Presentatie van Geraldo Vallen van stichting Join the Pipe tijdens de Masterclass Duurzame Ontwikkeling georganiseerd door Stichting Young and Fair 19-21 april 2013
Hallo we are Jointhepipe, the first community of tap water drinkers with the dream to redistribute drinkable water in a fairer way. So we want to build the symbolic longest waterpipe in the world. Long enough to bring water to those without.
So we believe in a world like this on, where everybody has access to clean drinking water. We’re a foundation started in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and we are asking everybody to join to build this very long waterpipe.
And when you need a refill you can get access to tap water on the streets, in parks, squares, shopping malls, airports, universities and other public spaces by the Join the Pipe tap water station. The tap water station also resembles a piece of the water pipe and with one push on the button you get tap water. The tap station off course works, besides the Join the Pipe bottle, in combination with every type of bottle, carafe, glass and even without a bottle. Already over 200 are placed all across the Netherlands. The tap station is developed with several Dutch water companies with the latest demands on sustainability, hygiene, accessibility, vandal-resistance and safety. The tap station can even stay outside during winter time and therefor hardly needs any maintenance. The tap station brings tap water back in the streets, giving people access to a sustainable and healthy drink.
This is a picture Join the Pipe took in The Gambia in February 2013. The Blue pump besides an nearly broken Indian hand pump. The Blue pump gives a lot more water and gives water right after you start pumping. It also much lighter to use.
And there happy with their sustainable blue pump insuring them of clean water every day.
Because during our trip in The Gambia, but also in Ghana en Tanzania we’ve still seen tap like this being places by NGO’s. These are not hygienic, nor are the vandal resistant. The result is that they are being stolen and sold or they break down easily.
That is way we also want to place our tap station in African cities in the outskirts, to provide clean water on the go on the streets, by placing the same high quality tap as we place in the Netherlands (but also already in Belgium, Singapore, Australia and Canada) in Africa.
We brought the first Join the Pipe tap station along ourselves to show on schools, sports fields, communities and cities.
The tap station is ideal for sports fields and can be placed nearby the players for a quick refreshment in a hygienic way.
The tap station is also perfect for schools, which often have a schoolyard, school garden en sports field besides them.
At the end of the trip we donated the tap together with the ministry of Youth and Sports in The Gambia to a community sports field in Serrekunda. Being the first Join the Pipe tap station in Africa.
This short movie is called ‘the story of the longest water pipe in the world’ and summons our initiative in 2 and a half minutes.
