Social Studies Chapter 5.2

I. Land Use and Culture
        a. environments: A natural surrounding {landscapes}{soil
        b. How does environment effect how land is used? The environment is harder
        to crop when it is cold. The people in that region must work with whatever
        landscape they have
    A. Cultures and Landscapes
            a. How have the rice farmers in the Philippines transformed the physical
            landscape for their benefit? The rice farmers in the Philippines cut into the
            land to make a more suitable landscape for farming.
    B. Land Use and Cultural Differences
        a. How do places with similar climates/landscapes have to adapt differently?
        The other countries have to adapt differently because of technology, supplies,
        and resources. For example water irrigation is different in two different
        location that share the same environmental settings.
II. Land Use and Economic Activity
    A. First-Level Activities
            a. What do people use to make products? They will usually make herbs,
            veggies, and fruits, and they use land and the sea at the first level of
    activity.
    B. Second-Level Activities
            a. What do people use to make products and where did they come from?
            At this level the raw materials from the earth are used in manufacturing.
            b. manufacturing: or the large-scale production of goods by hand or by
            machine.__________________________________________________
    C. Third-Level Activities
            a. What are these activities also know by? Do they produce anything?
    These activities are also known by services. They do not produce any goods, but
            other transport the goods to retail stores.
            b. How is the most of the world’s land used? The majority of the land is
    used in the First-Level Activity which is raw material.
    D. Stages of Economic Activity
            a. What are the three stages of Economic Activity and what is a
    characteristic of each level? First: this is the actual gathering of goods from earth
    or sea.        At the second level the material is being processed to create a good.
    This is called manufacturing. Third: at this level they are selling manufactured
            goods to retail stores. This could also be characterized by doctors or
    dentists.
III. Changes in Land Use
        a. colonization: is the movement of new settlers and their culture to a country.
    A. Colonization
a. What often occurred, and is occurring, after colonization to maintain
       livelihood in any given place? What is occurring is people move into places
and gave to change to landscape for a living. Some things that are occurring in
       any giving place like faming and other new things.
B. Industrialized and Sprawl
       a. industrialization: the growth of machine-powered production_______
       b. How are industrialization and sprawl related? With industrialization
comes a greater ability to change the landscape at a faster pace and with more
force.
       c. How did European colonization change the landscape in North and
South America? In North and South America they had to form farms and
creating       areas that allowed crop growth in order to feed the people.
