Note: This is my final version of this project. We had to create a powerpoint based on one of the themes in the novel.

Tkamb Project

 1. 1. Religious Discrimination Robert Summers Per. 1
 2. 2. Introduction

Religious Discrimination

Acts or feelings against a person, group, etc. based on religion.

I mostly chose this topic since it is very prevalent in today’s society. I hope that you, the viewer, and I will be able to learn more about religious discrimination itself and possibly learn what the future is for it through the past.

 3. 3. Armenian Genocide (1915-1917)

An old lady and child are hand in

hand as they look down upon a

barely clothed, emaciated boy.

The Armenian genocide resulted from the Armenian’s mostly Christian population conflicting with the Ottoman Empire’s religious beliefs on both a moral and political level; at that time, Armenia and its citizens were controlled and found in all parts of the Muslim-set Ottoman Empire. The methods used were deportation, long marches, which weakened the Armenians, Christians, and ethnic groups such as Greeks that were persecuted by the Ottoman Empire; finally, the Ottoman Empire implemented extermination of their persecuted.

The First and the Forgotten Modern Genocide
 4. 4. A mass of dead bodies is laid out here consisting of Armenian men, women, children; in the upper portion, a dead mother can be seen holding her dead child in her arms.

Overall, 1.5 million died from 1915-1917, including the deaths that followed shortly after; it was not until sanctions by Allied governments after WWI that this was finally resolved, but even now, Turkey, once the main power base of the Ottoman Empire, denies any involvement in the genocide. It was now during the Obama administration in the U.S. that the U.S. government considered this a historical genocide

 5. 5. The senseless Armenian genocide would go on to inspire genocides similar to it, including the Holocaust, by which Hitler referenced his actions from this moment in history. It was the first genocide of the modern era, caused by an illogical and prejudiced feud between religious beliefs which by itself would repeat even during modern day. Severed heads of Armenians are stacked into a pile.
 6. 6. The Holocaust (1933-1945)

A Jew is about to be shot in the head like the others below in the hole by a German soldier with a pistol in front of a crowd.

Delusional due to Germany’s loss, Adolf Hitler, chancellor of Germany, instituted measures against Jews in Germany, such as terror campaigns, deportations, concentration camps, thinking and relaying to the German public that Jews were the cause of Germany’s problems following WWI. Before the Holocaust, anti-Semiticism in Germany existed since the 1300s.

 7. 7. ALL JEWS OR JUDAISTS WERE STRIPPED OF LEGAL AND CIVIL RIGHTS IN GERMANY AND GERMAN-OCCUPIED AREAS. THEY THEN WERE SENT TO CONCENTRATION CAMPS, EXECUTION, OR BOTH, THE MOST FAMOUS CONCENTRATION CAMP BEING AUSCHWITZ.

A Jewish father along with his daughter are in front of a firing squad

 8. 8. 6-11 million people died, and the circle of religious hate continued on. It ended when Hitler committed suicide and the Allies won WWII.

A crowd of Jews in a concentration camp stand in front of two German advisors with dead bodies of Jews right behind them.

 9. 9. Today… …

Religious discrimination is found everywhere around the world, like the past has.

Shi’ite and Sunni Sectarianism in Islam

Islam has been separated into Shiite and Sunni sects for over 1300 years over the spiritual successor to Mohammed, their holy prophet, and the tensions between them have escalated during the modern era.

Shiite boys flagellate themselves with swords to commemorate the martyrdom of Hussein, finalizing the schism of Shiites and Sunnis .
 10. 10.

A Sunni boy bleeds from his head following foolish sectarian violence and religious hatred.

 11. 11. Northern Ireland

A pair of children in Northern Ireland play in the boundaries of a community wall; due to the violence in the region, communities had to be walled up for people’s safety; since then, military intervention has been approved by the government.

In Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, there is a conflict between Catholics and Protestants that has torn the region apart since the 1980s. Even before then, hate between Catholics and Protestants had existed far beyond Northern Ireland into most of Europe during the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s to 1600s.

 12. 12.

An UK soldier with a firearm is stationed next to a building in Northern Ireland to keep civil order.

 13. 13. More Currently

A police officer is on scene after a Sikh priest visiting in Vienna is killed by a rival sect.

Will the religious hate continue like the past has?
 14. 14. Conclusion

All I can say is that working on this project opened up my eyes when it came to seeing how much religious discrimination exists in today’s world. I also realized that humanity, at this extent, shall renew this form of hate throughout the future to come.
