• The word, ‘tradition’ literally means ‘to
handover’ or ‘to give for safekeeping’.
• Authentic Yoga Tradition means, beliefs,
customs, practices, knowledge of self,
universe, rituals evolved, practiced and
guided in the past, transmitted and
transferred through time from one
generation to the next generation.
• Verbal (oral) – Master-disciple tradition –
Guru Kula education

• Lineage--Many other words used for lineage
are ancestry, descent, family tree.
• The word, ‘lineage’ derived from the Latin
word, ‘linea’ meaning ‘a line’.
• A line consists of millions of ‘dots’. One ‘dot’
joins the other ‘dot’.
• When knowledge is passed ‘as it is’ or in its
purest form from one master to other
disciple, who becomes master to another
disciple. It becomes lineage in Authentic Yoga
Tradition.

• Tradition and lineage were independent from
ancestry
• Lineage in Authentic Yoga Tradition is either
from parents to his children or from masters
to his chosen disciples.
• Lineage and tradition are same with few exceptions.
It takes a few hundred years for establishing the
tradition. The oldest text, Rigveda was written
around 3500 BC. It means the knowledge found in
this text, should have taken a few hundred years,
before it was scribed
