Diversity And Discrimination In America
"[People] may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but [they] all
belong to one human race."– Kofi Annan
Having served as the seventh Secretary–General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, Kofi
Annan is very knowledgeable about the concept of unity between the people in this world. In this
short, yet profound statement, he expresses that although people are different in many ways, they all
share the prime aspect of being human, and thus are capable of uniting. Among all the countries on
this globe, America is one nation that contains people who embody this idea; the people of America
can unify even though they are diverse in countless ways. What makes the Americans' unification
possible is their readiness to unite for a common cause no matter the obstacles. ... Show more

The American people are willing to overcome the troubles caused by their differences to come
together to resolve an issue that they have as a country that demands their unification. During such
times, the Americans force themselves to "stand with [one another] as many tomorrows as it takes"
in spite of their differences (Clinton par. 8). The citizens of America do not allow their diversity to
separate them in those occasions. As a mean to unite, they direct themselves to tolerate differences
and be friendly to people with characteristics that clash with those of their own. During the
American Civil War, the Union soldiers, who carried many differences, took these measures because
they were all "dedicated to the great task" of bringing the Southern states back into the Union
(Lincoln par. 3). To complete this shared mission of theirs, the soldiers governed themselves to
accept one another so they can work together even though they differ in ethnicity, gender, religion,
and skin color. In essence, sharing a goal pushes Americans to strive for

Why Are East Asian Business Groups so Common?
Why Are Business Groups More Common In East Asia? It is thought that since the early 1960's
business groups have been a vital asset to the industrialization and economic growth of East Asian
Countries. A 'business group' is a group of legally independent firms bound together in a formal or
informal way. They have shown extreme rapid growth throughout East Asia, and have become a
very controversial topic when relating to East Asia's financial development, often being referred to
as "paragons or parasites". There are many proposed features of business groups, both positive and
negative, that have resulted in their rapid formation and substantial growth in Asia. During East
Asia's early economic development, the main capital markets ... Show more content on

This allows for the act of tunnelling, which is a way of directing company assets and future business
towards core owners so they can retain control over the country's corporate sectors with low cash
flows. Tunnelling methods such as providing low interest rates, selling assets, lowering market
prices, technology licensing and joint ventures, means dominant share holders can have the direct
benefit of using retained earnings for personal gain at a minority shareholders expense, hindering
their development in capital markets. Not only this, but growth has been linked to diversification, a
consequence of expropriation, and its impact on organisational performance. However, this theory is
conflicting because structural characteristics, resulting from family ownership, can decrease the
popularity of business groups in terms of outside investors, and complex company linkages can
relate to inefficient investment, unreliable accounting and possible inadequate managers through
inheritance. The Korean "Chaebol" is an example of a vertically organized pyramidal business group
still controlled by a number of founding families. The Chaebol , contains many well known
successful companies such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai and consists of centralized ownership,

Knowledge Is Power In The Invisible Man, By Ralph Ellison

Mind Does Not Matter
The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating.
Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family". Although this phrase may
contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily reject the notions of social
responsibility and social education. This is due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its
potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to
success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a
large group of people based on a variety of prejudices. Using this perspective can help better
understand the message of the novel, The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison. The story follows the life
of a black man during the late 1920's or early 1930's, when racism was at its peak. In this novel, the
author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not necessarily equal
power, but those who lack knowledge abuse their power. The author accomplishes this by showing
us the power of ignorance, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power.
Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator's speech in the beginning
of the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. The
author shows this when the narrator attempts to present

The Balance Of Beauty
In this 21st century and in the past, people living in the different parts of the world were and are
facing many social issues, community challenges, and human rights. For the people, "Balance of
Beauty" is the key to compete through the issues mentioned and to find peace and unity in one
global community. Beauty is the symbol of pluralism, thereby of unity. A balance of both unity and
pluralism can make changes in lives. Steps of pluralism, unity, and equality are mentioned as beauty
because those guidance's help makes life beautiful and more valuable. Moreover, working on that
guidance will make people's life balance. In this modern world, many events like conflicts, failures,
and wars. But alternatively, if we chose our world to be civilized and help prevent such issues, then
the community and the citizens should work upon pluralism, practices of civil society, unity,
working upon mankind, and acceptance of every belief. "No human development initiative can be
sustained unless; it operates in an environment that invests in pluralism and diversity, that it has an
extensive and engaged civil society and stable competent democratic governance. Today issues like
failing democracies and clash or lack of ignorance have led to problems in the communities. "A
major problem is that the industrialized world too often is severely lacking in credible information"
For instance, Asia and Africa are struggling from democratic governance failures and as we look at

The United Nations Security Council
The United Nations Security Council is one of the most important institutions within the United
Nations as it is the body that can pass resolutions which binds all of its members. Although while in
1945, there were only 51 members in the United Nations and today the United Nations membership
has risen to almost four times the number of the original one, the definitive authority of the United
Nations Security Council – the right to cast a veto – is still in the hands of the post–World War II
powers: Britain, France, Russia and the United States, as well as China, and 10 other countries.
These are elected annually in blocks of 5 and serve two– year terms.
Therefore, all the other countries do not have the same possibility and thus cannot present their
views with the same power and emphasis that the permanent members of the United Nations
Security council enjoy. Hence, it is not surprising that no institutional concern at the United Nations
has been studied more than the need to broaden the membership of the Security Council to reflect
the world of today rather than the one that existed at the Council's inception.
There have been continual murmurs about the need for reform of the United Nations since 1945.The
subject got high profile attention when on 23rd September, 2003 a panel of 16 international figures
commissioned by former Secretary General Kofi Annan published its recommendations on how to
update the United Nations to face such 21st–century challenges as terror, failed

many of us want and desire is to live in a free and unrestrictive manner; yet it is such a shame that
we do little or nothing at all to help those who need our help the most. In fact, those commissioned

This was addressed in the UN Secretary–General's Agenda for Peace in 1992, which found that links
between the different stages of a conflict increase the likelihood of violence against civilians. The
report also found that critical procedural movements would reduce the levels of violence that
civilians experience when warring parties are fighting. The report also found that keys to these
strategies were mechanisms like conflict prevention, dispute escalation prevention, and the
limitation of the spread of violence. Despite the findings of this report, there is still not enough
being done to reduce the violence that many are experiencing, particularly when considering the
recent death toll, refugee numbers, and amount of violence against women and children in Syria,
South Sudan, the Central Africa Republic, etc. The sad thing is that as these women and children
experience so much more than this op–ed could ever express, most of us, especially those at the
Security Council, will just sit by aimlessly watching as atrocities take place. This pleads the
question: what is the point in having a UN Security Council that does not have the welfare of
everyday women and children at the heart of its actions? Mandate after mandate and policy after
policy, the UN Security Council inadequately sits by and permits the slaughter of women and
children, the very civilians who will

Globalization In Canada Essay
Globalization is a phenomenon that has been impacting our world since as early as 114 BCE.
Globalization refers to the assimilation of different economies, trade, and communication. Its origins
can be traced back to the establishment of the Silk Road; an ancient trade route extending across
from China to the Mediterranean Sea. Globalization, throughout history has had a positive effect in
developing economies and creating trade. However, in light of recent events, many economists and
leaders are describing it as a barrier to a utopian society. As civil servant and Nobel Peace Prize
recipient Kofi Annan once said, "Globalization is a fact of life. But I believe we have
underestimated its fragility" (Annan 1999). In many parts of the world, globalization ... Show more

In 2014, mining contributed $54 billion to Canada' gross domestic product. The mining industry has
thrived on the concept of globalization. It has been reported that 75% of the world's mining
companies are headquartered in Canada (Dean, 2013) and many have expanded to other countries.
Mining is notoriously known for acid mine draining; the pollutant that occurs when water flows
through a sulfur–exposed material. Not only is treatment for acid mine drainage expensive, causing
taxpayers millions of dollars to clean it; it also contaminates drinking water, kills wildlife, and
destroys infrastructure. The Telkwa Coal Mine in Smithers, British Columbia, is especially known
for its role in damaging one of the town's biggest industries; fishing. The coal mine is located near
the Skeena River; a river filled with fish. In 1997, the Skeena fishery reported a 12% decrease in
salmon population (Zilker, 1998) due to the acid drainage material released by the Telkwa Coal
Mine. This was a significant hit considering the Skeena fishery was one of the provinces' most
important sources of income (Zilker, 1998). Due to action taken by protesters, however; mining
companies are faced with strict regulations by Environment Canada (Souza, 2013), and the effect of
acid mine drainage has lessened over the years. However, bit by bit, globalization is continuously
destroying Canada's environment and negatively

