I am Thomas Hobbes
The beginning...



❖   April 5, 1588

❖   Westport, Wiltshire, England

❖   College education at Oxford University in England
Leviathan


❖   Written in 1651

❖   About his views on human nature

❖   Citizens would live under social contract
My Political Philosophy

❖   believe in absolute sovereignty

❖   stated that legitimate political power must be
    "representative" and based on the consent of the people

❖   believe that the sovereign must control civil, military and
    judicial powers.
The Natural Condition of
              Man
❖   Argue that all humans by nature are equal

❖   This causes everyone naturally willing to fight

❖   This leads to war

❖   Later leads to “natural right” which is when you have the
    right to do anything that you think is necessary to preserve
    your own life.

❖   Described in his book De Cive
The end...


❖   In October of 1679 I suffered from a terrible bladder
    disorder

❖   I then died on December 4th the same year.

❖   My lasts words were “A great leap in the dark.”
