Noon
Put on your sunscreen and
glares and bargain your way
through trinkets and knick-knacks
at Colaba Causeway. Celebrate
your loot with a beer at the touristy
Leopold Café, which is mostly
packed to the rafters. Don’t let this
ruin your mood though — the place
the novel Shantaram has created.
For those okay with elbowing
their way through for a picture, walk
through the Phool Galli (translates
to Flower Street) in Dadar. While
you're in Dadar, do gorge on the
famous Ashok vada pav.
After Dark
Hands down, the Taj Mahal
Palace Mumbai has the best
view of the Arabian Sea, with
undulating boats, in the backdrop
of the Gateway of India. Another
option is the Royal Bombay Yacht
Club, which has heritage rooms
with the same view.
Evening
At 6 pm, stop at the Drawing Room, located at Level 9
at The St. Regis Mumbai for their champagne sabering
ritual on Wednesday and Friday. This is a ceremonial
technique for opening a champagne bottle with a sabre, a
type of backsword. Each guest is served a glass on behalf
of the hotel. For those who don’t mind indulging, go on a
shopping spree at the High Street Phoenix and Palladium
Mall. Find high-end brands like Burberry, Zara, British
fragrance house Jo Malone London and Spanish clothing
brand Massimo Dutti here.
The city nurtures a funny bone — it is one of the best
places to attend a stand-up comedy show any day of the
week. Attend a gig at one of the many venues scattered
across the city. Check out the varied line-up of music gigs at
bars, and soak in the nightlife vibe that the city is famous for.

One of the most stunning ways
to savour the city is to get onto a
motorboat, sail away from Jetty 5 of
Gateway of India into the Arabian
Sea, and watch the cityscape from
a distance. As the sun goes down
and the lights come on, the calm of
the sea and the growing buzz of the
city are a perfect combination.

A BREAKDOWN FOR BEGINNERS TO THE
ISLAND OF PHUKET
Text FABIOLA MONTEIRO
Thailand is used to travellers. From bachelor parties to family
vacays, the island nation has seen it all — and Phuket, perhaps, has
seen the most. Tucked away in the southwestern corner of the country,
Phuket is a jigsaw of tourist traps and hidden gems. It’s the country’s largest
island, which means there’s a lot to choose from. Spend your mornings dipping
your toes in clear waters and your midnights dancing in trendy nightclubs. The
government is investing heavily in infrastructure, and a number of luxury hotels are slated to open on
the island soon. It’s clear, then, that forever-favourite Phuket — with its achingly beautiful beaches,
dense jungles and soothing spas — doesn’t disappoint.

Where’s the party?
Augmenting Phuket’s position as
Thailand’s party capital is a whole
plethora of world-class nightclubs
that provide amazing bang for your
tourist buck. One of the most iconic of
all Phuket clubs has got to be Illuzion
Phuket. Located along Bangla Road
in the Patong Beach area, this club
is ranked 48 out of 100 in the best
clubs in the world by DJ Mag, a publi-
cation dedicated to electronic dance
music and DJs. With over 300 VIP
tables, Illuzion Phuket can accommo-
date up to 5,000 partygoers.
Fans of BYOB will love Kor Tor
Mor as you can bring your own hard
drinks (you will be just charged for ice
and mixers). This fashionable night
club located near
Nimit Circle in the
main Phuket Town
is a magnet for
both tourists and
Phuket’s hip-n-hap-
pening brigade.
But be warned — it
has a formal dress
code. For live
music, head down
to Timber Hut on
Yaowarat Road
at the northern
end of Phuket Old
Town. Housed in a quaint, two-sto-
rey red-bricked building, Timber
Hut hosts a daily live music show
in which international and Thai
classics are performed by talented
and skilled musicians. Why, even
rock music greats like Aerosmith’s
Steven Tyler was here in 2013,
we’re told!
But if you’re more in the mood for
a chilled night out, head up to Quip
Sky Bar, Phuket’s happening rooftop
bar on the corner of Phuket and
Rasada Roads. This classy restobar
brings a distinctly artistic touch to
the old city, offering some stunning
views, yummy cocktails and a great
food menu with a rather unusual
line-up of lobster dishes.
Of Full Moons
and Foam!
Thailand’s famed full-moon parties
have amassed a whole legion of fans.
And there’s no better place than
Phuket for you to shed all inhibitions
and party the night away with strang-
ers. Though a lot smaller than the
notorious Koh Phangan Party on the
island of the same name, Phuket’s
best full-moon party is held once ev-
ery fortnight at the popular Paradise
Beach, a mere four kilometres from
the city center neighbourhood
of Patong.
Once you’re done paying the
1,000-baht entry fee — that includes
a bucket or two beers — expect to be
grooving to the beats belted out by
international DJs all through the night
under the full moon! But for those
who like a little break every now and
then, there are several chillout spots
set up around the main party zone,
and you can even grab a quick bite
at the restaurant alongside. The best
part of this party is the convenient
and complimentary shuttle bus ser-
vice that takes you to and from your
hotel to Paradise Beach.
Cottoning onto one of the hottest
trends in the world of partying — the
foam party — Phuket has its own
offering, at Famous Nightclub and

