The simple past expresses
an action in the past taking
place once, never, several
times. It can also be used for
actions taking place one
after another or in the middle
of another action.

• Actions in the past taking place once, never or several times
Example: He visited his parents every weekend.
• Actions in the past taking place one after the other
Example: He came in, took off his coat and sat down.
• Actions in the past taking place in the middle of another action
Example: When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang.

6. How to use this verb
• This is the way to use the simple past:
Positive Negative Question
no differences I spoke. I did not speak. Did I speak?
7. affirmative Form
When we use simple past it is easier tan when we use simple present.
All pronouns use the same form of the verb in past. They never change:
I
liked cartoons.
You got A job
He needed Some money.
She had Two cars.
It happenned Too fast.
You wrote A letter.
We walked Along the park.
They did Their homework.
8. Negative form
When you need
to express a
negative
sentence
referring to the
past, you just
need to add the
auxiliary DID
before the verb in
its bare (original)
form:
I
didn’t like cartoons.
You didn’t Get A job
He didn’t Needed Some money.
She didn’t Have Two cars.
It didn’t Happen Too fast.
You didn’t Write A letter.
We didn’t Walk Along the park.
They didn’t Do Their homework.
9. Interrogative Form
Making questions
in simple past is
similar to
negative
statements.
You start with the
auxiliary DID
followed by the
verb in its bare
form:
Did I know you?
Did you work?
Did he write anything?
Did she go anywhere?
Did it work?
Did you understand?
Did we need anything?
Did they like anybody?
10. REMEMBER ! ! !
• It is very important to know the difference between REGULAR and
IRREGULAR VERBS.
• Regular verbs take –d, -ed or –ied in their past form.
• Irregular verbs change their form.
