population. Quite surprisingly, compared to the global population, the United States still accounts
for over 23% of the world's amount of incarcerated peoples, therefor giving the United States first
place in the running for the largest amount of incarcerated people. The reasons the United States
incarceration rates are so high is driven by the disproportionate incarceration of minorities. The
chances of an African American being incarcerated are six times greater than a Caucasian person.
If that number doesn't seem that high to you, then take into account that for every ten Caucasians
there are about sixty African Americans incarcerated. You can also look to the right to get an idea

The housing crisis that I mentioned earlier and resulting backlash through the entire economy has
been building for awhile now but it has just came into the forefront in the past couple of weeks.
We really haven't faced a downturn like this since the Depression. Last Tuesday, January 22, the
Dow Jones industrial average fell almost 600 points and was already down 9% in 2008 (Gross 1).
Immediately the Federal Reserve took action and cut the interest rates three–quarters of a percentage
point, the biggest cut in 24 years. Today, not even a week later, the Fed again cut interest rates, this
time by a half–point (Aversa 1). This move is an effort to keep the economy out of a recession by
getting money back into the banks and encouraging them to keep lending credit to turn the
economy upward. Whether or not it will work remains to be seen in the coming months. The
government also announced another move to a couple weeks ago to help get the economy going
again and avoid or slow down a recession. President Bush and the House are currently developing a
$145 billion stimulus plan that would give tax relief to citizens by sending them individual checks
for $300 and up. The plan would put over $100 billion into the hands of consumers and the
government hopes that money would be spent and put back into the economy (Wolf 1). While all
these things are good news for the struggling economy, most economic experts believe that a
recession of some kind may be impossible to avoid

The loans are what were financing the war for Britain and France. Furthermore, the British and the
French were also purchasing arms on United States credit. The Americans wanted to make sure they
got paid back so they entered war to ensure that they go their money repaid to them.
Politics executed a part in America entering the war also. Propaganda from both sides determined
America's decision. President Wilson did not want to go to war, but when Teddy Roosevelt wanted
to run for anther term, Wilson felt intimidated and declared that there would be a preparation
program and a chance that America would go to war. By taking part in the war, America was
validating itself as a world power.
Ideology was another piece that fit into the now solved puzzle of why America entered the war.
Wilson wanted to make the world safe for democracy. Ideology was seen partly for idealistic
justification. The inhabitation of Belgium and the sinking of the Lusitania changed many people's
minds in the United Stated of Germany.
President Wilson had cautioned citizens from taking side in the war in fear of jeopardizing wider US
policy, during the time of neutrality. Untied States maintained this neutrality despite increasing
pressure on President Wilson after the sinking of the Lusitania. This neutrality would crumble when
Germany started to introduce its unrestricted submarine

living quarters until the colonies. The colonies were the first established towns by the Europeans.