archipelago of nearly 2,000 islands of
the Maldives, grouped into 26 atolls, is
a bit like paradise. At its heart is the capital
Malé, possibly one of the most densely populated
capitals in the world. However, besides Malé,
the surrounding islands are stunningly beautiful,
blues waters and fringed by coral reefs playing
host to an incredible diversity of marine life.
Malé is packed with high-rises and brightly-
coloured buildings. It has its fair share of
quirky cafes and restaurants, bustling markets,
boutique stores tucked away in nooks and
corners, all of which give ample scope to
experience throbbing city life. But to get the true
extent of the possibilities, it is imperative to head
out a bit and indulge in activities like snorkelling,
manta rays. Watch the waters light up with

SNORKELLING
Possibly the easiest way to experience
the underwater world, there are a
humongous number of sites for snorkelling
around the islands. By far, the best places
are North and South Malé Atolls as well as
Ari Atoll. North Malé Atoll has spectacularly
coloured coral reefs that are home to
reef sharks, manta rays, moray eels and
octopuses, along with countless other smaller
sea creatures. On the other hand, South Malé
Atoll is home to soft corals and harbours
to observe. Ari Atoll is rich in plankton and
has an incredibly diverse variety of reefs and
so it is common to see a number of different
hammerheads, and manta rays. Though
snorkelling is done round the year, the best
time is between December and May; manta
season is between August and November.

In recent years, Maldives has become
something of a surfers’ paradise. Beautiful
turquoise waters and perfect waves to
conquer have been drawing enthusiastic

far, the Malé Atoll is the most popular area
spread all across the archipelago. Some of
the more well-known areas are at the quirkily
named Pasta Point in North Malé Atoll; here,
the waves reach the 4-6 feet range, though the
1-2 foot waves are also well liked by surfers.

ISLAND HOPPING
For those who love sailing or cruising the ocean waters,
it can be particularly satisfying to undertake an island
hopping trip. Depending on time and other factors, these
can be day trips or long overnight ones spanning up to
seven days. While Malé is the ideal base, it is also highly
urbanised. It might be a good idea to hop over to some
of the thousands of islands that constitute the Maldives
archipelago. Usually, island hopping can be done to
explore spectacular beaches, snorkelling and scuba diving
sites, and for other water activities. Island hopping can
also be done to explore other interesting islands such
as Thulusdhoo, which is known for manufacturing bodu
beru (big drums); Maafushi for its sandy beaches and
clear reefs; Thinadoo for just lounging and soaking up the
serenity of the ocean; Fulidhoo, which is thinly populated,
and so on.
But no matter how many days you spend and how many
activities you undertake, Malé is the kind of place that
will leave you wishing for a few more days to soak up as
much beauty and tranquillity as possible. It certainly does
ensnare the visitor with its siren call.
BIOLUMINESCENCE
For a touch of the surreal, there’s no place like
Maldives. The sea, sand and surf are not just
jaw-droppingly spectacular by day, but there are
certain areas in the Maldives where it can get rather
otherworldly. That’s when bioluminescent plankton
or ostracod crustaceans congregate in the waters
that wash up to the shore and give off an ethereal
blue-green light. On clear dark nights, the sight is
not only astonishing but beautiful as well. However,
there is no predictability to it and can occur on any
beach, and while it is highly likely during winter,
there is no season for it either.

