It’s your wedding day and you’re vegan…what do you do for cake? Cake is generally made from milk,
eggs, and butter so where and what do you turn to? Maybe you don’t have to turn to any alternative.
Kristi Touchette has a recipe to make wedding cakes and just
about any cake with out the use of milk, eggs, and butter for
vegans to enjoy. There was once a time in the early 1900′s
where milk and eggs were in short supply and her ancestors
had to look elsewhere for ingredients to make a cake. These
cake recipes were called Depression Cake, War Cake, and
Wacky Cake due to the time frame of when they were created
and were handed down from earlier family generations.
Touchette, now a vegan for the last 6 years never thought this recipe would come in handy until her
diet changed. Through this recipe, Touchette developed Ahimsa Custom Cakes, her own custom vegan
cakes business. Based out of Maine, Krisiti is now the go to cake specialist for all different occasions
and the most notable fact is that only 1 or 2 percent of her customers are actually vegan. Kristi believes
she developed her customer base due in part to her interesting flavors such as “French Toast” and to
the part that weddings consist of many people and while the customer might not be vegan, there are
attendees that are.
Kristi likes to put a lot of time and effort into her cakes and as a result, she won’t overbook herself in
order to do a good thorough job. With that in mind, her customers call 6 months in advance in order
to lock their cake in. For more information on Ahimsa Custom Cakes, check out there website
