Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
exhibit hyperactivity, inattentiveness, or impulsivity. They usually
have trouble focusing on a task, sitting still, or controlling
emotions and behaviors. Mental and physical restlessness affect
kids with ADHD even while they are sleeping.
One recent study explains that children with ADHD showed a
higher rate of daytime drowsiness compared to those without
ADHD. Additionally, restless leg syndrome and periodic leg
movement syndrome are common among these children.
Approximately 25 to 50 percent of parents report that their
children with ADHD experience sleeping problems. These parents
find it inexplicably difficult to make their children settle down. If
there is an interruption of the child’s bedtime routine, bedtime
resistance and struggles increase. Children with ADHD who take
stimulant medications can also contribute to sleep disorders. For
older children or adults who have ADHD, there may co-morbidities
such as anxiety and depression which may lead to sleeping
difficulties.

Common specific sleep disorders for people with ADHD include
periodic limb movement disorder, restless leg syndrome, sleep

Parents should take their children to a physician if symptoms of
sleeping disorders are observed. The doctor will keep a thorough
sleep history, and further evaluation will be made depending on
the records. The management that the physician will be providing
will rely on the results of the assessments.