101 The advent of digital technology changed
photography forever; the ability to make cameras
smaller and cheaper has brought democracy to
photography. Smartphone cameras are always at hand
and easy to use — today, everyone is potentially
a shutterbug.
Whether you're using a mobile phone or a DSLR, the
core aesthetics of photography remain the same. A
good photograph always appeals to us, irrespective of
what gadget was used to capture it.
If you've still got misgivings about your smartphone,
take heart: these cameras are getting better with each
day, and most of them produce good enough photos
to share on Instagram. Being lighter than DSLRs,
cellphone cameras are simply better in most situations
especially when it comes to casual photography.
And unlike DSLRs, smartphones come with image-
enhancing software. They also let you share your
images on social media instantly.
Given that the tool you use often determines your
mindset towards what you do, smartphone photography
can potentially encourage you to take photos without
thinking. You should rein yourself in with the thought
that photography is a thinking game.
Do not expect cellphone cameras to compete with
DSLRs (yet) in terms of image quality, great low-light
photos and faithful colour reproduction. Keeping these
considerations in mind, here's how to improve your
mobile photography game.
GoAir.in OCTOBER 2018 85
TAKE CONTROL: Go beyond
automatic mode. Chances are
that your cellphone camera
has a 'Pro' mode; learn to
tweak its basic settings such
as ISO and white balance.
READ THE LIGHT: Photography is
all about the play of light, and the
absence of it. So, experiment with
manual exposure settings. Your screen
will display an exposure scale or dial;
change its settings up and down until
FOCUS, FOCUS,
FOCUS: You need not
accept the smartphone’s
autofocus setting. Touch to
focus on the object which
has to be in sharp detail.
GRIDLINES AND GUIDELINES: Your camera may
have the ‘gridlines’ setting—usually something
called the rule of thirds gridlines. If you turn this
on, you will see the screen divided into a grid
pattern. This will help you compose your photo in
a better way. Use gridlines and you'll see a great
jump in the composition of your images.
FRAMING YOUR
PHOTO: Avoid the
tendency to take only
vertical images since
that’s how we normally
hold a smart phone. As
a thumb rule, photos of
landscapes come out
better in a horizontal
framing; portraits
are better taken in
the vertical mode.
There are, of course,
exceptions.
CHOOSE YOUR TOOL: Choose
a phone with better optical
qualities than software
enhancements, and remember
that the lens is what matters.
ZOOMING IN: Try not to ‘zoom in’ by
using your phone. It is possible and
advisable to walk closer to your subject.
Zooming, in most cases, creates
distortion in the image.
BEGONE, BLUR: Hold your phone steady
while shooting; this will give you a sharper
image, especially in low light. Use burst
mode to capture the right moment.
EDITING
SOFTWARE: There
are plenty of editing
apps out there,
but do not overdo
editing, especially
well-shot image can
be a head turner.
TRY, TRY AGAIN: Patience
matters. Didn’t get a good shot?
Try again, from different angles
and with different exposures,
light conditions and framing.

