The Canterbury Tales Character Sketch
Author Geoffrey Chaucer describes in–depth several characters who intend to embark on a religious
pilgrimage in his piece The Canterbury Tales. One of the prominently featured characters is the
Friar. The Friar is certainly one of the most unorthodox characters in the piece who is the antithesis
of the character qualities expected of a friar. Chaucer's description and implications reveal that the
Friar is an adulterous, cold–hearted individual with a disingenuous personality that is rooted in his
self–absorbed nature. Chaucer's description of the Friar is quite extensive comparative to that of the

218–219). The Friar blatantly contradicts his calling to uphold Scripture by granting absolution in
exchange for a bribe. This clearly indicates that the Friar is not concerned with the welfare of
others but rather is interested in profiting from their sins. The Friar's inconsiderate nature is further
revealed by Chaucer when he describes how the Friar would react to an encounter with a direly
impoverished woman. Chaucer predicts, "Should a woman have no shoes against the snow, So
pleasant was his 'In principio' He would have her widow's mite before he went" (68 lines 245–247).
It is quite uncommon to characterize a friar, whose duty it is to minister to the poor, as an
individual who would express no willingness to aid a woman in desperate poverty. Yet Chaucer
describes the Friar as one who would exhibit such an indifferent, cold–hearted response. In both of
these scenarios, Chaucer illustrates the Friar's contrasting interactions with the public and his lovers,
which reveals his disingenuous personality. Not only does the discrepancy between public and
private interactions indicate the Friar's disingenuous personality, but also Chaucer's description of

Biographical Sketch Charlotte Bronte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire in 1816, to Patrick and
Maria Bronte. Maria died five years later and left the care of her six children to her unpleasant aunt,
Elizabeth Branwell. Within a few years, Charlotte's older sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, died from
tuberculosis due to a typhoid outbreak at the Cowan Bridge School. The school also largely
represented the Lowood Institution in Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre. Charlotte completely despised
Cowan Bridge School, and she bashed the academy for its "harsh religious doctrine and unsanitary
conditions" (Shuttleworth). Bronte expresses her dreadful experience at Cowan Bridge School in
Jane Eyre, where Jane also endures harsh treatment at the Lowood Institution. However, Bronte
mitigated the dreadfulness in her novel since pamphlets were published defending the school and
its proprietors. Charlotte's father rarely communicated with her and her siblings, and they also had
little contact with the outside world. As a result, the children would spend their time creating
imaginary stories on tiny sheets of paper. Charlotte created a fantasy realm called Angria, which
was ruled by the Duke of Zamorna. He was supposed to be an evil man who was "ruled by strength
of will and feeling and easily conquered women," yet women could not resist their uncontrollable

In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character and protagonist is 16
year old Katniss Everdeen, a strong and selfless young woman who is far more mature than her
age suggests. As the main provider for her family after her father died, Katniss had to become
responsible and resourceful at a young age, which forced her to participate in rebellious behavior in
order to keep her family alive. She is an unselfish and protective character, putting herself in danger

Throughout the novel you can see her other acts of care, such as when she takes 12 year old Rue
under her wing in the middle of the games, and also how she refuses to leave Peeta when he is
injured. "I can almost hear Haymitch groaning as I team up with this wispy child. But I want her.
Because she's a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me of Prim" (pg 201). In
this quote the author Suzanne Collins is showing that Katniss is teaming up with Rue, rather than
killing her, which is what would get her farther in the Games but she doesn't because she reminds
her of Prim, and wants to protect her. During the weeks over which the Games occur, Katniss'
character does not essentially change. What changes are her circumstances, and most of the novel
watches her dealing with the situations she encounters. She does not begin to seek attention once
she becomes a celebrity and begins doing television interviews. Rather, she always tries to figure out
how to get through the interviews so she can succeed in winning the games and go back to her life.
The games do not turn her into an unsympathetic killer, and the only times she does kill, she does

character, Jane Eyre. Jane, an orphan, is raised by her aunt (her deceased uncle's wife) who wants

with a girl called Helen Burns, ends up dying of consumption. Eventually, Jane gets a job as a

