TOURGUIDE
Biella is an old town founded in the Middle Ages. It became quite famous in the
eighteenth century thanks to its textile industries.
The largest park in Biella is "Giardini Zumaglini", which takes its name from a local
botanist called Maurizio Zumaglini. In the park you can find a fountain representing a
bear, the symbol of Biella, a playground and one of the best cafés and ice-cream
shops in Biella called “Lo chalet”.
Via Italia is one of the most popular streets in Biella. It’s a pedestrian area so you can
walk safely. Halfway you can find the biggest church, Il Duomo (the cathedral) and
next to it the Baptistery. Those two buildings are the most important monuments of
our town. The Baptistery was built on Roman remains and is the symbol of the
conversion of the town to Christianity. The structure is characterized by four
semicircular apses on four sides of a central square. The church of Santa Maria in
Piano, which is usually called Il Duomo, was built later in 1402, in place of an older
church. It was renamed after Santo Stefano when it was selected in 1772 as The
Cathedral. The interior is divided into three aisles, in which you can see some
frescoes from the older building.
The “Funicolare”(cableway) was built in 1885 and it is a famous means of transport
that allows people to reach “Piazzo” without too much effort.
“Piazzo” is the medieval village which was constructed in 1160, and it is considered
as the historical part of the town. There are many interesting places to visit there.
The first you reach by exiting the Funicolare is Piazza Cisterna. Famous for its
arcades, it used to be the town centre, the place where the market was held and
where the seat of municipality was placed. Other than that you can find the famous
academy of music” Perosi”.
Menabrea is an old local brewery set up in 1846. It exports its products all over the
world, and has made Biella popular in beer industry.
The” Teatro Sociale Villani” is the biggest theatre in Biella. It was built in 1875 and
nowadays it hosts local and national companies performing any kind of plays, from
musicals to classical comedies and tragedies.
