Politics
Politics is an aspect of life which includes all the ideas,
processes, theories and entities which concern themselves with
dividing power and controlling and managing social groups. The
study of politics is called political science and this branch
focuses on how individuals create a society by balancing power
to hold it together. For effective decision making in the society,
people came up with the idea of electing individuals to manage
their affairs and making political decisions for them. Most of
these decisions influence the way of living of people in all
aspects from what to dress and eat to how they associate with
other people. To enable fair representation, societies and
nations hold elections to determine who will represent them and
help in making decisions for them (Tocqueville, 17).
Increasing the sphere of involvement in politics may result to
bad policies which in turn lead to increased vice in the society.
No matter how humans try to ignore it, the field of politics
influences most happenings in the world, as it can be seen in
newspapers and news on TV news. It is also seen in how people
discuss it all the time and at some points shouting about it
openly. Politics are applied in everyday life. They are used in
creating friendships, choosing enemies and also showing who to
respect and who not to (Tocqueville, 4).
It’s easy to figure out why politics play a major role in peoples
life; decisions made by politicians determine a lot in terms of
what people are supposed to do and how he law permits to do it.
3. During elections, people vote for a lot of things including what
their children will learn in school, and how the learning will
take place. Politicians make laws which control people on what
to drink, eat or smoke and the right places to do such activities.
People vote for Politician’s to determine who they will marry or
who to love. This shows that in the main aspects of life, we
have given politics an upper hand in determining what we
should do. We vote on which people are allowed to marry those
they love. This explains why politics is a very important aspect
of our everyday life (Goldhammer, 16).
The main question is still unanswered which is, do people really
want to live in a world where our everyday’s decision is made
through political aspects? Most people seem to think so since
politics give democracy a chance and in a way engage the
common people in the activities of decision making. A
politically engaged citizenry will not only make more decisions
democratically but also be better people for it. The aspect of
politics, when sufficiently unhijacked by selfish individuals
sufficiently embraced by an actively democratic polity, makes
us better people. Despite these positive gaining’s, the ever
increasing scope of politics and political decision making in the
society has led to a negative effect. Relying on the aspect of
politics alone to make decisions regarding our lives and at the
same time our souls is not good. Before people commit to the
aspect of politics in making decision, they should really look
into the effects of politics itself on its decisions and people’s
virtues (Goldhammer, 11).
During elections, politics limits choice of the electorate mainly
to two candidates, who are chosen by how famous and popular
they are. At end it all comes down to either this guy gets
elected, or that guy does. Most people believe in politics
because of the one vote one voice rule, which most people think
is fair because it makes peoples voices to be heard. What people
don’t know is that ordinary citizens never matter when it comes
to choosing who will represent them in office. The decisions are
made only by people who have the sufficient political power to
4. influence these decisions. Politicians are clever because they
only seem to care about the rights of those who will influence
the outcome of the vote and mostly the rights of minority
groups are never checked. Opinions from minority groups
become irrelevant or just not important to register on the
nation’s political radar (Tocqueville, 6). Having only two
choices in the aspect of political lives makes people think only
in terms of black and white. This means that they only think on
who should win and who shouldn’t. Mostly people clash over
which party to support.
Currently, politics resemble rival sports fans that are willing to
die for their favorite team even if it means winning by violence.
For example in America, the citizen are divided between the red
team (Republicans) and the (Democrats). Supporters of the
other political parties don’t have much say when it comes to
elections, they are just mere spectators. The aspect of politics
has been given too much freedom to control people’s lives
through laws, which sometimes end up hurting the same citizens
it’s supposed to protect. What really go on in politics is people
who have power luring the poor to vote for the person of their
choice (Tocqueville, 4).
