hmv was founded in London, England in 1921.
His Master's Voice (HMV) is a trademark in the
music business. The name was founded in 1899
and it was a title of a painting of the dog Nipper
listening to a wind-up gramophone.
In the old hmv logo the dog was listening to a
phonograph cylinder. It was based on the painting.
And the name his master’s voice also came from
the painting.
