To Kill A Mockingbird Essay In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of
innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all
lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their
loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character
responded differently to their loss of innocence. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbirdthe character of
Boo Radley is the first to suffer the loss of his innocence. As a teen, Boo experienced trouble with
the law and for his consequences his father imprisoned him in his own house. Because of the harsh

With the racial tension so high during this time period, Tom's innocence was lost before he could
even defend himself. This was shown through Atticus's reply to Scout's question of, "Will we
win?" Atticus answered no because the case was lost before it began. Tom Robinson's response to
his loss of innocence was to simply run away from the problem that had befallen him. For his
attempted escape Tom suffered the highest consequence, "They shot him,' said Atticus. 'He was
running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at
the fence and started climbing over" (235). Due to Tom's decision on how to respond, he was
killed even though he was placed in his position no thanks to himself. Tom Robinson chose poorly
when it came to his response towards his loss of innocence and it cost him his life. The main
character of the novel, Scout, was the only character that suffered a loss of innocence and
responded in a way that did not ruin her life. During the novel Scout gradually lost her innocence
due to the fact of her ever–increasing knowledge of the world. Being the child that she was, Scout
had a kind of blind faith in her community that it was as good and as moral as she believed it to be,

1.Despite the fact that William is young and his mom is very strict, she allows him to go on the
road with the band since she wants him to experience the world. He was going to school with
people who were thirteen and his mother admits that he is not even twelve, he is eleven. She
recognizes that William is incredibly smart, considering the fact that he skipped the fifth grade.
For these reasons, she tells William that he could spend that extra time traveling in Europe.
Although he does not ask to go to Europe, he asks to go to LA with Stillwater which she agrees to;
she's already okay with him going to Europe, so it makes sense that she allows him to go to Los

One song that really echoes Lester's sentiment for me is the song Time by Pink Floyd. I first
heard the song years ago; I would listen to it often since I really enjoyed the guitar solo. I never
really paid much attention to the lyrics but recently the lyrics really speaks to me. They talk about
how when you are young, it seems as if there is an unlimited amount of time, yet before you know
it, you lose all the time you thought you had. As a senior, this rings true for me as it feels like I

1. Who is the author of this book? What influences in his/her life contributed to the writing of this
book?
Harper Lee, best known for her book, "To Kill a Mockingbird" was born on April 28, 1926. After
reading the book as well as her biography, I feel "To Kill a Mockingbird" was roughly based on
Lee's own life. For instance, just like the character Atticus Finch, lees father was a lawyer as well.
In 1919, lee's father defended two black men accused of murder, a cases ultimately lost due to
racial injustice. The novel may have also been influenced by the Scottsboro Trials of the 1930s,
where two white women accused nine black men of rape. A similar case which Scout's father
defends in the book. Other similarities such as family, friends, upbringing and the resemblance of
scout's personality to her own helped develop the characters as well as a storyline for her book. I
felt the purpose of writing this novel was to highlight the injustice due to racial discrimination that
existed in the late 1930's.

The main character that comes to mind when thinking of the theme at hand would be Atticus
finch and the trial of Tom Robinson which he was made to defend. Although Atticus knows that
he will be despised or even murdered for taking on this case, he nonetheless does what he believes
is right. As he mentions in the book "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting
the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you
begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what." Atticus's goal in the book was to

Blacks were persecuted more harshly and treated much more unfairly in the 30s. During this time
period Jim Crow laws basically made it to where blacks didn't have any rights at all. Jim Crow
laws started in the 1880s and lasted into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced
segregation through "Jim Crow" laws. From Delaware to California, and from North Dakota to
Texas, many states could impose legal punishments on people for consorting with members of
another race. The most common types of laws forbade intermarriage and ordered business owners
and public institutions to keep their black and white clientele separated (Tischauser 57–68). The Jim
Crow laws affected Tom Robinson's life in many ways. He simply was segregated from the white
population. Tom was discriminated by almost everyone in the community he lived in. During this
time this was normal and blacks were thought to be inferior to whites. Some English Dictionaries
define 'Jim Crow' as the name for an implement that can straighten or bend iron rails; or, along with
'Jim Crowism', systems or practices of racial discrimination or segregation. The American English

not always make the rest of the community like her, but it does mean that the kids will respect and
trust her.

I agree with To Kill a Mockingbird being a book with values of strong contemporary national
significance. I agree with this quote because of the racial segregation going on in America at the
time. An example of this was how even though Tom couldn't of beaten Mayella Ewell he was still
convicted guilty because of his skin color. Although this the novel does show a group of people that
don't judge based on this. Another example is how everyone in Maycomb judge the Cunningham
family based on their lack of money. ToKill a Mockingbird shows the struggles thrown at families
whether it be based on race or financial strength, like when Miss Maudie's house burns down or the
racial remarks thrown at Atticus and his family. And people like Boo Radley who seen villainous
are just regular people. Overall this is a novel of strong contemporary national significance.

Mockingbird
Mockingbirds, harmless and joyful creatures that do not create havoc among others. Throughout the
story mockingbirds are portrayed as a symbol of innocence, representing characters such as; Tom
Robinson, Boo Radley and even Scout. The title To Kill A Mockingbirdrefers to the killing of
innocence which relate to the events that occur in the novel such as the death and trial of Tom

On the Sunday evening Atticus travels to the jail to stand guard and protect Tom Robinson as he
was notified of possible "trouble and disturbance at the Jail'. When Jem and Dill run into the crowd,
led by Scout, they are suddenly aware that they have walked into a bad situation. Though Jem
realises the situation is precarious, he made a decision to stay and help Atticus protect Tom even
after his father's thorough protests. Dill and Scout on the other hand, are still too young to

Through the course of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem encounters a series of
events that cause him to grow up. During Tom Robinson's trial, Jem's eyes were opened to the
racism and prejudice of the South: loss of innocence, a major theme in the novel, is a realization of
the cruelty and injustice in the world, and that one must develop a tolerance for it. Jem is young and
carefree in the beginning of the novel. He is just starting to take on the responsibilities of an older
brother: "Jem condescended to take me to school the first day, a job usually done by one's parents,

  • 1. To Kill a Mockingbird Essay To Kill A Mockingbird Essay In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character responded differently to their loss of innocence. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbirdthe character of Boo Radley is the first to suffer the loss of his innocence. As a teen, Boo experienced trouble with the law and for his consequences his father imprisoned him in his own house. With the racial tension so high during this time period, Tom's innocence was lost before he could even defend himself. This was shown through Atticus's reply to Scout's question of, "Will we win?" For his attempted escape Tom suffered the highest consequence, "They shot him,' said Atticus. 'He was running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over" (235). Tom Robinson chose poorly when it came to his response towards his loss of innocence and it cost him his life.
