THE MENTION OF
PICKLES AND JAMS
transports us to
grandmother’s stocked
kitchen cabinets. In the
current fast paced world
dominated by packaged
food, these homemade
accompaniments are
a luxury. Thankfully
Gaurav Tandon
understood our
plight and launched
Yummade, an online
portal offering 250
freshly produced, preservative-free items from well-known
homechefs across Mumbai, in February. So choose from bacon
butter by Amrita Rana’s Life Ki Recipe and pork pickle by Gitika
Saikia’s PakGhor, among others.
The idea for the website surfaced from Tandon’s task to
bring fresh alternatives to consumers. “The only way to do
it is to make fresh and sell fresh everyday. We realised that
people are already doing it but didn’t have access to market
due to issues varying from payment processing and packaging
to delivery. We offered them a suite of services,” explains the
founder, who was a former consultant with A.T. Kearney. “Dips
are made every day. Products like pickles and jams which have
a larger shelf life are made couple of days in advance.”
Yummade has 15 homechefs and requests from 150 more
to join. But Tandon follows a stringent food quality guideline
which looks into the cleanliness of kitchen, and other factors
before bringing any new person on board. With Yummade,
Tandon and his team is building a community of homechefs to
‘service the needs of the city.’ “We have regular meet ups with
chefs where we come up with ideas for food segments,” he
says. Tandon intends to bring more homechefs and introduce
newer segments like Indian snacks, frozen kababs and
breakfast cereals.