The Doctrine Of The Responsibility
The doctrine of the Responsibility to Protect emerged during the mid–90s following the
International Communities failure to respond to the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia. It is an
emerging principle which has been increasingly grounded in international law over the past decade,
it dictates that national sovereignty is not a right and holds governments accountable to protect their
citizens. Many had adverse reactions to this breach of state sovereignty, which is outlined in the
Charter of the United Nations, despite its necessity; from this it became clear that there must be
international consensus detailing when it is appropriate to intervene and what measures should be
taken. Recalling the failings of the Security Council to take action in necessary Secretary General
for the United Nations, Kofi Annan asked:
If humanitarian intervention is, indeed, an unacceptable assault on sovereignty, how should we
respond to a Rwanda, to a Srebrenica, to gross and systematic violation of human rights that offend
every precept of our common humanity?
Although this doctrine is not detailed in legislation, the International Commissions on Intervention
and State Sovereignty first coined the term after being set up by the Canadian Government in
December 2001 which sought to answer Kofi Annan's question. Following the United Nations
World Summit in September 2005, all member states formally accepted responsibility to prevent
"mass atrocities" so this doctrine allows likeminded

The New World Of The United States
More so than that, Huntington was writing during a time when the United States was the world's
only military superpower which lead to the idea that America should take the lead in establishing the
"new world order", one which would be dominated by the United States and their allies. Because of
this, American diplomats and officials were faced with regional, religious and ethnic conflicts that,
as Huntington argues, could not be easily solved. During this time the United States were making
major decisions about the layout and status of the new world order. It becomes clear that Huntington
would believe future conflicts would arise from cultural differences due to previous cultural clashes
and that the most powerful country in the world, the United States, was also unable to create
solutions for conflicts fueled by cultural differences.
There are also smaller factors that could have had an impact on Huntington's outlook and thesis. In
1992 Patrick Buchanan was campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination when he
warned that the country was "undergoing the greatest invasion in its history, a migration of millions
of illegal aliens a year from Mexico." An influx of immigrants, who bring their culture, customs and
religion with them, could begin to create a clash in Huntington's own country. Living in a time when
the political discourse revolves around anti–immigration helps Huntington to argue that civilizations
will clash along cultural lines. If immigrants with

The Need To Safeguard The Practice Of Research Ethics
Research Ethics
This essay is aimed at my fellow students and tries to explain using some different case studies
firstly what research ethics are and what happens when you don't stick to these same ethics.
Research ethics involves concepts and principles of right conduct within the research being carried
out. Oxford dictionary defined ethics as 'Moral principles that govern a person's behaviour or the
conducting of an activity' (Oxford). This is especially true within research ethics as this research is a
public trust that must be ethically conducted, trustworthy, and socially responsible if the results are
to be valuable and be believed.
The need to safeguard the practice of research ethics within all fields of sciences and engineering is

(Research & Economic Development)
During the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002, held on
the, the then UN Secretary–General Kofi Annan (2002) stated that "And more and more we are
realizing that it is only by mobilizing the corporate sector that we can make significant progress. The
corporate sector has the finances, the technology and the management to make this happen" (Annan,
2002, para. 5–6).
This shows that assessing the compatibility of business ethics and sustainable development is
important and is encouraged at the highest level.
A basic ethical dilemma that commonly takes place with many engineers has to be the duty to report
a to the proper responsible authorities if a client or employer is failing to follow the engineer's
directions and/or designs causing possible harm. This duty should annul all or any duty to a client or
the employer as it may put people in harms way. As an engineer they may face some penalties, or
have their license taken away, if something unethical has occurred (Engineers,

A Quilt Of A Country By Kofi Anna Quindlen
Uniting Together Equals Success
In regards to Kofi Annan, it is believed that we all need to join together in order to live in a strong
environment and we need one another in order to grow stronger as a nation. Kofi Annan once said,"
We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one
human race." This statement emphasizes the significance of finding common ground due to the fact
that it explains that everyone needs to get past their differences in order to come together and grow
to make the environment and nation they live in superior. Two authors in this unit also argue that
individuals need to find common ground. In "A Quilt of a Country", Anna Quindlen claims that
conflict unites all people. Likewise, Eboo Patel claims that all people work together to overcome ...

democracy would thrive"(patel, 5). This quote dialogue illustrates that if the public is not linked
together then they will easily fall apart, therefore, being together will make this nation be successful.
This is critical because the United States cannot function if society is separated and in order to
accomplish obstacles successfully the nation as a whole must stick together, no matter the different
races and opinions within. A moreover example that proves both the author's point is when Patel
asserts,"This nation could well have been a house divided, but today we stand as one..."(Patel, 6).
This quote describes that the people as a whole has decided to stand together because in the end
when the nation is united the people will accomplish great things. This imperative because being a

Kofi Annan,

With this citation the Secretary General of UN took the responsibility to support the humanitarian
intervention. The defence of this principle and the realization of this task rely on the UNSC, the only
authority accountable of the determination of any threats to the international peace as the article 39
of the UN Charter says:
"The Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace,

accordance with Articles 41 and 42, to maintain or restore international peace and security."
Moreover, the Charter gives precise indications about the exception to the articles 2(4) and 2(7),
supplying guidelines for the use of the military action and hence, implicitly legitimising its existence
as a political tool. First of all the undeniable case for the use of force its connected to the right of

The Relations of the United States and the United Nations
The history of the US's relationship with the UN is complex, seeming to vacillate between warm
cooperation and abject disdain as the national interests of the US and the rest of the world, and the
short– and long–term interests of the US itself, align or oppose each other. The UN was originally
the vision of US president Franklin Roosevelt and the product of US State Department planning and
diplomacy. It was designed to forward the national interests of its strongest members, the P–5, to
reflect and channel the geopolitical power structure rather than twist it into an unnatural and
unsustainable hierarchy of weak nations trying to dominate strong. Because the Charter is ... Show

One of the major areas of reform must be the Security Council, which has deviated from reflecting
the real state of the world and therefore is no longer effectively responsible for the peace and
security of the world. Unless the UN can reform in this and other ways outlined by SG Kofi Annan,
it will never achieve the lofty goals envisioned by the framers of its Charter, the US will finally
forsake it because it will be unable to work in the US's national interest, and it will sink into the
obscurity of history.
American Support for a Realist Charter
The US has powered the UN since its beginnings in the wake of WWII. It began as US President
Roosevelt's vision for "Four Policemen"–the US, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China–to
maintain peace in the postwar world. The UN, as Roosevelt saw it, was to unite and channel the
strength of these countries. Based on Roosevelt's vision, the UN was also first laid out in the plans
of American diplomats during WWII, and the negotiations over the Charter took place at two
American locations.
The Americans put diplomatic power behind their plans during the two conferences that hashed out
the terms of the treaty framing the UN: the first at Dumbarton Oaks from August to October, 1944,
and the second in San Francisco from April to June, 1945. At Dumbarton Oaks, only the most
important players–Russia, China, the US, and Great Britain–hashed out the most important parts of
the Charter, but they brought

Climate Change And Resource Scarcity
Climate Change & Resource Scarcity
Resources throughout the United States are being exhausted an alarming rate. In fact, "95% of the
original forests in the United States are now gone" (DiCaprio).Personally, I think this is a shocking
and eye opening statistic. The statistic really gives you an insight on how much of the natural world
humans have used in order to sustain the lifestyles they currently live. However, people cannot
continue to use natural resources at the current rate because they won't be able to sustain us for the
future. One component that is affecting our resources is climate change. Countries all over the world
are experiencing changes in their climates that have caused droughts and conflicts over natural
resources, such as water and oil. Additionally, a changing climate will cause healthcare systems all
over the world to adapt to treating new diseases (Richardson, et al. 44).
Earth is a planet that has many complex components that work in unison to allow humans and
millions of other species to live on it. Stephen Emmott, author of Ten Billion states, "the main
components of the systems are the atmosphere (the air we breathe), hydrosphere (the planet's water),
cryosphere (the ice sheet and glaciers), and the biosphere (the planet's plants and animals" (36).
Throughout the course of human history, humans and the Earth have lived in mutual harmony.