the midst of a heart-warming sense of

big and small alike, make their way to

immersions take place at Babu Ghat,
where an excellent option of viewing the

Who says you can only sport a saree or a kurta in
the festive season? “A major trend this time round is
dhoti sarees. They are cool, comfortable and versatile.
Wear them with an existing crop top or shirt or even a
sexy saree blouse,” says designer Pria Kataaria Puri.
You can even pair the dhoti with a jacket of the same
fabric. And the trend is not limited to women alone.
A properly draped dhoti paired with an elegant kurta
or sherwani is the coolest trend for men this season. A
minimally-embellished shawl over a sherwani speaks
of pure masculine poise that should be on display this
festive season. Men can also wear their embroidered
sherwanis with jeans. Neutralise the bling by pairing a
heavy sherwani with jeans with bare ankles.
Don’t just give up on last season's salwar kameez and
kurtis in your wardrobe. Instead of wearing them the
usual way with churidars and salwars, team them up with
palazzos or cigarette pants for a different look. Any kurti
or blouse paired with these pants will create in interesting
stones on it to instantly transform it to a dressy one.
Don’t reserve those crop tops just for your Saturday
nights. Pair them with a lehenga and wear a scarf instead
of a dupatta for a youthful look. Instead of your solid silk
kurta, or leggings, opt for a heavy skirt instead. Men who
want to stand out from the herd of sherwani- and kurta-
wearers can pair these items of clothing with jodhpuris and
tan brogues.

RECYCLE
STYLISHLY
Old dressy dupattas can easily
be stitched into exotic-looking
kurtas or funky halter tops. Wear
these with plain pants, skirts or
jeans. Seek help from your tailor
for designing. Don’t give up on
that heirloom saree. There’s
something so distinctly ageless
about fabric handed down to you
across generations. Layer it with a
delicate organza shirt for a touch of
modernity. Add a belt for some extra
oomph.
If you are wearing a heavily embellished lehenga, go for delicate jewellery or a single
statement piece. This will accentuate your look.
Too many prints can clash, so choose carefully.
If you plan to walk around a lot, kitten heels are perfect.
Choose smudge-free make up.
Avoid a flared petticoat with your saree as it makes you look
shapeless. Opt for a plain and fitted petticoat with side slits.
When it comes to accessories, do not match.
Break up the jewellery set and wear it separately.
ACCESSORISE WELL
A simple ensemble can be brought to life with the right accessories. “A golden
clutch goes well with anything and everything. When paired with festive wear,
it adds just the right touch of glamour and extravagance that the occasion
demands,” says Shah. And don’t overlook the choker from your mom’s collection.
This versatile piece of jewellery can instantly make an understated ensemble
pop with panache, especially if the choker is a metallic one adorned with gems
and stones. Another way to glam up your festive look is a maang tikka. Wear a
matching pair of earrings to complete the look. “For men the classic accessories

A NEW ETHNIC LOOK
Mr. Ashok T Kanawala, Vice President - Products & Business Development, HDFC Asset Management Co. Ltd.
KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH SIPs
MUTUAL FUND INVESTMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO MARKET RISKS, READ ALL SCHEME RELATED DOCUMENTS CAREFULLY
It’s a universal truth that stock markets are dynamic and nonlinear.
Unfortunately, most investors get carried away by bullish market
sentiments and expect investment journey to be a smooth joy ride.
Outcome – disillusioned investors giving up on the idea of long term
investment too soon and exiting investments at the wrong time.
Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) offered by fund houses are meant
to be a solution to this market timing conundrum faced by investors.
Volatility in the market makes it imperative to address few common
doubts about SIPs.
Is SIP really a good strategy vs lumpsum investment?
SIP is not a financial instrument but a simplified way of disciplined
investing. In a consistently rising market, lumpsum investments would
certainly outperform SIPs, as the cost of your investment would
progressively increase with every SIP installment. However, it is a
well-known fact that markets do not rise consistently and do witness
multiple ups and downs over time. In such volatile markets, SIPs
perform relatively better than lumpsum investments due to rupee cost
averaging by buying more units at lower prices and vice versa.
What is an Ideal time horizon for SIP investments?
An SIP in equity scheme should be for tenure of at least 3-5 years to
make the most of rupee cost averaging and mitigate risk of market
timing. When you invest through SIP over 3-5 years, likelihood of loss
reduces significantly. As your investment horizon increases to 3-5
years, divergence between maximum and minimum possible returns
reduces, thereby reducing the volatility of returns on your investment.
I started an SIP in a small cap fund at the beginning of the
year. However, over the past 6 months the fund has yielded
negative/low returns. Should I discontinue the SIP?
It’s true that small cap and mid cap segments which had a good year
in 2017, have undergone some correction in 2018. However, it is
important to continue SIPs during market downturns as investors
can accumulate more number of units with the same SIP installment,
thereby reducing the average cost per unit of investment. This
indeed is the essence of SIPs where investor accumulates more
units at a lower NAV and vice versa. Contrary to public perception,
market corrections are in fact a good time to start &/or continue an
SIP.
Considering the volatility in markets and fears of correction,
should I stop my SIP for few months and restart it later?
Market timing is fraught with risk. Unanticipated changes in market
can make the risk of misjudgment significant. The beauty of SIPs lies
in negating market timing risk and benefiting from market volatility
through disciplined investing and rupee cost averaging. Attempting
to time your SIPs by trying to identify perfect investing environment
defeats the purpose of SIPs.

