2. Why Should Technology be
Integrated into Our Curriculum?
Our job as educators is to prepare our
students to become productive and
successful members of society. We need to
provide students with mental flexibility,
experiences, and practical applications in
order for each student to adjust and adapt
to the technological changes that are
constantly taking place.
3. Time might move at a constant
rate, but technology is moving
exponentially.
4. What Should 21st Century Technology
Look Like in Our Schools?
Another way to ask this question is, “What Do 21st
Century Learning Goals Look Like in Our Schools?”
21st Century Goals include:
Communication Skills,
Collaboration Skills,
Creativity,
Critical Thinking Skills.
Whether we’re talking about 21st century
learning in elementary school, middle school, or high
school the goals are basically the same. What
changes when we move from Kindergarten-12th
grade is how these goals are implemented.
5. Developing
Communication
Skills
The following are a few of the audio and visual tools that can be used to develop and
improve communication skills throughout the grades:
Audacity: a free audio editor for recording, slicing, and mixing sounds. It is available
on both Windows and Mac platforms.
Adobe Premiere: a video editing software that is part of Adobe Creative Suite. It is
available on both Windows and Mac platforms.
Adobe Flash: a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity
to web pages.
iMovie: a proprietary video editing software application sold by Apple Inc. for the
Mac.
GarageBand: a software for OS X or iOS that is used to create music or podcasts.
Jing: a free screenshot or screencast software from TechSmith that allow its user to
capture anything you see on your computer screen, as an image or short video, and
lets you share it instantly.
Microsoft PowerPoint: a software used to create presentations and slides.
6. Collaboration
Skills
Team building is an essential skills each student will need
when they enter to work force.
Skype and Adobe Connect are two video-conferencing
services that allow students and teachers to meet and work
together from alternative sites allowing synchronized sessions
to take place.
Dropbox and Google docs are file-sharing sites that give
students and teachers the ability to work together on a
document or project at the same time for two separate
computers.
Chat rooms can be set-up as a meeting place for students
to talk to each other or their teacher, work through
homework problems, share documents and plan projects
together.
7. Creativity
All students can find their creative side
when with the use of the following tools:
Category Tool Name
Text Tagxedo
Video Jing or Screenr
Images Skitch or Flickr
Presentations Photo Story or Prezi
Diagrams Bubbl.us, Gliffy, or skrbl
8. Critical Thinking
Skills
Thinking about a Problem > Evaluating the Information > Drawing
Conclusions
In order to develop critical thinking skills students need to be:
*motivated,
*guided,
*provided scaffolding,
*given feedback.
Computers can’t take to place of teachers, but they can be
provided with software that can help teachers differentiate
instruction so that students at all levels can learn to practice their
critical thinking skills.
Some programs used today are:
*Accelerated Reader,
*Achieve3000,
*Brain Pop,
*E.nopi.