The Rana Plaza Analysis
In the world we live in today, everyone is now connected to each other. Whether we realize it or not,
every action we commit can lead to a butterfly effect that can either save or ruin another person's
life. In some cases this ability to potentially change someone's life can be good. For example, thanks
to globalization there are now sweatshops in China that are bettering the lives of countless workers
and their families. However, as we have seen the negative effects that come from globalization
could be devastating. One event that exemplifies the disastrous effects of globalization would be the
Rana Plaza collapse which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people (Julfikar, and Nida). This
brings up the debatable argument of whether globalization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Human beings alone are limited. Our physical strength, mental strength, and stamina limit us to a
specific set things we can and cannot accomplish. In order to overcome this, humans began to rely
on each other to complete tasks we normally cannot complete by ourselves. Matt Ridley further
illustrated this by demonstrating the evolution of ideas as we become more and more social. He
describes this through the following story, "...if Oz makes two spears and Adam make two axes, and
then they trade, then they will each have saved an hour of work. And the more they do this, the more
true it's going to be, because the more they do this, the better Adam is going to get at making axes
and the better Oz is going to get at making spears." (Matt Ridley, ted.com, When Ideas have Sex).
This beneficial relationship is exactly why Globalization is inevitable. The amount that we can gain
from each other is far too high for humans to remain isolated. Humans will always eventually find
that working in larger groups to distribute work is far more efficient than working alone. Since
humans would have always turned to communities of people, globalization will always come to
realization. In order for humans to develop, it is necessary for people to work together. By working
in communities, humans can produce better living standards, science, and technology. In extension,
globalization has a similar effect as working in a community. Globalization makes it much easier to
create and produce things of a higher quality at a much cheaper price. Due to the effect that it has, it
is likely that human beings will always get to globalization eventually. After a certain point,
globalization would have advanced science and technology to the point where it is faster than we

Warnings In Julius Caesar Essay
In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar ignores many warnings about his
death. He ignores the soothsayer and his wife, Calphurnia's, warnings; he decides to visit the Capitol
even though there are many omens like storms that split old oak trees, and a lion walking on the
street without bothering to attack people. Similarly, the United Nations ignored many warnings of
the Rwandan Genocide, in which almost a million Tutsis were slaughtered between April to July,
1994. Before the Rwandan Genocide, people at the UN headquarters paid no attention to the ethnic
tensions that existed before the genocide, and they took no notice of a letter about the Hutus' plan to
kill all the Tutsis. Key players in both Julius Caesar and the Rwandan Genocide ignore both
environmental and personal warnings about impending danger.

Similar to the events of 1994, rumors were a catalyst in this upheaval. These took the form of false
reports, that Tutsi extremists had murdered Hutus. The underlying cause of this breakdown of order
was the Hutu's need for independence, freedom and equality. It also had to do with the fact that
things were bad enough for Hutus that they were ready to believe that it was possible for the Tutsis
to commit terrible crimes that might go unpunished by the Belgians. The consequence was that
300,000 Tutsis were driven out of the country, thereby making them an even smaller minority. In

The Death Of Julius Caesar By William Shakespeare And The...
Warnings play a very important role in the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and the
Rwandan Genocide in 1994. The omens and nightmares in the play foreshadow the death of Julius
Caesar that later resulted to chaos in Rome. The events that lead to the assassination of Julius Caesar
are predicted by omens from characters such as his wife Calphurnia, the Soothsayer, Artemidorus
and from the environment. Similarly, many warnings in the Rwanda history triggered the genocidal
slaughter, the Rwandan Genocide. The warnings illustrated tensions between ethnics groups such as
the Rwandan Revolution in 1959 and Dallaire's letter. Like Julius Caesar, member at the United

resulted to the slaughter of almost a million people. The keys plays in both Julius Caesar and the
Rwandan Genocide ignore environmental, personal or social warnings about the impending danger.
Julius Caesar's negligence and misinterpretation to the omens from the supernatural and prophecies
result in his failure to prevent his death. Caesar's choice to ignore the soothsayer's warnings to

Kofi Annan believes that globalization is unavoidable when he compares it to the laws of gravity
which is inescapable; this is exemplified when he states that "arguing against globalization is like

instead of fighting against globalization individuals should embrace and take the advantages it
offers. Kofi Annan has been the recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize along with many other honorific

The European colonization was a period in history when European countries such as Britain rapidly
took over and colonized many parts of the world which led to trade and interaction between
different peoples. Throughout the centuries of European control much advancement has been made
in transportation, communication and technology. In particular, the printing press, which was created
around the 1500's was a printing medium used to copy text. The printing press was slow to develop,
but it gradually initiated one of the first technological advancements which spread throughout
European cities and countries. This meant that with more printing presses being made there were
more copies of texts which led to a faster way of communication. The invention and advancement of
the printing press was one of the first contributing factors of globalization through communication.
One of the other major events that shaped history was the Silk Road. The Silk Road was an ancient
trade route stretching from Europe to Asia. It was used to export goods, but also served as a means
of carrying out cultural trade amongst different civilizations and it was used to exchange ideas. This
presents the idea that even though initially its purpose was only to trade and gain materials, it
eventually transformed into a way of communication between many different

Military Humanitarian Intervention Essay
Introduction
After the cold war humanitarian interventions has increased and since then they are more important
when conducting peace operations. (Baylis, 2016, 266) Today there's an ongoing debate on when to
use military force and for what purpose. After the humanitarian intervention in Kosovo 1999 that
was conducted without a mandate from the UN security council, Kofi Annan former Un security
general subsidised to the debate on when to use military force. Humanitarian interventions
challenges states sovereignty, when protecting civilians from harm conducted by their own state.
According to a humanitarian perspective states have a responsibility to protect civilians in order to
maintain justice. (Seybolt, 2007, 1) This paper will therefore examine how the use of military force
can be successful or unsuccessful, by presenting a qualitative comparative case study of the
humanitarian military interventions in Kosovo and Libya. Leading ... Show more content on

When UN gives a mandate to intervene it's the UN security council that decides the aim of the
intervention. In contrast, when lacking authorisation from the UN security council, it's the
conducting national governments that decide the aim of the intervention. Because of the complexity
of humanitarian interventions, mandate from the UN may also sometimes be unclear. Today
interventions also include long–term aims that are not military, like implementing peace and
stability in the region post–war. A task that will have an effect on the long–term effectiveness of the
military humanitarian intervention. (Collins, 2016, 275)
The effectiveness and susses of an intervention can be measured in two ways:
1. Amount of saved lives, this is the short–term goal.
2. Peace and stability in the region after the intervention, this is the long–term goal. (Seybolt, 2007)

Ecstasy To Hope, By Kofi Annan
To begin with, individuals should develop a healthy habit of reading books frequently as books tend
to change their lifestyle, peoples' behaviour, and their critical thinking. An inspiring idea is that,
"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope," written by Kofi Annan. Indeed, this quote shows how
people who read customarily have a gleeful and hopeful life than those who do not take the initiative
of reading habitually. As mentioned, the word "misery" describes the dark, blind side of person's life
who does not read. On the other hand, the expression "hope" refers to an individual who has a
bright, delighted life full of hope because of frequent reading. Furthermore, the significance of this
quote is to show the difference between a reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People go on their way of changing (bridge) and at the end of their changing stage they find the
results of their changes (hope). In other words, after reading individuals will have a hopeful and
useful life instead of a miserable life. The term "bridge" means the stage of changing from having a
depressed life as a non reader to having a cheerful life as a reader. Most importantly, reading helps
individuals to be aware of new vocabulary, explore new experience, help individuals ro become
more confident and social. In fact, as an immigrant who has been here for almost three years, I got
the chance to improve my language and gain new words through reading various books. More
importantly, reading allowed me to become more confident and more social than I was before. I am
able to communicate with others and talk with anyone about any topic as now I have the knowledge
to talk confidently from reading books. As the quote says "Literacy is a bridge from misery to
hope." That applies to me as my weaknesses are the miserable side of my life, I went through the
whole process of changing (bridge) and after that I completely changed which is hope, what the

