2. One of the most commonly used infertility medications,
Menopur is a highly purified combination of human
follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone,
both of which are responsible for inducing the growth of
follicle that produce eggs. It is classified as menotropins
injectable hormones that control reproductive function
and has gone through additional steps for purification.
3. The purification process results into less discomfort and
fewer injection site reactions for the patient. Menopur is
indicated for the development of multiple follicles and
pregnancy in ovulatory patients participating in ART
program.
4. How is it supplied?
Menopur is available in a vial as sterile powder, with
accompanying sterile diluent. The physician may
recommend using a particular amount of diluent to
dissolve one or more vials of the medication. It is
approved for SC injection only during IVF procedure. With
SC administration, the patient can self-inject the drug
under the skin using smaller needles than those used for
IM injection.
5. Safety precautions
Menopur should be recommended only by physicians who
have adequate monitoring facilities and are familiar with
infertility treatment. A reproductive endocrinologist who
has thorough knowledge of fertility conditions should be
managing your care to make sure the best results.
6. Menopur is not recommended for women who have high
FSH level indicating primary ovarian failure, prior
hypersensitivity to menotropins, a pituitary tumor,
uncontrolled thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, and
ovarian cysts or enlargement. Furthermore, it is
contradicted in women who are pregnant. The women
whose cause of infertility is other than anovulation must
not use Menopur.
7. Common side effects
Some common side effects of Menopur are abdominal
pain, headache, ovarian disease, nausea, abdominal
cramping and enlarged abdomen. A less common but
serious side-effect is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
that occurs in approx. 3.8 percent of patients who use
Menopur.
8. Storing Menopur
The infertility medication in powder form can be stored
in refrigerator or at room temperature. It should be
protected from light, so it is a best idea to store the drug
in a box. Once Menopur has been dissolved, it should be
used immediately and any unused drug should be safely
discarded.
