Leadership is inextricably connected to the collaborative
process. Leadership relies upon relationships between and
among people to achieve organizational goals. While
collaboration or teamwork can lead to better solutions and
creative ideas, collaboration can also lead to conflict,
groupthink, and indecision. If leaders want to avoid such
negatives in teamwork, leaders must exercise patience, good
communication skills, and trust when trying to create a
successful collaborative environment. To build such trust and to
have a truly functioning team, leaders must often take risks and
encourage team members to take risks – to think outside the
box, to challenge the status quo, to encourage change.
In this forum, we will examine team dynamics and the
challenges of working in a team. Consider a situation in an
organization where you are or were part of a team. This
organization can be your workplace or any organization where
you are a member.
Describe the organization. Identify the stakeholders and the
leaders in this organization.
Describe your role in this organization.
Describe the function and goals of the team in this organization.
What is one challenge or obstacle that this team faced? (Please
feel free to describe more than one challenge or obstacle.) What
processes were established to overcome these obstacles? Were
these processes successful? Why or why not?
Does your leader take risks? Give one example of how your
leader took a risk or perhaps did not. What were the outcomes?
Do you consider yourself a risk taker in your organization? Why
or why not? How can you build upon your strengths to better
handle challenges and take risks?

Please write in complete sentences. You should work on this
assignment as you go through the assigned readings and
chapters in your textbook. Avoid copying directly from the text.
Your responses should be in your own words.

1. Based on the information you have learned in this unit,
identify two ways we might encourage others to take initiative
and show a “can do” attitude.
2. Explain what is meant by the expression “What is rewarding
gets done.” Provide an example to support your response.
3. Explain what is meant by “outsight.” Why is it important for
leaders to be aware of outsight?
4. What is meant by internal and external communication?
Using your own personal or professional experiences, give one
example of each.
5. Identify three actions leaders might take to search for new
ideas and opportunities.

6. Describe the concept of “small wins.”
7. Describe how allowing small wins produces results.
8. What is meant by the phrase “psychological hardiness?”
Explain the three factors involved in such hardiness.
9. Explain what is meant by the statement “Success does not
breed success. It breeds failure. It is failure which breeds
success.”
The Leadership Challenge Workbook
10. We often hear the words, “We can’t do that because” when
we want to try something new or innovative. On page 80 of
your workbook, you will see a list of phrases that we might hear
used as reasons for not trying something new. Select one
phrase that you have either heard or used in a situation at work,
school or home. Explain how and why this statement was used
and describe how you might overcome this objection.

To build such trust and to have a truly functioning team, leaders must often take risks and encourage team members to take risks – to think outside the box, to challenge the status quo, to encourage change. In this forum, we will examine team dynamics and the challenges of working in a team. Consider a situation in an organization where you are or were part of a team. This organization can be your workplace or any organization where you are a member. Describe the organization. Identify the stakeholders and the leaders in this organization. Describe your role in this organization. Describe the function and goals of the team in this organization. What is one challenge or obstacle that this team faced?
