Planning is the most significant aspect of database design, and here is where most projects for database design will fail because the database does not meet requirements, does not meet expectations, or are just unmanageable. Here you need to be forward-thinking by planning for the future. What information needs to be stored or what things or entities do we need to store information about (Knauff, 2004)? What questions will we need to ask of the database (Knauff, 2004)?
A well-designed database promotes consistent data entry and retrieval and reduces the existence of duplication among the database tables. Relational database tables work together to ensure that the correct data is available when you need it.
The first consideration should be what is the database’s intended purpose. Understanding the purpose will help define the need. Some examples might be “to keep a list of customers,” “to manage inventory,” or “to grade students (Filemaker Staff, n.d.).” All stakeholders need to be involved in this process.
Second is Data integrity. Is the data accurate, consistent, and complete? What kind of categories does the data align with? Identifying these categories is critical to designing an efficient database because different types and amounts of data in each category will be stored. Some example categories might be sales that track “customers,” “products,” and “invoices,” or grades that track “students,” “classes,” and “assignments (Filemaker Staff, n.d.).” Once the categories have been defined the relations can be determined. A good exercise to help with this is to write these out in simple sentences:
“customers order products” and “invoices record customers’ orders.”
Now the organization of the data can begin. The categories above can be used as tables so common data can be grouped.
The third is security. Is the database secure? Will the current policy and rules be sufficient going forward? Who should have access? Who should have access to which tables (Nield, 2016)? Although the system has greatly improved the company’s ability to replenish inventory promptly, the company still has some problems. Planning is the most significant aspect of database design, and here is where most projects for database design will fail because the database does not meet requirements, does not meet expectations, or are just unmanageable. A good exercise to help with this is to write these out in simple sentences:

Now the organization of the data can begin. The categories above can be used as tables so common data can be grouped.

Alliance Supermarkets has been using a point-of-sale (POS) system for some time to track its inventory. The system uses a laser scanner to read the universal product code (UPC) on each item at the checkout container. The UPC is a number that uniquely identifies the product on which it appears. Currently, Alliance is using the UPC information to update inventory records for each item. Although the system has greatly improved the company’s ability to replenish inventory promptly, the company still has some problems. For example, sudden changes in demand for a particular item can catch the company by surprise as it bases inventory replenishment on historical demand patterns. Further, demand patterns and preferences may vary from one store to another depending on the customers served by each, but the inventory system groups all demand information together and treats each store equally. Finally, the manufacturers that make the products stocked by Alliance Supermarkets are always pressuring Alliance to help them target appropriate customers for special promotions and sales.
The chief information officer (CIO) of Alliance realizes that much more could probably be done with the data collected from its POS system. For example, the company could analyze the relationship between each product’s sales and weather patterns. It is even possible to analyze an individual customer’s buying habits and identify instances in which a customer may be persuaded to try a different brand of a certain product.
For this assignment be sure to address the following points:
Study this situation and formulate new and innovative uses of the information from the POS system. Ideally, these ideas should help Alliance better serve its customers by ensuring that adequate quantities of each item are available, that costs are kept low, and that customers are made aware of new products that may interest them.

Propose a new approach that could be used by Alliance by using the purchase information that can be obtained on individual customers.

Bryan's case is a good example of the ethical dilemmas that IT workers may encounter on the job. IT employees have privileged access to digital information, both personal and professional, throughout the company, and they have the technical prowess to manipulate that information. Ideally, corporate policy takes over where the law stops, governing workplace ethics to clear up gray areas and remove personal judgment from the equation as much as possible. But many corporate policies are ill defined, fail to keep up with new technologies and are poorly communicated to the IT department.

Sewing up the competition – innovation in the textile and clothing industry
Manufacturing doesn’t get much older than the textile and clothing industry. Since the earliest days when we lived in caves there’s been a steady demand for something to wrap around us to keep warm and to protect the more sensitive bits of our anatomy from the worst of the elements. What began with animal hides and furs gradually moved into a more sophisticated activity with fabrics woven from flax or wool – and with people increasingly specialising in the business.
In its early days this was very much a cottage industry – quite literally people would spin wool gathered from sheep and weave simple cloths on home-made looms. But the skill base – and the technology – began to develop and many of the family names we still have today – Weaver, Dyer, Tailor, for example – remind us of the importance of this sector. And where there were sufficient cottages and groups of people with such skill we began to see concentrations of manufacturing – for example, the Flemish weavers or the lace makers in the English Midlands. As their reputation – and the quality of their goods – grew so the basis of trading internationally in textile and clothing was established.
The small-scale nature of the industry changed dramatically during the Industrial Revolution. Massive growth in population meant that markets were becoming much bigger whilst at the same time significant developments in technology (and the science underpinning the technology) meant that making textiles and clothing became an increasingly industrialised process. Much of the early Industrial Revolution was around the cotton and wool industries in England and many of the great innovations and machinery – such as the Spinning Jenny – were essentially innovations to support a growing international industry. And the growth of the industry fuelled scientific research and led to devel.

- 1. Describe your organization's data structure. Create a comparison chart or table that lists and compares the features and functions of data with in your organization. These functions should be related to the Enterprise function. For example, email archives may be compressed for space, but have key discussion threads. The customer information database needs normalization if multiple persons enter data on clients. Create a data structure diagram for internal data at your organization and identify external support data to the organizations suppliers. Include two process diagrams, which show Local Area Network (LAN) location, network mapping location, and storage size. Create a reference log that identifies the resources and/or references you used in creating the diagram. Complete the diagrams using Microsoft® Visio® or another software of your choice, approved by your instructor. Submit the assignment to the Assignment Files tab.
