British colonialism ended in Sudan in 1956 and from that point on there would be significant
conflict within the state, one of the main causes was because of differences in religious beliefs. The
North, and most of the state were predominantly Muslim while the South was Christian and a mix of
other religions. After a long civil war, which ended in 2005, Sudan was divided and the new state of
South Sudan was created in 2011; it is the UN's newest member. This was deemed a major
accomplishment; not only were the South Sudanese celebrating but the Americans and the UN were
as well since it was believed that this would finally bring peace.
Salva Kiir was one of the actors working hard fighting for this newly acquired independence, and
once independence was achieved he became the president of the new government, which was being

the largest majority of the state. Kiir appointed Riek Machar, who comes from the Nuer ethnic
group, as Vice President, so as to give representation to the second largest ethnic group of South

The Second Sudanese Civil War was a conflict from 1983 to 2005 between the central Sudanese
government and the Sudan People 's Liberation Army. It was largely a continuation of the First
Sudanese Civil War of 1955 to 1972. Although it originated in southern Sudan, the civil war spread
to the Nuba mountains and Blue Nile. It lasted for 22 years and is one of the longest civil wars on
record. The war resulted in the independence of South Sudan six years after the war ended.
Roughly two million people died as a result of war, famine and disease caused by the conflict. Four
million people in southern Sudan were displaced at least once (and normally repeatedly) during the
war. The civilian death toll is one of the highest of any war since World War II[5] and was marked
by a large number of human rights violations. These include slavery and mass killings. The conflict