Research Paper: The Scary Truth About Depression
The Scary Truth About Depression Depression is defined as "the feeling of severe despondency and
abjection in an individual." As one of the most prominent mental illnesses in the world today,
depression affects over 300 million people in society and influences each person differently (
"Depression"). Feeling lonely is something many people experience; however, depression is a more
severe condition, and is the leading disability worldwide, affecting more women than men. There
are many types of depression, the most common form being dysthymic disorder (Wexler).
Dysthymia occurs more in children, adolescents and young adults, and, while the severity varies, in
severe cases it can be debilitating (Wexler). Signs and symptoms of depression are ... Show more

This shows how depression is such a misunderstood topic worldwide, that even trained doctors are
wrongly diagnosing patients. Depression and other mental illnesses can start developing in
adolescence and peak in adults around the age of 25 (Friedman). Untreated depression or any other
form of mental illness can also lead to relapses, and an increased severity of their symptoms.
Depression took a downward plunge in the 90's causing antidepressants such as Prozac to thrive on
the market. Between 8% – 10% of Americans take an antidepressant, yet this is hardly a cure. The
problem with antidepressants is that once an individual stops taking the drug, their pain and
suffering may increase as they experience symptoms of withdrawal. Additional research is needed
from scientists, and America as a whole needs to be better educated about mental illness and
depression, so that families and friends can be better prepared to help their loved ones cope with
these illnesses. Antidepressants need to not be relied on as much, better yet only used as a last resort
to helping individuals. A more reasonable approach is going to a therapist first and being taught how
to cope and deal with the symptoms of depression individually, while also getting support from
family and friends. Those who oppose further research and treatment

Forgiveness And The Future
Forgiving is often a conscious decision to let go of the pain, anger and bitterness arising from hurtful
situations, then move on and live our lives the best we can despite the past. Forgiveness can take
time and it can be difficult, but it's essential for boosting happiness, mental and physical health.

The nature gives seasons. From morning to night, as from cradle to the grave, is but a succession of
changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress. The process of change and
challenge is always at work. For some change brings cheer, whereas for others it may mean
moments of chagrin. Both painful and pleasant, a shift from the established order to a new one is
inevitable. There is no monotony.
The breakup of joint family system in India is a case for study and a standing example of change
that has overtaken us so fast. The emergence of nuclear family is a telling tribute to the process of
change over which we have no control whatsoever. That the Indian society is at the crossroads is not
a matter of fiction, but a vigorous reality.

The Syrian Civil War and UN’s Failure to Solve It
Between February 4th, and February 11th, 1945, the Yalta Conference was held in Crimea.[i] The
conference determined the majority of the decisions made by the most powerful branch of the
United Nations. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and
USSR Premier Joseph Stalin secured three permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.
[ii] At the United Nations Conference on International Organization in April–June 1945, the five
permanent seats of the UNSC were finalized along with the Charter of the United Nations.[iii] The
main argument for accepting the veto rule was, "it was unconceivable that the United Nations should

It is therefore essential to its legitimacy that its membership reflect the state of the world."[xiv]
These two opinions outline the main concern over the problematic structure of the UNSC, which is
that all permanent members of the council are elite nuclear powers whose actions are unchecked due
to their veto powers. The UNSC has neither true international representation, which is crucial to its
purpose of maintaining international peace and security, nor does it have the ability to carry out its
fundamental role since it predominantly addresses the strategic interests and political motives of its
permanent members. This problem of the UNSC, namely, that it is being ruled by P5 nations,
manifested itself in its lack of will to make humanitarian interventions to the Rwandan conflict in
1994.[xv] UNSC's inactivity at the Syrian Civil War is predominantly due to these two flaws in its
structure.
Although these two flaws constitute the main problem with UNSC, there are also other criticisms on
UNSC's structure. It is not unknown that the P5 nations secretly hold outside closed door meetings
and decide on matters concerning international peace and security. The results obtained from these
outside meetings are presented to the rest of the council during normal caucuses.[xvi] That P5
nations hold

Ignorance In The Invisible Man
The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating.
Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family" (Annan). Although this
phrase may contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily rejected notions of social
responsibility and social education, due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its
potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to
success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a
large group of people based on a variety of unrelated factors. This perspective can be used to better
understand the message of the novel The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, a story about the life of a
black man during the late 1920's or early 1930's, when racism against black people was prevalent. In
this novel, the author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not
necessarily equal power. The author accomplishes this by showing us the ignorance of those in
power, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power.
Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator's speech in the beginning
of the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. This is
shown to us by the author when the narrator is attempting to present his speech and makes an
important observation, stating, "I spoke automatically

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Debate Games
For me, every project is associated with a drop of water, and only the amalgam of drops can form
the great ocean of good things, that do not require a reward.
One of this drops is debate. I've started playing debates 3 years ago. Debate games formed in myself
critical and logical thinking. I've gained ability to analyze constructively on different topics, for
instance: "THBT everyone who has attained publicly funded education should work a minimum of 3
years.", "Advantages and disadvantages of migration for Moldova", "Republic of Moldova can be
integrated in Europe", "Citizens must pay much more taxes in local budgets than in public one" and
others. Games promotes courage of expression, self–confidence, tolerance for other points of views.

The, Political, And Economic Recession
Raging wars, political disputes, and economic recession are several of the many things that has been
troubling the people of the world since 1939. Ever since from then, countless lives had to be spare
for the life we own today. Nonetheless, migration of these people was inevitable; they needed to
look for a place to stay, to be safe, and to be able to survive for their children's sake and for
themselves. In recent 20 years back, the approach of handling these 'aliens' has been acceptable but
in some cases unforgivable due to globalization. The technology growth and the advancement of
communication options has made traveling a more pleasant thing rather than an obstacle. Some were
probably believe that they would have a better chance in other places as their own does not show a
promising future for them to survive. Nevertheless, although efforts were made, there are still some
that does not abide to the motion; to provide help to those who are in need; they choose to become
preserved –– prompting the question, why? Helping people is a nature that we human have carried
for many generations; it's a fact but, can we provide the proper necessity to actually be a help
towards them? Who is to blame here? Should all the countries join forces to help the migrants and
refugees, regardless of their origin? The answers are discussed over two different articles of

Immigration Issues
Over the years the United States has been called a nation of immigrants. The fact that America is a
melting pot for so many different cultures, races, and religions makes it unique in the world. The
newcomers, both legal and illegal, fill labor shortages and provide new business opportunities.
History shows they also bring ideas, vigor, and ambition. However, rising immigrant numbers and
messy immigration policies have become a serious problem to gain control of. Although immigrants
have contributed to America, the government should reform current immigration policies and limit

As Kofi Annan in her lecture on "International Flows of Humanity" states, "migrant workers in
developed countries send at least $88 billion back to their countries of origin–more than those same
developing countries received in official development aid" (Annan). If American government won't
do anything about it, the numbers will grow faster with each year. I suggest that to compensate the
loss of national wealth, American government should stop sending financial aid to developing
countries. Unlimited immigration will cause a large population problem. The large population in
India has caused increasing unemployment, unsafe environments, and a lack of resources. Following
their experience, America should be on the alert that continued rising immigrant numbers will lead
to a large population one day. It is estimated that if immigration continues at a current levels, the
nation's population will increase from 301 million today to 468 million in 2060 – a 167 million (56
percent) increase (Camarota). Immigrants plus their descendents will account for 105 million (63
percent) of the increase (Camarota). Kofi Annan mentions in her article:
"The more we try to deal with migration simply by clamping down on it with tighter border
controls, the more we find that human rights are sacrificed–on the journey, at the border, and inside
host countries."

