1. The Mexican Fisherman

2. An American tourist was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked.

3. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The tourist complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

4. The Mexican replied, "Only a little while."

5. The tourist then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"

6. The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs."

7. The tourist then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

8. The Mexican fisherman said, - "I sleep late, fish a little,

9. … play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I drink somethings and play guitar with my amigos.

10. “ I have a full and busy life."

11. The American Tourist scoffed, - “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you!

12. You should spend more time fishing;

13. … and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: ”

14. “ With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. ”

15. “ Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats !”

16. “ Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. ”

17. “ You would control the product, processing and distribution. ”

18. “ You could leave this small coastal fishing village …

19. … and move to Mexico City,

20. … then Los Angeles,

21. and eventually New York where you could run your ever-expanding enterprise."

22. The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"

23. The tourist replied, "15 to 20 years." "But what then?" asked the Mexican.

24. The tourist laughed and said, "That's the best part.

25. When the time is right you would sell your company stock to the public and become very rich."

26. “ You would make millions !”

28. The American said,

29. - “ Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife,…

30. “ … stroll to the village in the evenings where you could drink somethings and play your guitar with your amigos .”

31. I n S h o r t : One man is great as his ideal. The highest ideal is hereafter. Greed destroys sincerity and damages actions in regard to the Hereafter.

32. Excess and wastefulness lead to lack of contentment.

33. And lack of contentment destroys enthusiasm for work; it causes laziness, opens the door to complaining about life, and makes the dissatisfied person complain continuously.

34. As for frugality and economy, these result in contentment. According to the Hadith, “ The contented person is respected, and the greedy person despised ,” a consequence of contentment is self-esteem .
