Lauren Hardman took Psychology 1010 as a prerequisite for nursing school after struggling to register just weeks before classes started. The class proved to be demanding with weekly essays and group presentations, but engaged the students and allowed real-world application of the material. Though the textbook contained more material than could be covered, Hardman gained a greater respect for psychology as a field and those who study it. She looks forward to taking more psychology courses to further her understanding, despite not majoring in psychology.

Miraculously, three days before classes started, Professor Stone’s 1010 section had one availability. I took this class because it’s a prerequisite for most nursing schools in and outside of Utah. Aside from it being a prerequisite, I have always had a desire to gain a greater understanding in psychology. I had very little knowledge pertaining to the psychology field and was enthused about participating in this course.
Just a few days into the semester, I knew it would be a rather demanding class with an essay due every week for ten weeks and a group presentation. I was amazed by the fact that I was able to learn more about English along with a lot about psychology. I felt slightly disappointed that it was impossible to go into depth on all the great material the textbook had. The class activities were very engaging and allowed me to apply the knowledge I was receiving into real life situations. I have gained a greater respect for those who’ve pursued their education in psychology as well as the forefathers of psychology. A lot of time and effort is required to succeed in this field and I am very impressed by my instructor’s determination and desire to go as far as she has with her psychology career.
I feel much more acquainted with psychology and even though I am not pursuing psychology as a major, I would like to continue taking psychology courses to build on the understanding I’ve gained just from this semester. I never once dreaded attending class and enjoyed learning the material covered in this course. It has been a wonderful semester and my instructor is such a trooper for having had both hips replaced and still keeping up with her teaching responsibilities. I hope to have the chance of taking another psychology class from her in the future!
