1. Music Video Director
Robby Starbuck
Robby Starbuck is an American Music video director from Los Angeles, California. Starbuck has
worked with famous artists such as Snoop Dogg, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, The Sounds,
Yellowcard, Machine Gun Kelly, Escape The Fate, Smashing Pumpkins, Metric, Times of Grace,
Jeffree Star, Jon Mclaughlin, and Asking Alexandria who the majority follow a ‘rock/punk’ genre.
In most of the videos Starbuck has directed there are many shots of the band playing their
instruments and singing this effect is used to make it seem as the band are performing live and this
is a conventional aspect of rock video
2. .
Starbucks visual style is he uses a lot of extreme close ups of the front man of the band to show
facial expressions and to tell a story. Also along with the bass beat of the music he shakes the
camera to appeal to the rock fans. The temp of shots varies between videos, it can be extreme slow
motion in some to highlight a certain scene or when the music slows down and then the tempo of
the shot is also sped up which then creates a fast forward effect.
The weather also plays a vital part in the majority of Starbucks videos, and in many rock videos. The
weather is usually identical to the mood of the song and lyrics. For example if the song is about a
breakup and it has an angry feel to the song, then there would be rain and thunder. In other music
videos with major keyed songs, there is a lot of brightness and saturation used in the effects.
