Lesson: Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Day 1
Standard: SSCG6 The student will demonstrate knowledge of civil liberties and civil rights.
a. Examine the Bill of Rights with emphasis on First Amendment freedoms.
Essential Questions: What freedoms are guaranteed by the First Amendment? What other rights
are guaranteed by the Bill of Rights?
Activating Strategy: Students will list what they think the first amendment guarantees.
Technology Option: For those students with a mobile device, they will be able to text in answers
using Poll Everywhere. For those with no technology available we will list the guarantees on the
board.
Activities: 1. Students will take notes for the first 10 minutes of class. This is done to provide
background knowledge.
Technology Option: VoiceThread will allow students (who have a mobile device)to comment on
the lecture and the comments will be incorporated into the presentation. This app is on the cloud
and is accessible by any mobile device.
2. Students will be given ‘real life scenario’ role cards and situations and will have to determine
if a right is being violated, and if so, which amendment guarantees that right.
Technology Option: Flip Camera/iPad will be provided to students. Collaborative groups will be
randomly selected. Students will tape themselves acting out the amendment. It will then be
shown to the class and the class, using Poll Everywhere, will select the amendment they think
applies to the scenario.
Closing: Students will identify and summarize key terms and ideas from each day’s lesson.
Individual whiteboards and markers will be provided for students.
Technology Option: Students with mobile devices will be able to make their device an
interactive white board using SyncPad. Students may work with a shoulder partner to complete
the summary of the lesson.
Assessment: Students will answer the essential questions.
Technology Option: iPads will be provided for those students who do not have a mobile device.
Students answer the essential questions using Socrative.com.