Diversity In America Essay
"We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we are all human
race" – Kofi Annan. This quote said by Kofi Annan explains perfectly how not all people have to be
of the same background or even the same culture but everyone is still a human being so you can not
treat them as any less. America is a melting pot because of all the different cultures in the US today.
Also, the US is working on rights for all by making it more convenient for people who do not speak
English to have the same rights. While some people believe diversity separates a country, it can be
argued that diversity creates unity because today the US is a melting pot, and they are working on
rights for all.
In the past, society created diversity, but in today's society it's starting to create unity in several
ways. In source one there is two main ways that show the US is a melting pot. The title of source

Globalization And The Laws Of Gravity
"Arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity" (Kofi Annan, Fmr. United
Nations Secretary General)
Kofi Annan believes that globalization is unavoidable when he compares it to the laws of gravity
which is inescapable, this is exemplified when he states that "arguing against globalization is like
arguing against the laws of gravity". He believes it is pointless because it is bound to happen and
instead of fighting against globalization individuals should embrace and take the advantages it
offers. It is known that the laws of gravity are conclusive and inevitable, Newton defines the law of
gravity by explaining that every mass exerts a dependant, attracted force on every other mass. In
relation to the laws of gravity, globalization can also be explained as a force that is inevitable, which
is forced and or used by people. Kofi Annan has been the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize along
with many other honorific awards and has served as a secretary–general in the United Nations. Kofi
Annan is definitely aware of what happens globally and values the concept of world peace and
development which is why it is understandable that he would support unification because global
interaction and relations is what he believes will create a tranquil world. In addition to that, United
Nations is an organization which promotes international unification, this would account for why

Kofi Annan Finding Common Ground
In American society, two individuals often join hands and collaborate regardless of their different
characteristics. Even though their identities may clash with each others' and be absolute opposites,
their union remains unaffected. Their combined strength enables them to complete many tasks. In
the unit of "Finding Common Ground," the selections focuses on the citizens of America to explore
this concept of being unified despite diversity. Kofi Annan sums up this unit by saying, "[People]
may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but [they] all belong to one
human race," in which he expresses that though people are carry differences, they have the potential
to unite. The main messages of this unit coincide with his words because the texts highlight that the
people of any country can unify and be strong as a group if they have the resolve to do so.

themselves. Differences will not stand in the way then. Their willingness to unite will drive them to
"build [a] beloved community" (Martin Luther King Jr., Making the Future Better, Together page 8,
line 97), where people tolerate or even embrace the differences of one another. If people do not have
determination, they will not be able to discard their tendency to not welcome other people who are
different from them and remain separated. In the end, the realization of unity in a nation depends on

Essay On African Americans
The Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Kofi Annan, once said, "We may have different religions, different
languages, different colored skin, but we only belong to one human race". When someone is given
advantages or disadvantages because of their skin color, that is racial inequality. African Americans
have a disadvantage when it comes to police, jobs, and even education. It is not right for people to
be treated different just because of their skin color. America has not yet received racial equality,
even after hundreds of years. First of all, in the past few years there have been multiple incidents
proving that America has not yet achieved racial equality, and possibly never will. For example,
there have been many incidents where a white cop has shot an African American, some armed and
some not, but no matter the reason for why the cop shot them, it is almost immediately believed to
be because of race (Black Lives Matter: 11 Racist Police Killings With No Justice Served).
"'Unarmed black men are seven times more likely than whites to die by police gunfire,' the
Washington Post reports on police brutality targeted at black Americans. The report estimated that
an unarmed black man was shot and killed by police every nine days in 2015."(11 Facts about
Racial Discrimination). This statistic was stated just last year, therefore proving that America has not
yet reached racial equality and is quite a ways from it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Humanitarian Assistance and Sierra Leone Essay
Humanitarian Assistance and Sierra Leone Introduction When a country fails to provide the basic
needs of survival for its people, the international community is faced with the issue of intervention.
However, there exists no clearly defined doctrine to guide governments or humanitarian
organizations in these matters. Some people believe that the protection of sovereignty is more
important than the possible benefits of intervention, preferring that governments focus on domestic
concerns. Opposing this are those who believe that humanitarian intervention is necessary to resolve
many conflicts and that the preservation of life trumps all else. Still another mentality suggests that
these two goals are not mutually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The RUF forces led attacks that left many dead and maimed civilians in their wake. They employed
brutal tactics, involving cutting off hands, arms, and legs, while leaving many of these amputees
alive. The other especially troubling aspect of the RUF's fighting tactics was its use of child
militants. These children were abducted and forced to commit some of the worst atrocities of the
war. Britain chose to intervene and put a stop to this cycle of violence. While it may have had
ulterior motives for its intervention, as will be discussed below, it also felt a certain obligation to
help Sierra Leone , which once was Britain 's colony. Sovereignty and Non–Intervention With the
preservation of sovereignty a major issue to them, some people believe that the concept of non–
intervention, or staying out of another country's affairs, is the proper course of action for the world.
According to Adam Roberts in his article "Humanitarian Intervention Is Not Effective," the policy of
non–intervention "provides a clear rule for limiting the uses of force by states and for reducing the
risks of war between the armed forces of different states. . . . It involves respect for different
societies and their religions, economic systems and political arrangements" (40). Those who take
this poistion believe that referring to a military intervention as "humanitarian aid" skews the reality
of what it actually involves.

Why Reform Is Necessary And Should Indeed Take Place Essay
The UN was formed by the victors of World War 2 and so at that time it was fitting that those most
powerful countries be granted special powers in the organisation. Now in the present day, there has
been a growth in powerful states with just as much influence. It has been contested by many that the
UN Security Council reflects and outdated past. With a huge change concerning the power politics
of states, very little has been done to reflect this change in the Security Council (Global Policy
Forum, 2016). For the longest time now, debates concerning Security Council reform have been on–
going however with no possible agreement in sight. I stand with the argument that reform is
necessary and should indeed take place. Throughout the rest of my essay, I am going to lay down
major criticisms towards the Security Council that has called for its reform. Following that I will
provide the different kinds of proposals that have been put forward and taken up the UN. Along with
arguments for Security Council reform, comes major obstacles and towards the end of this paper I
will discuss the challenges faced by the issue of reform altogether.
Much talk of reform dates back to 1993 but only recently the pressure of reform was highly noted as
a result of the UN's lamentable work in Syria (Gowan& Gordon, 2014). One major issue concerning
reform is the idea of effectiveness. The United Nations Security Council is hugely criticised for not
producing any significant effect in the work

