The nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney that filters wastes from the blood. Most filtration occurs in the glomerulus, a network of capillaries inside Bowman's capsule. Some of the filtered materials, like water, are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream while wastes pass through the collecting duct to become urine.