the efforts of its engineering department. The
engineering department works behind the scenes and

This department is often known as the backbone of an
airline. It has a major role to play, right from taking delivery
of planes, readying their documentation, procurement of
aircraft at the end of lease, if applicable.
Each aircraft is maintained in a continued state of
airworthiness by subjecting it to periodical inspection

Augmenting Phuket’s position as Thailand’s party capital is a whole plethora of world-class nightclubs that provide amazing bang for your tourist buck. One of the most iconic of all Phuket clubs has got to be Illuzion Phuket. Located along Bangla Road in the Patong Beach area, this club is ranked 48 out of 100 in the best clubs in the world by DJ Mag, a publi- cation dedicated to electronic dance music and DJs. With over 300 VIP tables, Illuzion Phuket can accommo- date up to 5,000 partygoers. Fans of BYOB will love Kor Tor Mor as you can bring your own hard drinks (you will be just charged for ice and mixers). This fashionable night club located near Nimit Circle in the main Phuket Town is a magnet for both tourists and Phuket’s hip-n-hap- pening brigade. But be warned — it has a formal dress code. For live music, head down to Timber Hut on Yaowarat Road at the northern end of Phuket Old Town. Housed in a quaint, two-sto- rey red-bricked building, Timber Hut hosts a daily live music show in which international and Thai classics are performed by talented and skilled musicians. Why, even rock music greats like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler was here in 2013, we’re told! But if you’re more in the mood for a chilled night out, head up to Quip Sky Bar, Phuket’s happening rooftop bar on the corner of Phuket and Rasada Roads. This classy restobar brings a distinctly artistic touch to the old city, offering some stunning views, yummy cocktails and a great food menu with a rather unusual line-up of lobster dishes. Of Full Moons and Foam! Thailand’s famed full-moon parties have amassed a whole legion of fans. And there’s no better place than Phuket for you to shed all inhibitions and party the night away with strang- ers. Though a lot smaller than the notorious Koh Phangan Party on the island of the same name, Phuket’s best full-moon party is held once ev- ery fortnight at the popular Paradise Beach, a mere four kilometres from the city center neighbourhood of Patong. Once you’re done paying the 1,000-baht entry fee — that includes a bucket or two beers — expect to be grooving to the beats belted out by international DJs all through the night under the full moon! But for those who like a little break every now and then, there are several chillout spots set up around the main party zone, and you can even grab a quick bite at the restaurant alongside. The best part of this party is the convenient and complimentary shuttle bus ser- vice that takes you to and from your hotel to Paradise Beach. Island hopping can also be done to explore other interesting islands such as Thulusdhoo, which is known for manufacturing bodu beru (big drums); Maafushi for its sandy beaches and clear reefs; Thinadoo for just lounging and soaking up the serenity of the ocean; Fulidhoo, which is thinly populated, and so on. But no matter how many days you spend and how many activities you undertake, Malé is the kind of place that will leave you wishing for a few more days to soak up as much beauty and tranquillity as possible. It certainly does ensnare the visitor with its siren call. BIOLUMINESCENCE For a touch of the surreal, there’s no place like Maldives. The sea, sand and surf are not just jaw-droppingly spectacular by day, but there are certain areas in the Maldives where it can get rather otherworldly. That’s when bioluminescent plankton or ostracod crustaceans congregate in the waters that