A data packet is a message which is transmitted
over a packet switching network which is where
all the packets forming arrive, they are then
recompiled into the original message sent.

In packet-switched networks such as
the Internet, a router is a device or, in some
cases, software in a computer, that tells the
next network point to where a packet
should be forwarded toward its destination.
So a routers function is to tell the software
or network where to send a packet or
another piece of software.
