COERCIVE POWER
REWARD POWER
LEGITIMATE POWER
EXPERT POWER
REFERENT POWER
INFORMATION POWER
Providing background information to
support a decision or a request leads to
understanding and acceptance, and
eventually to cognitive change.
Information power leads to socially
*independent* change in the target's belief,
attitude, or behavior!
Reward power stems from the ability of
the influencing person to offer a positive
incentive for the target to comply. It's
socially *dependent* for the same
reason Coercive power is.
Coercive power brings about change by
threatening a target who does not comply
with undesirable consequences. It's socially
*dependent* since the target relates
compliance to the actions of the influencing
person.
Both need
constant
surveillance
to be effective
Legitimate power stems from the
target's accepting the right of the agent
to require the change in behavior. It's
socially *dependent*, but does not
require surveillance.
Expert power results from the target's
faith that the agent has some superior
insight or knowledge about what is best.
It's socially *dependent* and does not
require surveillance.
Referent power stems from the
identification of a target with the
influencing person. It's socially
*dependent* and does not require
surveillance.
