Stakeholders launch
1.
2. A is a person (or a group
of people) that has a reasonable interest
or involvement in a particular project,
event, activity or situation
3. Each stakeholder has an
individual and unique stance or
PERSPECT IVE on the topic of interest
It’s their opinion or point of view
They approach the situation from different
angles depending on their circumstances
and values
4. An ISSUE may occur when there are
conflicting perspectives between
stakeholders
That is, when interest
groups have opinions that clash with others
Disputes or disagreements can result
5. During our next unit of work we will:
Analyse a few different situations
Identify the stakeholders involved
Examine the stakeholders’
perspectives
Gain a greater understanding of the
issues
Our first investigation arises from an article that
one of the Year 8 advisers saw recently in the
local newspaper. . .
8. Nuclear Development for Loreto Bush
ANNOUNCED at last night’s
Hornsby Council meeting was the
development of a new nuclear
reactor to be built at the Loreto
Bush site in Normanhurst.
The development, to be built by
Uranimex Pty Ltd, will see the
clearing of bush land to build a
state-of-the-art nuclear power plant
that will provide jobs for 500
workers and generate enough
electricity for the entire city of
Sydney.
Various stakeholders spoke at the
council meeting. This is what they
said:
“We are very excited about the new
development,” said Mr Mike
Moneybags, President of Uranimex.
“Total chaos – more traffic, more
noise and more pollution for the
local residents of Normanhurst,”
pronounced Mrs Gail Grumpy of
the Local Residents Action Group.
“The development will be a huge
boost for Australia’s economic
development and future and will
reduce our country’s carbon
emissions by 87%,” stated Mrs Sally
Slipup, Federal Minister of Energy.
“This is a bad decision!
Our environment is too
important and needs to be
protected,” said
Mr Tom Treehugger, Normanhurst
Environmental Conservation
Group.
9. Nuclear power plants produce electricity using a fuel
called uranium
Australia is one of the few developed countries not
using nuclear power BUT our country contains almost
half of the world's known uranium reserves
Our modern lifestyles are highly dependant on a
having a constant supply of electricity
10. Nuclear power is controversial because the Uranium fuel
and its waste products are radioactive
Radioactivity can be deadly, spreads over large distance
and remains toxic for thousands of years
Serious accidents (‘melt-downs’) have occurred at
nuclear power stations in the past
There is a constant concern for people living near
nuclear power stations about nuclear accidents and
radiation leaks
11. Nuclear power plants produce electricity without burning
fossil fuels
This could be essential for protecting the environment and
preventing global warming and climate change
Nuclear power production is very efficient, producing
enormous amounts of electricity from very small
amounts of Uranium
32 countries already use nuclear power! In France, 90%
of their electricity is produced by nuclear reactors
There are over 400 nuclear reactors around the world
13. Based on the information about the development of the
Loreto Bush, construct a summary of the different
‘perspectives’ of the following stakeholders:
Mr Mike Moneybags President Uranimex Pty Ltd
Mrs Gail Grumpy Local Residents Action Group
Mrs Sally Slipup Minister for Energy
Mr Tom Treehugger Environmental Conservation Group
14. Over the next week we will be looking at various pieces
in Popular Culture, such as songs and TV shows, that
have a message about our role as citizens in the
community.
Editor's Notes
Relationships between members of communities
What does it mean to be an active citizen? What kinds of things might occur to make us more active and involved?
MUSIC FESTIVAL… school community, ICT task & using technology to connect people
Does everyone always agree?? Why or why not?