wash up to the shore and give off an ethereal blue-green light. On clear dark nights, the sight is not only astonishing but beautiful as well. However, there is no predictability to it and can occur on any beach, and while it is highly likely during winter, there is no season for it either. Smart Tips Text SUBHABRATA DAS PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY Boost your social media game with these handy tips and tricks from a professional photographer 84 OCTOBER 2018 GoAir.in 101 The advent of digital technology changed photography forever; the ability to make cameras smaller and cheaper has brought democracy to photography. Smartphone cameras are always at hand and easy to use — today, everyone is potentially a shutterbug. Whether you're using a mobile phone or a DSLR, the core aesthetics of photography remain the same. A good photograph always appeals to us, irrespective of what gadget was used to capture it. If you've still got misgivings about your smartphone, take heart: these cameras are getting better with each day, and most of them produce good enough photos to share on Instagram. Being lighter than DSLRs, cellphone cameras are simply better in most situations especially when it comes to casual photography. And unlike DSLRs, smartphones come with image- enhancing software. They also let you share your images on social media instantly. Given that the tool you use often determines your mindset towards what you do, smartphone photography can potentially encourage you to take photos without thinking. You should rein yourself in with the thought that photography is a thinking game. Do not expect cellphone cameras to compete with DSLRs (yet) in terms of image quality, great low-light photos and faithful colour reproduction. Keeping these considerations in mind, here's how to improve your mobile photography game.
  • 87. GoAir.in OCTOBER 2018 85 TAKE CONTROL: Go beyond automatic mode. Chances are that your cellphone camera has a 'Pro' mode; learn to tweak its basic settings such as ISO and white balance. READ THE LIGHT: Photography is all about the play of light, and the absence of it. So, experiment with manual exposure settings. Your screen will display an exposure scale or dial; change its settings up and down until FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS: You need not accept the smartphone’s autofocus setting. Touch to focus on the object which has to be in sharp detail. GRIDLINES AND GUIDELINES: Your camera may have the ‘gridlines’ setting—usually something called the rule of thirds gridlines. If you turn this on, you will see the screen divided into a grid pattern. This will help you compose your photo in a better way. Use gridlines and you'll see a great jump in the composition of your images. FRAMING YOUR PHOTO: Avoid the tendency to take only vertical images since that’s how we normally hold a smart phone. As a thumb rule, photos of landscapes come out better in a horizontal framing; portraits are better taken in the vertical mode. There are, of course, exceptions. CHOOSE YOUR TOOL: Choose a phone with better optical qualities than software enhancements, and remember that the lens is what matters. ZOOMING IN: Try not to ‘zoom in’ by using your phone. It is possible and advisable to walk closer to your subject. Zooming, in most cases, creates distortion in the image. BEGONE, BLUR: Hold your phone steady while shooting; this will give you a sharper image, especially in low light. Use burst mode to capture the right moment. EDITING SOFTWARE: There are plenty of editing apps out there, but do not overdo editing, especially well-shot image can be a head turner. TRY, TRY AGAIN: Patience matters. Didn’t get a good shot? Try again, from different angles and with different exposures, light conditions and framing. ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶

