanzhar Nayzabekow states that "Social networking sites frequently have a negative impact on the academic performance of students.Sanzhar Nayzabekov says in her article "Negative impact of social networking sites on academic performance of students”, found on the website Academia.edu, "Despite the fact that a relatively large number of social network sites including Facebook were initially created for learning purposes, there is some evidence that most social network site users show almost no attitudes towards finding academic information”. In fact, the
  • 3. use of these social networks often results in lower grades. For example, Nayzabekov also says a large amount of Facebook users check their Facebook a significant amount of times throughout the day while updating their statuses more than 5 times per day.” After observing, Sanzhar Nayzabekow point of view on social media within the classroom I agree with this point of view. From experience within my classroom the temptations of abstaining from viewing social media websites during class can be extremely difficult for students. Throughout the hallways during the change of classes, many days I would hear students discuss what is taking place on the different social media sites. With that being said, it is quite rigid for a student focusing on status updates and what's new on social media during the class period to be focused on what is being taught in class. Social media has become a huge part of student's everyday life, which makes it extremely different for students to utilize technology within the classroom and stay on task with the lecture. When students are focused on anything outside of what's being lectured on this creates a lower retention rate and a lower retention rate usually leads to lower grades. However, I do feel that the usage of social media during lecture can be reduced if the educator is mobile throughout the classroom.
