Activity Title: Adverb or Preposition?
Objective: To identify the word as an adverb or preposition.
Remember that prepositions always have objects. Adverbs do not.
Preposition relates the noun or pronoun that appears with it to another word in the sentence.
Adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
PREPOSITIONS ADVERBS
The smoke drifted up the chimney. The dark, ugly smoke drifted up.
Flowers grew along the path. Won’t you come along?
The park is near the house. We knew help was near.
LET’S PRACTICE! Identify each underlined word as preposition or adverb.
Ex.) I took the jar under the cabinet.
Preposition
1. He sent her a bouquet of flowers.
2. Please, keep of the grass.
3. Kaye is living nearby.
4. This is a secret between you and me.
5. The cafeteria is reserved for us.
TASK 1: Identify each underlined word as preposition or adverb. Write your answer after each sentence.
1. Instead of apples, we had guavas.
2. Keshia has a traumatic experience before.
3. Because of the water shortage, we will be careful.
4. Wonder Woman jumped in the balcony.
5. The examination is over.
TASK 2: IDENTIFYING BETWEEN ADVERBS AND PREPOSITIONS: Identify each underlined word as
preposition or adverb. Write your answer after each sentence.
Ex.) The spider sat down beside her.

1. We searched around carefully for the lost money.
2. Beneath our house is the cellar of an old cabin.
3. The balloon floated up, rising higher and higher.
4. She put her work aside and talked with me.
5. Walk right in if you don’t find us at home.
6. On account of lateness, you have fallen behind.
7. The snail crept along the bottom of the fish tank.
8. No one can make that horse go over a bridge.
9. The snoring told him someone slept within.
10. Hang on and don’t let go.
