20th century decades project
1. Have you ever heard an older person comment how different things are now from when they
were your age? What is it that defines our times? If you were to meet someone from the distant
future, what would you share to help that person understand what life is like in 2009? If you had
the chance to go back in time, what clues or evidence would you look for to discover what it was
like to live then?
This project was created especially for you to have fun!
In this project, you will research the 20th Century. Working
in teams, you will research information on one decade of
the 20th Century. From your research, teams will create a
PowerPoint Presentation about that decade. Each person
will be responsible for creating slides for your decade.
Your presentation must satisfy the criteria listed below.
Teams must also create a Works Cited page citing the
resources (both printed and digital) that are used to create
your PowerPoint.
Powerpoint Criteria
1) Introduction:
a. Title—the decade and its slogan
b. Narrative—introduction to the decade
c. Collage of Photos—graphics and photos that highlight the decade
d. Timeline—3 events per year for the entire decade
2) In The News—Events:
a. United States Headlines—major events, scandals, wars, etc.
b. World Headlines—events outside the U.S. with global impact
c. Historical Events—social, political, military
d. Graphics/Photos for every category
3) In The News—People
a. Presidents and Vice Presidents—biographies, major contributions, goals
b. Military Leaders—biographies, why they were important, contributions
c. People who may have led a social movement—biographies, major contributions,
how they impacted people
d. Graphics/Photos for every category
4) Science and Technology
a. Inventions—descriptions, purpose, how they affected the world/people
b. Improvements to Existing Products—descriptions, how it was improved and
affect
c. Medical Breakthroughs—background info, description, impact
d. Space Exploration—background, description, impact on American life
e. Graphics/Photos for every category
2. 5) Leisure Time, Arts, Entertainment, Lifestyle
a. Popular forms of entertainment—how they influenced life or demonstrated
lifestyle
b. Major Entertainment Figures—what they were known for
c. Fashion Trends/Fads—connections between fashion and attitudes
d. Leisure Time Activities—how most people spent their time during this decade,
television, songs, dances, movies, books
e. Major Sports Teams—major teams and lesser known teams/sports
f. Olympic Events—both summer and winter
g. Graphics/Photos for every category
6) Works Cited Page (amount determined by team)
a. List “General Sources”—ones everyone used (“Team Sources”)
b. Each person must list specific Sources used for individual categories (“Gabe’s
Sources”)
c. All sources need to come at the end of the Powerpoint (not after individual
categories)
Extra Criteria:
• Powerpoint must last 40 minutes (one entire class period)
• Slides must be seamless—the same background, front, design for entire
project so no one would be able to tell who did which section
• Optional Enhancements: Fun slide transitions, background music, short
videos
Presentation Criteria
• Use your Powerpoint to teach a lesson to the class about your decade
• Each person must present his or her individual category
• Teams must divide up any additional slides (such as introductions, etc.)
• Must write a quiz of 7 or 10 questions for the class to complete
• Powerpoint must last 40 minutes (one entire class period)
Presentations Begin Monday, June 4
Team Work Rules:
1. Each member must contribute to Powerpoint. Slides must have name of creator.
2. Each member must present his or her portion of Powerpoint.
3. Quiz questions must be on major topics not tiny details.
4. Collaborate with your group. Work together. Get along. Have fun!