Diversity And Discrimination In America: Unity Through Shared Goals

  • 1. Diversity And Discrimination In America "[People] may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but [they] all belong to one human race."– Kofi Annan Having served as the seventh Secretary–General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, Kofi Annan is very knowledgeable about the concept of unity between the people in this world. In this short, yet profound statement, he expresses that although people are different in many ways, they all share the prime aspect of being human, and thus are capable of uniting. Among all the countries on this globe, America is one nation that contains people who embody this idea; the people of America can unify even though they are diverse in countless ways. What makes the Americans' unification possible is their readiness to unite for a common cause no matter the obstacles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American people are willing to overcome the troubles caused by their differences to come together to resolve an issue that they have as a country that demands their unification. During such times, the Americans force themselves to "stand with [one another] as many tomorrows as it takes" in spite of their differences (Clinton par. 8). The citizens of America do not allow their diversity to separate them in those occasions. As a mean to unite, they direct themselves to tolerate differences and be friendly to people with characteristics that clash with those of their own. During the American Civil War, the Union soldiers, who carried many differences, took these measures because they were all "dedicated to the great task" of bringing the Southern states back into the Union (Lincoln par. 3). To complete this shared mission of theirs, the soldiers governed themselves to accept one another so they can work together even though they differ in ethnicity, gender, religion, and skin color. In essence, sharing a goal pushes Americans to strive for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Why Are East Asian Business Groups so Common? Why Are Business Groups More Common In East Asia? It is thought that since the early 1960's business groups have been a vital asset to the industrialization and economic growth of East Asian Countries. A 'business group' is a group of legally independent firms bound together in a formal or informal way. They have shown extreme rapid growth throughout East Asia, and have become a very controversial topic when relating to East Asia's financial development, often being referred to as "paragons or parasites". There are many proposed features of business groups, both positive and negative, that have resulted in their rapid formation and substantial growth in Asia. During East Asia's early economic development, the main capital markets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows for the act of tunnelling, which is a way of directing company assets and future business towards core owners so they can retain control over the country's corporate sectors with low cash flows. Tunnelling methods such as providing low interest rates, selling assets, lowering market prices, technology licensing and joint ventures, means dominant share holders can have the direct benefit of using retained earnings for personal gain at a minority shareholders expense, hindering their development in capital markets. Not only this, but growth has been linked to diversification, a consequence of expropriation, and its impact on organisational performance. However, this theory is conflicting because structural characteristics, resulting from family ownership, can decrease the popularity of business groups in terms of outside investors, and complex company linkages can relate to inefficient investment, unreliable accounting and possible inadequate managers through inheritance. The Korean "Chaebol" is an example of a vertically organized pyramidal business group still controlled by a number of founding families. • 5. Knowledge Is Power In The Invisible Man, By Ralph Ellison Abtin Ghajarieh Sepanlou ENG 4U Ms. Smith 19 July 2017 Mind Does Not Matter The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family". Although this phrase may contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily reject the notions of social responsibility and social education. This is due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a large group of people based on a variety of prejudices. Using this perspective can help better understand the message of the novel, The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison. The story follows the life of a black man during the late 1920's or early 1930's, when racism was at its peak. In this novel, the author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not necessarily equal power, but those who lack knowledge abuse their power. The author accomplishes this by showing us the power of ignorance, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power. Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator's speech in the beginning of the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. The author shows this when the narrator attempts to present ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Balance Of Beauty In this 21st century and in the past, people living in the different parts of the world were and are facing many social issues, community challenges, and human rights. For the people, "Balance of Beauty" is the key to compete through the issues mentioned and to find peace and unity in one global community. Beauty is the symbol of pluralism, thereby of unity. A balance of both unity and pluralism can make changes in lives. Steps of pluralism, unity, and equality are mentioned as beauty because those guidance's help makes life beautiful and more valuable. Moreover, working on that guidance will make people's life balance. In this modern world, many events like conflicts, failures, and wars. But alternatively, if we chose our world to be civilized and help prevent such issues, then the community and the citizens should work upon pluralism, practices of civil society, unity, working upon mankind, and acceptance of every belief. "No human development initiative can be sustained unless; it operates in an environment that invests in pluralism and diversity, that it has an extensive and engaged civil society and stable competent democratic governance. Today issues like failing democracies and clash or lack of ignorance have led to problems in the communities. "A major problem is that the industrialized world too often is severely lacking in credible information" For instance, Asia and Africa are struggling from democratic governance failures and as we look at the world map ... • 9. The United Nations Security Council The United Nations Security Council is one of the most important institutions within the United Nations as it is the body that can pass resolutions which binds all of its members. Although while in 1945, there were only 51 members in the United Nations and today the United Nations membership has risen to almost four times the number of the original one, the definitive authority of the United Nations Security Council – the right to cast a veto – is still in the hands of the post–World War II powers: Britain, France, Russia and the United States, as well as China, and 10 other countries. These are elected annually in blocks of 5 and serve two– year terms. Therefore, all the other countries do not have the same possibility and thus cannot present their views with the same power and emphasis that the permanent members of the United Nations Security council enjoy. Hence, it is not surprising that no institutional concern at the United Nations has been studied more than the need to broaden the membership of the Security Council to reflect the world of today rather than the one that existed at the Council's inception. There have been continual murmurs about the need for reform of the United Nations since 1945.The subject got high profile attention when on 23rd September, 2003 a panel of 16 international figures commissioned by former Secretary General Kofi Annan published its recommendations on how to update the United Nations to face such 21st–century challenges as terror, failed ... Let's go" – General Roméo Dallaire, commanding United Nations forces in Rwanda, January 1994 OUR OBLIGATION TO THE WORLD In the modern societies in which many of us want and desire is to live in a free and unrestrictive manner; yet it is such a shame that we do little or nothing at all to help those who need our help the most. In fact, those commissioned and appointed to this task are often, if left to their own devices, the most unsuitable people for the job. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was addressed in the UN Secretary–General's Agenda for Peace in 1992, which found that links between the different stages of a conflict increase the likelihood of violence against civilians. The report also found that critical procedural movements would reduce the levels of violence that civilians experience when warring parties are fighting. The report also found that keys to these strategies were mechanisms like conflict prevention, dispute escalation prevention, and the limitation of the spread of violence. Despite the findings of this report, there is still not enough being done to reduce the violence that many are experiencing, particularly when considering the recent death toll, refugee numbers, and amount of violence against women and children in Syria, South Sudan, the Central Africa Republic, etc. The sad thing is that as these women and children experience so much more than this op–ed could ever express, most of us, especially those at the Security Council, will just sit by aimlessly watching as atrocities take place. This pleads the question: what is the point in having a UN Security Council that does not have the welfare of everyday women and children at the heart of its actions? Mandate after mandate and policy after policy, the UN Security Council inadequately sits by and permits the slaughter of women and children, the very civilians who will ... • 13. Globalization In Canada Essay Globalization is a phenomenon that has been impacting our world since as early as 114 BCE. Globalization refers to the assimilation of different economies, trade, and communication. Its origins can be traced back to the establishment of the Silk Road; an ancient trade route extending across from China to the Mediterranean Sea. Globalization, throughout history has had a positive effect in developing economies and creating trade. However, in light of recent events, many economists and leaders are describing it as a barrier to a utopian society. As civil servant and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kofi Annan once said, "Globalization is a fact of life. But I believe we have underestimated its fragility" (Annan 1999). In many parts of the world, globalization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2014, mining contributed $54 billion to Canada' gross domestic product. The mining industry has thrived on the concept of globalization. It has been reported that 75% of the world's mining companies are headquartered in Canada (Dean, 2013) and many have expanded to other countries. Mining is notoriously known for acid mine draining; the pollutant that occurs when water flows through a sulfur–exposed material. Not only is treatment for acid mine drainage expensive, causing taxpayers millions of dollars to clean it; it also contaminates drinking water, kills wildlife, and destroys infrastructure. The Telkwa Coal Mine in Smithers, British Columbia, is especially known for its role in damaging one of the town's biggest industries; fishing. The coal mine is located near the Skeena River; a river filled with fish. In 1997, the Skeena fishery reported a 12% decrease in salmon population (Zilker, 1998) due to the acid drainage material released by the Telkwa Coal Mine. This was a significant hit considering the Skeena fishery was one of the provinces' most important sources of income (Zilker, 1998). Due to action taken by protesters, however; mining companies are faced with strict regulations by Environment Canada (Souza, 2013), and the effect of acid mine drainage has lessened over the years. However, bit by bit, globalization is continuously destroying Canada's environment and negatively ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Doctrine Of The Responsibility The doctrine of the Responsibility to Protect emerged during the mid–90s following the International Communities failure to respond to the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia. It is an emerging principle which has been increasingly grounded in international law over the past decade, it dictates that national sovereignty is not a right and holds governments accountable to protect their citizens. Many had adverse reactions to this breach of state sovereignty, which is outlined in the Charter of the United Nations, despite its necessity; from this it became clear that there must be international consensus detailing when it is appropriate to intervene and what measures should be taken. Recalling the failings of the Security Council to take action in necessary Secretary General for the United Nations, Kofi