What motivated Portugal and Spain to begin the quest for
discovery?
The Spanish were busy exploring the Americas in search of new
conquests, riches, and even the Fountain of Youth. There were
two particularly spectacular conquests. The first was by
Hernando Cortez, who led a small army of several hundred men
against the Aztec Empire in Mexico. Despite their small
number, the Spanish could exploit several advantages: their
superior weapons and discipline.
How did the European powers command the New World?
In the first place, the movement is associated with a shift in
European life from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic seaboard.
Leadership in European political and economic life was coming
more and more into the hands of Portugal, Spain, France, and
England. These nations all had monarchies that were growing in
strength, increasing their control over the various classes within
the state, and consolidating their hold over the territories
subject to them. They all had Atlantic coastlines, and led the
way in seeking new trade routes and new lands.
What was the exchange made between the New and the Old
World called?
The Columbian Exchange refers to a period of cultural and
biological exchanges between the New and Old Worlds.
Exchanges of plants, animals, diseases and technology
transformed European and Native American ways of life.
Beginning after Columbus' discovery in 1492 the exchange
lasted throughout the years of expansion and discovery. The
Columbian Exchange impacted the social and cultural makeup
of both sides of the Atlantic.
