Option B: TV/Documentary/Movie Option
Note: some of the content below may be triggering for some
viewers. Please be certain to review the summary of each option
before watching the content. If you select a television series,
you do not need to watch all episodes of the series. Instead,
watch enough content in order to be able to complete the
requirements for this assignment. The decision on how many
show episodes to watch is up to you.
Option B choices:
The Color Purple
- This movie is an epic tale spanning 40 years in the life of
Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), an African-American woman living
in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After
Celie's abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing
"Mister" Albert Johnson (Danny Glover), things go from bad to
worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can.
She perseveres, holding on to her dream of one day being
reunited with her sister in Africa. Based on the novel by Alice
Walker.
Abducted in Plain Sight
- This Netflix documentary chronicles the peculiar kidnapping
case of Jan Broberg
,
an Idaho teenager who was abducted by her decades-older
neighbor Robert Berchtold in the 1970s. But Berchtold—known
as “B”—did not just kidnap Broberg once; he entrapped Jan’s
religious parents in such a web of trust, shame, and complicity
that he managed to convince the family to drop the most serious
kidnapping charges against him, continue letting him spend
disturbing amounts of time with their young daughter, and—in
the most shocking twist of all—he eventually kidnapped her a
second time.
Precious
- This movie features a 16-year-old Claireece "Precious" Jones
(Gabourey Sidibe) who is pregnant by her own father for the
second time. Previous can neither read nor write and suffers
constant abuse at the hands of her vicious mother (Mo'Nique).
Precious instinctively sees a chance to turn her life around when
she is offered the opportunity to transfer to an alternative
school. Under the patient, firm guidance of her new teacher,
Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins the journey from
oppression to self-determination.
Step 2: In your paper, include the following items:
Family Treatment Paper
Summary paragraph
Description/Assessment of Family:
Following the framework you used for your first paper, for this
Family Assessment assignment, you will also provide an overall
description of the family that includes discussion of relevant
biopsychosocialspiritual + environmental factors, along with
key figures within the family.
Similar to your first paper, you will also include a genogram
and an ecomap, with a "legend' or 'key'. The genogram and
ecomap will be included as appendices. Appendix A will consist
of your genogram and Appendix B will consist of your ecomap.
Appendix A and Appendix B will be placed at the very end of
your paper, after the references.
Also, be certain to include discussion related to:
family communication pattern(s)/style(s); and
resiliency, diversity, stressors, risks, and protective factors.
In this section of your paper, indicate how you identified the
individual(s) to interview and the processes you used to gain
permission to conduct the interview for this assignment.
If you selected a television show or a documentary, you can
indicate this detail in your paper.
Refer to the template (scroll down to the bottom of this page -
under "Resources") for complete details on write up of this
section.
2. Identification of Presenting Issue(s):
In this section, indicate the perceived presenting issue( s) for the
family.
This component includes any current and/or long-term
situation(s) facing the family.
For the purpose of this assignment, it is ideal to identify at least
one (1) but no more than two (2) current and/or long-term
situation(s).
In presenting the family issue(s), also include the reason(s) that
these concerns/problems needs to be addressed for the family.
Also, reflect on an anticipated outcome (goal) should the
presenting issue(s) be addressed.
Refer to the template (scroll down to the bottom of this page -
under "Resources") for complete details on write up of this
section.
3. Treatment Model & Plan
Based upon the family assessment and presenting issue(s),
select a model to engage in the treatment planning process.
The model selected should:
1. highlight one (1) treatment approach outlined in this course;
2. be clearly rooted in theory; and
3. demonstrate rationale for use that clearly demonstrates the
appropriateness of the model based on the presenting issue(s)
and family dynamics.
Identification of the treatment model should include:
1. an overview of the model as you understand it;
2. who is well known in developing the model;
3. the
specific
aspects of the model
that make it ideal to utilize as a treatme nt approach with the
family
and
specific examples of how you would apply these approaches;
and
4. integration of additional literature that indicates how the
application of the model used would be applicable with the
family given the family’s structure and presenting issue(s).
Presentation of the model should also indicate any adaptations
that should be made to the treatment approach in view of the
unique nature of the family such as: (a) racial/ethnic identity;
(b) socioeconomic status; (c) religious/faith/spiritual identity;
(d) sexual orientation/gender identity/gender expression; (e)
military affiliation; (f) (dis)ability status, etc.
Adaptations should also be rooted in relevant literature that
suggests use of adaptations based on the unique factor(s)
indicated.
Note:
for this assignment, you are NOT expected to
implement
the treatment approach. Instead, you are to
identify and write about the best treatment approach (theoretical
model)
based on the information gathered through your assessment.
Refer to the template (scroll down to the bottom of this page -
under "Resources") for complete details on write up of this
section.
4. Assessment of the Intervention:
Finally, conclude your paper by reflecting on the perceived
efficacy/utility of the model you propose to use.
Note that efficacy should be based on your indication of the
family unit's ability to achieve the indicated goal(s) using the
treatment model you have identified. This component should
also be based on your understanding of the family and any
relevant literature to support your claims.
Also, include thoughts of your own awareness regarding what
limitations/barriers you may having in using such a model in the
future and how you plan to address those limitations.
Conclude with your thoughts/feelings about completing this
assignment.
Refer to the template (scroll down to the bottom of this page -
under "Resources") for complete details on write up of this
section.
Reminder: refer to the template provided in the "Resources"
section of this assignment page (scroll towards the bottom) for
additional details that can help you process the assignment