Annan asked: If humanitarian intervention is, indeed, an unacceptable assault on sovereignty, how should we respond to a Rwanda, to a Srebrenica, to gross and systematic violation of human rights that offend every precept of our common humanity? Although this doctrine is not detailed in legislation, the International Commissions on Intervention and State Sovereignty first coined the term after being set up by the Canadian Government in December 2001 which sought to answer Kofi Annan's question. Following the United Nations World Summit in September 2005, all member states formally accepted responsibility to prevent "mass atrocities" so this doctrine allows likeminded ... • 17. The New World Of The United States More so than that, Huntington was writing during a time when the United States was the world's only military superpower which lead to the idea that America should take the lead in establishing the "new world order", one which would be dominated by the United States and their allies. Because of this, American diplomats and officials were faced with regional, religious and ethnic conflicts that, as Huntington argues, could not be easily solved. During this time the United States were making major decisions about the layout and status of the new world order. It becomes clear that Huntington would believe future conflicts would arise from cultural differences due to previous cultural clashes and that the most powerful country in the world, the United States, was also unable to create solutions for conflicts fueled by cultural differences. There are also smaller factors that could have had an impact on Huntington's outlook and thesis. In 1992 Patrick Buchanan was campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination when he warned that the country was "undergoing the greatest invasion in its history, a migration of millions of illegal aliens a year from Mexico." An influx of immigrants, who bring their culture, customs and religion with them, could begin to create a clash in Huntington's own country. Living in a time when the political discourse revolves around anti–immigration helps Huntington to argue that civilizations will clash along cultural lines. If immigrants with ... The Need To Safeguard The Practice Of Research Ethics Research Ethics This essay is aimed at my fellow students and tries to explain using some different case studies firstly what research ethics are and what happens when you don't stick to these same ethics. Research ethics involves concepts and principles of right conduct within the research being carried out. Oxford dictionary defined ethics as 'Moral principles that govern a person's behaviour or the conducting of an activity' (Oxford). This is especially true within research ethics as this research is a public trust that must be ethically conducted, trustworthy, and socially responsible if the results are to be valuable and be believed. The corporate sector has the finances, the technology and the management to make this happen" (Annan, 2002, para. 5–6). This shows that assessing the compatibility of business ethics and sustainable development is important and is encouraged at the highest level. A basic ethical dilemma that commonly takes place with many engineers has to be the duty to report a to the proper responsible authorities if a client or employer is failing to follow the engineer's directions and/or designs causing possible harm. This duty should annul all or any duty to a client or the employer as it may put people in harms way. A Quilt Of A Country By Kofi Anna Quindlen Uniting Together Equals Success In regards to Kofi Annan, it is believed that we all need to join together in order to live in a strong environment and we need one another in order to grow stronger as a nation. Kofi Annan once said," We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race." This statement emphasizes the significance of finding common ground due to the fact that it explains that everyone needs to get past their differences in order to come together and grow to make the environment and nation they live in superior. This is critical because the United States cannot function if society is separated and in order to accomplish obstacles successfully the nation as a whole must stick together, no matter the different races and opinions within. A moreover example that proves both the author's point is when Patel asserts,"This nation could well have been a house divided, but today we stand as one..."(Patel, 6). If humanitarian intervention is indeed an unacceptable assault on sovereignty, how should we respond to a Rwanda, to a Srebrenica–to gross and systematic violations of human rights that offend every precept of our common humanity? Kofi Annan, Millennium Report of the Secretary–General of the United Nations, 2000 With this citation the Secretary General of UN took the responsibility to support the humanitarian intervention. The defence of this principle and the realization of this task rely on the UNSC, the only authority accountable of the determination of any threats to the international peace as the article 39 of the UN Charter says: "The Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression and shall make recommendations, or decide what measures shall be taken in accordance with Articles 41 and 42, to maintain or restore international peace and security." Moreover, the Charter gives precise indications about the exception to the articles 2(4) and 2(7), supplying guidelines for the use of the military action and hence, implicitly legitimising its existence as a political tool. First of all the undeniable case for the use of force its connected to the right of self defence expressed in articles 51: " Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self– defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken ... The Relations of the United States and the United Nations The history of the US's relationship with the UN is complex, seeming to vacillate between warm cooperation and abject disdain as the national interests of the US and the rest of the world, and the short– and long–term interests of the US itself, align or oppose each other. The UN was originally the vision of US president Franklin Roosevelt and the product of US State Department planning and diplomacy. It was designed to forward the national interests of its strongest members, the P–5, to reflect and channel the geopolitical power structure rather than twist it into an unnatural and unsustainable hierarchy of weak nations trying to dominate strong. Because the Charter is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the major areas of reform must be the Security Council, which has deviated from reflecting the real state of the world and therefore is no longer effectively responsible for the peace and security of the world. Unless the UN can reform in this and other ways outlined by SG Kofi Annan, it will never achieve the lofty goals envisioned by the framers of its Charter, the US will finally forsake it because it will be unable to work in the US's national interest, and it will sink into the obscurity of history. American Support for a Realist Charter The US has powered the UN since its beginnings in the wake of WWII. It began as US President Roosevelt's vision for "Four Policemen"–the US, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China–to maintain peace in the postwar world. The UN, as Roosevelt saw it, was to unite and channel the strength of these countries. Based on Roosevelt's vision, the UN was also first laid out in the plans of American diplomats during WWII, and the negotiations over the Charter took place at two American locations. The Americans put diplomatic power behind their plans during the two conferences that hashed out the terms of the treaty framing the UN: the first at Dumbarton Oaks from August to October, 1944, and the second in San Francisco from April to June, 1945. At Dumbarton Oaks, only the most important players–Russia, China, the US, and Great Britain–hashed out the most important parts of the Charter, but they brought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Climate Change And Resource Scarcity Climate Change & Resource Scarcity Resources throughout the United States are being exhausted an alarming rate. In fact, "95% of the original forests in the United States are now gone" (DiCaprio).Personally, I think this is a shocking and eye opening statistic. The statistic really gives you an insight on how much of the natural world humans have used in order to sustain the lifestyles they currently live. However, people cannot continue to use natural resources at the current rate because they won't be able to sustain us for the future. One component that is affecting our resources is climate change. Countries all over the world are experiencing changes in their climates that have caused droughts and conflicts over natural resources, such as water and oil. Additionally, a changing climate will cause healthcare systems all over the world to adapt to treating new diseases (Richardson, et al. 44). Earth is a planet that has many complex components that work in unison to allow humans and millions of other species to live on it. Stephen Emmott, author of Ten Billion states, "the main components of the systems are the atmosphere (the air we breathe), hydrosphere (the planet's water), cryosphere (the ice sheet and glaciers), and the biosphere (the planet's plants and animals" (36). Throughout the course of human history, humans and the Earth have lived in mutual harmony. Humans didn't alter the Earth's natural systems and cycles, and, as a result, humans have had a fairly ... • 33. The Rana Plaza Analysis In the world we live in today, everyone is now connected to each other. Whether we realize it or not, every action we commit can lead to a butterfly effect that can either save or ruin another person's life. In some cases this ability to potentially change someone's life can be good. For example, thanks to globalization there are now sweatshops in China that are bettering the lives of countless workers and their families. However, as we have seen the negative effects that come from globalization could be devastating. One event that exemplifies the disastrous effects of globalization would be the Rana Plaza collapse which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people (Julfikar, and Nida). This brings up the debatable argument of whether globalization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Human beings alone are limited. Our physical strength, mental strength, and stamina limit us to a specific set things we can and cannot accomplish. In order to overcome this, humans began to rely on each other to complete tasks we normally cannot complete by ourselves. Matt Ridley further illustrated this by demonstrating the evolution of ideas as we become more and more social. He describes this through the following story, "...if Oz makes two spears and Adam make two axes, and then they trade, then they will each have saved an hour of work. And the more they do this, the more true it's going to be, because the more they do this, the better Adam is going to get at making axes and the better Oz is going to get at making spears." (Matt Ridley, ted.com, When Ideas have Sex). This beneficial relationship is exactly why Globalization is inevitable. The amount that we can gain from each other is far too high for humans to remain isolated. Humans will always eventually find that working in larger groups to distribute work is far more efficient than working alone. Since humans would have always turned to communities of people, globalization will always come to realization. In order for humans to develop, it is necessary for people to work together. By working in communities, humans can produce better living standards, science, and technology. In extension, globalization has a similar effect as working in a community. Globalization makes it much easier to create and produce things of a higher quality at a much cheaper price. Due to the effect that it has, it is likely that human beings will always get to globalization eventually. • 35. Warnings In Julius Caesar Essay In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar ignores many warnings about his death. He ignores the soothsayer and his wife, Calphurnia's, warnings; he decides to visit the Capitol even though there are many omens like storms that split old oak trees, and a lion walking on the street without bothering to attack people. Similarly, the United Nations ignored many warnings of the Rwandan Genocide, in which almost a million Tutsis were slaughtered between April to July, 1994. Before the Rwandan Genocide, people at the UN headquarters paid no attention to the ethnic tensions that existed before the genocide, and they took no notice of a letter about the Hutus' plan to kill all the Tutsis. Key players in both Julius Caesar and the Rwandan Genocide ignore both environmental and personal warnings about impending danger. It also had to do with the fact that things were bad enough for Hutus that they were ready to believe that it was possible for the Tutsis to commit terrible crimes that might go unpunished by the Belgians. The consequence was that 300,000 Tutsis were driven out of the country, thereby making them an even smaller minority. • 37. The Death Of Julius