A MARI USQUE AD MARE
"A Mari usque
ad Mare"
• This is Canada's official
motto.
• Do you know what it
means?
A Mari Usque ad Mare means...
From Sea to Sea
• As you can see, Canada is
a large country, with
coasts on the Atlantic,
Pacific, and Arctic
oceans.
• In fact, Canada is the
second largest country in
the world, after Russia.
Overview
Today we're going to learn about 3 aspects of
Canada:
• Nature & Wildlife
• Education
• Politics
Canadian Nature
WHICH OF THESE PHOTOS DO YOU THINK WAS
TAKEN IN CANADA?
A
B
C
The answer is.. C!
This photo is of Lake
Ontario, one of the Great
Lakes of North America
This photo was
taken in Granada.
And this photo was taken
in Mairena (Porzuna Park).
Land of Many Colours
• Since Canada is so large, its natural
environments and wildlife vary a lot.
• Another thing that contributes to
the diversity of Canadian nature is the fact
that Canada has four seasons which vary a
lot in temperature and precipitation.
• These are some photos of different places in
Canada in winter, spring, summer and fall.
Niagara Falls
• Located near Toronto on the border
between Canada and the United
States
• The Canadian falls is the most
powerful waterfall in North
America, as measured by the flow
rate.
• Many daredevils have attempted to
go over the falls in barrels, some
surviving, and others dying
Canadian
Wildlife
• Can you guess
what Canada's
national animal is?
Is it the beaver?
Is it the polar bear?
Is it the moose?
Is it the Canadian
goose?
Canada's national animal is.. The Beaver!
- Beavers have large front teeth, which help
them chop down trees.
-They use wood to build dams in rivers,
which stop water and are an important part
of ecosystems.
Beaver tails
• - Canadians have a special sweet
pastry, which has this name
because it resembles the tail of their
national animal.
• - It can be covered with various
different toppings and enjoyed
warm.
• - You can think of the beaver tail
as the Canadian version of a
churro.
Education in
Canada
Primary /
Secondary
School
• Canada's education system is
rather similar to Spain's in terms of
primary and secondary school.
• In Ontario, (the most populous
province) five years of French as
a Second Language class is
mandatory.
A Canadian high school
A Canadian elementary school
High School
Course
Selection
• One great thing about
Canadian high schools, is
the amount of selection
that students have to
prepare them for different
fields of work, or life in
general.
• The following slides show
some of the courses
available at Holy Cross
Secondary School, in
Peterborough, Ontario.
Cosmetology
program
• Students learn how to do hair and
makeup in a professional setting.
They often work with the drama
department to help with plays and
musicals.
Aviation program
Students work with the
local airport to prepare
them for jobs in the aircraft
industry
Hospitality &
Tourism
• Students learn about
various aspects of cooking,
baking, event planning, and
tourism. They often host
events to test their skills with
real people from the
community.
The future for
Canadian high
schools
• These are just some of the great
and diverse programs offered at
Canadian high schools.
• Unfortunately, The government of
Ontario has made several cuts to
education, meaning that specialized
programs will be cut, and class sizes
will grow, making it harder for
students to learn.
Post-Secondary Education
• While post-secondary education is not
quite as expensive as their
neighbouring country (the United
States), tuition in Canada is quite
costly.
• Government scholarships are
available, but they rarely cover all of
students' expenses, and the average
student graduates with about $17,000
CAD (€11,150) worth of debt,
depending on various factors.
Canadian Politics
Which of these is Canada's head of State?
Justin Trudeau
Donald TrumpJulie Payette
Stephen Harper
Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II
• Technically Canada is a
constitutional monarchy,
meaning that the Queen has the
power to govern the country.
• However, the power is entrusted
in the Canadian government to
create laws and legislation. The
queen is mostly a symbolic
reminder of the colonial history of
Canada.
• Do you know who the Prime
Minister of Canada is? (they were
on previous slide)
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
• The prime minister of Canada is Justin Trudeau, leader of
the Liberal party. However, the Liberal party has a minority
government, meaning they have to work with the other
political parties to pass laws.
• This is similar to the way Pedro
Sanchez must work with other
parties to pass laws here in
Spain.
Canada – Spain Relations
• Canada and Spain have many
relations with trade, travel, education
and culture.
• There are several programs that
allow high school students to
participate in student exchange
programs.
• The countries have also established
the Youth Mobility Agreement, which
gives young Spaniards and Canadians
the opportunity to work and study in
Canada and Spain respectively.
• Would you like to go to Canada one
day?
