2. 2. Review: What is Conservation?
Protecting the land and resources so future generations can use them
We can manage resources wisely
3Rs
3. 3. Conservation of Energy
Which natural resources should we try and conserve and protect?
ALL natural resources: non/renewable, wildlife
How can we conserve these energy resources?
4. 4. Conservation of Soil
What effect do humans have on soil?
Soil is used for agriculture:
Growing and planting of crops: e.g. corn, banana
Native plants are replaced by these crops
What do crops need to grow?
Nutrients
These nutrients are taken out of the soil when crops are harvested
= soil depletion
If nutrients are not replaced, soil may not be able to grow more crops
5. 5. How can we conserve the soil?
Crop rotation
Changing the type of crops so more nutrients may stay in the soil
Fertilizer
Compost
Chemicals
6. 6. Conservation of Soil
Erosion:
When soil is removed by wind or water
Related to the TYPE of farming and management of the soil
Plows prepare land for crops, but special methods can reduce erosion
Terracing – very common in Colombia
Strip-cropping
7. 7. Recycling
Part of the 3Rs
Reduce, reuse and recycle
Recycling is: a process that changes an item or resource to be used again
Advantages?
Saves more of the resource being used
Saves land space that could become a landfill (where garbage goes)