THE GODDESS COMES HOME HOLY ORIGINS The tiny neighbourhood of Kumartuli in North Kolkata, with its name quite literally meaning “potters’ locality” is where it all begins. Months before the Pujo (that’s the authentic Bengali pronunciation for Puja), potters begin shaping idols of various styles and sizes. A walk around this maze of dimly-lit alleys is like a surreal plunge into an otherworldly behind-the-scenes divine line of idols — some painted, some chance to catch all the effort that goes into making these stunning hand-crafted Durga idols, be sure to closely observe the auspicious moment of the eyes being drawn. The farewell happens in the midst of a heart-warming sense of fraternity as women donned in traditional white and red attire — lal paar shada sari — smear each other with strikingly red sindoor. In the evening, all the idols, big and small alike, make their way to the banks of the Hooghly River. Join a procession and immerse yourself in the beats of the dhaak, the madness of taasha and the honking of conch shells. Many immersions take place at Babu Ghat, where an excellent option of viewing the rituals is by hiring a boat and catching the action from the river itself. • 96. Fashion 94 OCTOBER 2018 GoAir.in Who says you can only sport a saree or a kurta in the festive season? “A major trend this time round is dhoti sarees. They are cool, comfortable and versatile. Wear them with an existing crop top or shirt or even a sexy saree blouse,” says designer Pria Kataaria Puri. You can even pair the dhoti with a jacket of the same fabric. And the trend is not limited to women alone. A properly draped dhoti paired with an elegant kurta or sherwani is the coolest trend for men this season. A minimally-embellished shawl over a sherwani speaks of pure masculine poise that should be on display this festive season. Men can also wear their embroidered sherwanis with jeans. Neutralise the bling by pairing a heavy sherwani with jeans with bare ankles. Don’t just give up on last season's salwar kameez and kurtis in your wardrobe. Instead of wearing them the usual way with churidars and salwars, team them up with palazzos or cigarette pants for a different look. Any kurti or blouse paired with these pants will create in interesting stones on it to instantly transform it to a dressy one. Don’t reserve those crop tops just for your Saturday nights. Pair them with a lehenga and wear a scarf instead of a dupatta for a youthful look. Instead of your solid silk kurta, or leggings, opt for a heavy skirt instead. Men who want to stand out from the herd of sherwani- and kurta- wearers can pair these items of clothing with jodhpuris and tan brogues. A NEW ETHNIC LOOK Mr. Ashok T Kanawala, Vice President - Products & Business Development, HDFC Asset Management Co. Ltd. KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH SIPs MUTUAL FUND INVESTMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO MARKET RISKS, READ ALL SCHEME RELATED DOCUMENTS CAREFULLY It’s a universal truth that stock markets are dynamic and nonlinear. Unfortunately, most investors get carried away by bullish market sentiments and expect investment journey to be a smooth joy ride. Outcome – disillusioned investors giving up on the idea of long term investment too soon and exiting investments at the wrong time. Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) offered by fund houses are meant to be a solution to this market timing conundrum faced by investors. Volatility in the market makes it imperative to address few common doubts about SIPs. Is SIP really a good strategy vs lumpsum investment? SIP is not a financial instrument but a simplified way of disciplined investing. In a consistently rising market, lumpsum investments would certainly outperform SIPs, as the cost of your investment would progressively increase with every SIP installment. However, it is a well-known fact that markets do not rise consistently and do witness multiple ups and downs over time. In such volatile markets, SIPs perform relatively better than lumpsum investments due to rupee cost averaging by buying more units at lower prices and vice versa. What is an Ideal time horizon for SIP investments? An SIP in equity scheme should be for tenure of at least 3-5 years to make the most of rupee cost averaging and mitigate risk of market timing. When you invest through SIP over 3-5 years, likelihood of loss reduces significantly. As your investment horizon increases to 3-5 years, divergence between maximum and minimum possible returns reduces, thereby reducing the volatility of returns on your investment. I started an SIP in a small cap fund at the beginning of the year. However, over the past 6 months the fund has yielded negative/low returns. Should I discontinue the SIP? It’s true that small cap and mid cap segments which had a good year in 2017, have undergone some correction in 2018. However, it is important to continue SIPs during market downturns as investors can accumulate more number of units with the same SIP installment, thereby reducing the average cost per unit of investment. This indeed is the essence of SIPs where investor accumulates more units at a lower NAV and vice versa. Contrary to public perception, market corrections are in fact a good time to start &/or continue an SIP. Considering the volatility in markets and fears of correction, should I stop my SIP for few months and restart it later? Market timing is fraught with risk. Unanticipated changes in market can make the risk of misjudgment significant. The beauty of SIPs lies in negating market timing risk and benefiting from market volatility through disciplined investing and rupee cost averaging. Attempting to time your SIPs by trying to identify perfect investing environment defeats the purpose of SIPs. “The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author alone and not of HDFC AMC, and should not be regarded as investment advice. Investors should obtain their own independent advice before taking a decision to invest in any securities. Returns are not assured / guaranteed.” K