Caesar By William Shakespeare And The... Warnings play a very important role in the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. The omens and nightmares in the play foreshadow the death of Julius Caesar that later resulted to chaos in Rome. The events that lead to the assassination of Julius Caesar are predicted by omens from characters such as his wife Calphurnia, the Soothsayer, Artemidorus and from the environment. Similarly, many warnings in the Rwanda history triggered the genocidal slaughter, the Rwandan Genocide. The warnings illustrated tensions between ethnics groups such as the Rwandan Revolution in 1959 and Dallaire's letter. Like Julius Caesar, member at the United Nation headquarter pay no attention to the ethnic tensions that existed before the genocide, which resulted to the slaughter of almost a million people. The keys plays in both Julius Caesar and the Rwandan Genocide ignore environmental, personal or social warnings about the impending danger. Julius Caesar's negligence and misinterpretation to the omens from the supernatural and prophecies result in his failure to prevent his death. Caesar's choice to ignore the soothsayer's warnings to "beware the Idles of March"(I.ii.18) represents his arrogance and misunderstanding of being invulnerable. As mentioned, the word "misery" describes the dark, blind side of person's life who does not read. Depression and other mental illnesses can start developing in adolescence and peak in adults around the age of 25 (Friedman). Untreated depression or any other form of mental illness can also lead to relapses, and an increased severity of their symptoms. Depression took a downward plunge in the 90's causing antidepressants such as Prozac to thrive on the market. Between 8% – 10% of Americans take an antidepressant, yet this is hardly a cure. The problem with antidepressants is that once an individual stops taking the drug, their pain and suffering may increase as they experience symptoms of withdrawal. Additional research is needed from scientists, and America as a whole needs to be better educated about mental illness and depression, so that families and friends can be better prepared to help their loved ones cope with these illnesses. Antidepressants need to not be relied on as much, better yet only used as a last resort to helping individuals. • 57. Ignorance In The Invisible Man The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family" (Annan). Although this phrase may contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily rejected notions of social responsibility and social education, due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a large group of people based on a variety of unrelated factors. This perspective can be used to better understand the message of the novel The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, a story about the life of a black man during the late 1920's or early 1930's, when racism against black people was prevalent. In this novel, the author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not necessarily equal power. The author accomplishes this by showing us the ignorance of those in power, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power. Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator's speech in the beginning of the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. This is shown to us by the author when the narrator is attempting to present his speech and makes an important observation, stating, "I spoke automatically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This quote said by Kofi Annan explains perfectly how not all people have to be of the same background or even the same culture but everyone is still a human being so you can not treat them as any less. America is a melting pot because of all the different cultures in the US today. Also, the US is working on rights for all by making it more convenient for people who do not speak English to have the same rights. While some people believe diversity separates a country, it can be argued that diversity creates unity because today the US is a melting pot, and they are working on rights for all. In the past, society created diversity, but in today's society it's starting to create unity in several ways. In source one there is two main ways that show the US is a melting pot. This statement shows that there is no "set" boundaries for new citizens unless they make them for themselves. Also, the quote "consider, for example, the bilingual voter's ballot. • 67. Globalization And The Laws Of Gravity "Arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity" (Kofi Annan, Fmr. United Nations Secretary General) Kofi Annan believes that globalization is unavoidable when he compares it to the laws of gravity which is inescapable, this is exemplified when he states that "arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity". He believes it is pointless because it is bound to happen and instead of fighting against globalization individuals should embrace and take the advantages it offers. It is known that the laws of gravity are conclusive and inevitable, Newton defines the law of gravity by explaining that every mass exerts a dependant, attracted force on every other mass. In relation to the laws of gravity, globalization can also be explained as a force that is inevitable, which is forced and or used by people. Kofi Annan has been the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize along with many other honorific awards and has served as a secretary–general in the United Nations. Kofi Annan is definitely aware of what happens globally and values the concept of world peace and development which is why it is understandable that he would support unification because global interaction and relations is what he believes will create a tranquil world. In addition to that, United Nations is an organization which promotes international unification, this would account for why Kofi wants to embrace globalization because the organization he represented and ... • 69. Kofi Annan Finding Common Ground In American society, two individuals often join hands and collaborate regardless of their different characteristics. Even though their identities may clash with each others' and be absolute opposites, their union remains unaffected. Their combined strength enables them to complete many tasks. In the unit of "Finding Common Ground," the selections focuses on the citizens of America to explore this concept of being unified despite diversity. Kofi Annan sums up this unit by saying, "[People] may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but [they] all belong to one human race," in which he expresses that though people are carry differences, they have the potential to unite. The main messages of this unit coincide with his words because the texts highlight that the people of any country can unify and be strong as a group if they have the resolve to do so. Ultimately, a nation derives strength from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While people tend to behave poorly towards other people who are different, they also have the capability of correcting that weakness. With immense dedication to the goal of unity, individuals can "build bridges that show [they] are better together" (Making the Future Better, Together page 7, lines 89–90). People will take actions that promote the concept of coming together if they commit themselves. Differences will not stand in the way then. Their willingness to unite will drive them to "build [a] beloved community" (Martin Luther King Jr., Making the Future Better, Together page 8, line 97), where people tolerate or even embrace the differences of one another. If people do not have determination, they will not be able to discard their tendency to not welcome other people who are different from them and remain separated. In the end, the realization of unity in a nation depends on whether its citizens are willing to devote themselves to striving for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Essay On African Americans The Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Kofi Annan, once said, "We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we only belong to one human race". When someone is given advantages or disadvantages because of their skin color, that is racial inequality. African Americans have a disadvantage when it comes to police, jobs, and even education. It is not right for people to be treated different just because of their skin color. America has not yet received racial equality, even after hundreds of years. First of all, in the past few years there have been multiple incidents proving that America has not yet achieved racial equality, and possibly never will. For example, there have been many incidents where a white cop has shot an African American, some armed and some not, but no matter the reason for why the cop shot them, it is almost immediately believed to be because of race (Black Lives Matter: 11 Racist Police Killings With No Justice Served). "'Unarmed black men are seven times more likely than whites to die by police gunfire,' the Washington Post reports on police brutality targeted at black Americans. The report estimated that an unarmed black man was shot and killed by police every nine days in 2015."(11 Facts about Racial Discrimination). This statistic was stated just last year, therefore proving that America has not yet reached racial equality and is quite a ways from it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 75. Humanitarian Assistance and Sierra Leone Essay Humanitarian Assistance and Sierra Leone Introduction When a country fails to provide the basic needs of survival for its people, the international community is faced with the issue of intervention. However, there exists no clearly defined doctrine to guide governments or humanitarian organizations in these matters. Some people believe that the protection of sovereignty is more important than the possible benefits of intervention, preferring that governments focus on domestic concerns. Opposing this are those who believe that humanitarian intervention is necessary to resolve many conflicts and that the preservation of life trumps all else. Still another mentality suggests that these two goals are not mutually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The RUF forces led attacks that left many dead and maimed civilians in their wake. They employed brutal tactics, involving cutting off hands, arms, and legs, while leaving many of these amputees alive. The other especially troubling aspect of the RUF's fighting tactics was its use of child militants. These children were abducted and forced to commit some of the worst atrocities of the war. Britain chose to intervene and put a stop to this cycle of violence. While it may have had ulterior motives for its intervention, as will be discussed below, it also felt a certain obligation to help Sierra Leone , which once was Britain 's colony. Sovereignty and Non–Intervention With the preservation of sovereignty a major issue to them, some people believe that the concept of non– intervention, or staying out of another country's affairs, is the proper course of action for the world. According to Adam Roberts in his article "Humanitarian Intervention Is Not Effective," the policy of non–intervention "provides a clear rule for limiting the uses of force by states and for reducing the risks of war between the armed forces of different states. . . . It involves respect for different societies and their religions, economic systems and political arrangements" (40). Those who take this poistion believe that referring to a military intervention as "humanitarian aid" skews the reality of what it actually involves. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Why Reform Is Necessary And Should Indeed Take Place Essay The UN was formed by the victors of World War 2 and so at that time it was fitting that those most powerful countries be granted special powers in the organisation. Now in the present day, there has been a growth in powerful states with just as much influence. It has been contested by many that the UN Security Council reflects and outdated past. With a huge change concerning the power politics of states, very little has been done to reflect this change in the Security Council (Global Policy Forum, 2016). For the longest time now, debates concerning Security Council reform have been on– going however with no possible agreement in sight. I stand with the argument that reform is necessary and should indeed take place. Throughout the rest of my essay, I am going to lay down major criticisms towards the Security Council that has called for its reform. Following that I will provide the different kinds of proposals that have been put forward and taken up the UN. Along with arguments for Security Council reform, comes major obstacles and towards the end of this paper I will discuss the challenges faced by the issue of reform altogether. Much talk of reform dates back to 1993 but only recently the pressure of reform was highly noted as a result of the UN's lamentable work in Syria (Gowan& Gordon, 2014). One major issue concerning reform is the idea of effectiveness. The United Nations Security Council is hugely criticised for not producing any significant effect in the work ...