Shakuntala, according to the genre of the play, is a nataka. It embodies a rich story and acts it out.
The play is not a complete manifestation of the Mahabharata but only a small section of it. Based on
the Sanskrit epic, Shakuntala possesses a higher directionality, many indications of physical
movements and psychological turbulence, as well as a romantic tension characterized by personal
flaws.
The tradition of classical Sanskrit theater concentrates on the idea of abhihaya. It comprises
gestures, stage sets, speech, and involuntary emotions. In Shakuntala, every component is fully
displayed. For body languages, the King observes Shakuntala from behind the scene, and the
frequent movements of body, for example "approaching hastily" (77), "aside" (87), and "watching"
(66), endows the audience with a sense of dynamic changes of positions that are in line with the
linear development of the plot. Emotions are also heavily emphasized in the presence of all
characters. For Shakuntala, it is the most obvious: she appears angry in front of the King, and facing
her friends, she exhibits nuanced psychological activities by certain gestures and actions like
"knitting the eyebrow," "sighs," etc. (83–89; also through facial expressions) to express her curiosity,
interests, nervousness and excitement. The speech may be tacit or exposed. For example, the King,
when seeing Shakuntala and her friends, often speaks to himself. Even if there is such tacit speech,
the idea of poetry and poetic techniques is shown. For instance, when the King makes self–inquire of

A Man Who Had No Eyes: Markwardt Character Sketch In the short story "A Man Who Had No
Eyes" by MacKinlay Kantor, one of the main characters is Markwardt, a blind beggar who comes up
to another man to ask for money. Markwardt is the type of person who is so self–indulgent; he will
do just about anything to get what he wants which in this case is money. Instead of looking at the
brighter side of things, he looks at everything negatively and uses mendacity and psychological
manipulation through the usage of his sad stories to bring pity to the people he is speaking to in
order to gain his own rewards. Markwardt is an old and disheveled man who lost his eyesight in a
chemical explosion that occurred 14 years prior to the events of the story. Markwardt is described
as being a shaggy, thick–necked fellow, wearing a greasy coat with lapels and pockets, presumably
to store money. He not only has a long beard, which further exemplifies his age, but also long
nails, most likely due to a lack of proper hygiene. Furthermore, due to the fact that he is blind and
homeless, he carries a battered cane to allow for walking along with a black pouch that he hangs
over his shoulders. Moreover, his physical size is depicted to be quite large, at least, larger than the
normal man. Overall, Markwardt is illustrated as the average homeless man with the added

These kinds of images help me define the character. Puritans are kinds of people that no one in
the play, Twelfth Night, will like. This is evident in the quote, "Marry, sir, sometimes he is a kind
of puritan", said by Maria in act II, scene III. This shows me that Malvolio cannot be friends much
with anyone with an appearance and behavior like a puritan. A steward is a person who is
employed on a large estate to oversee the other servants, manage domestic concerns and keep the
accounts. This helps me define that Malvolio has a big responsibility and position in Olivia's
household. Another image that would associate with Malvolio is a fool. This is evident because
he falls for the love letter prank and dresses like a fool in an indecent manner just to win Olivia's
heart. He also falls for the trick when Feste disguises as Sir Topas then back to Feste and Malvolio
is unaware of that. The word somber also associates with him because he is mostly grave throughout
the play. He rarely smiles until he finds out that Olivia "loves" him.
This is my character sketch of Malvolio and as you can see, he is very unique and nothing like the

"You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have." Hemingway's
novel "The Old Man and the Sea" tells about an old man and his battle in the sea to catch the most
colossal fish he's ever seen. The themes presented in this novel include the honor in struggle, defeat
and death. The protagonist in "The Old Man and the Sea" is a weak and gaunt, yet optimistic old
fisherman named Santiago who hasn't caught any fish for 84 days. In the novel, Santiago goes
further out to the sea than he's ever been and he manages to hook an enormous marlin, facing the
biggest trial of his life; catching the marlin and taking it home without meeting his own death first.
This trial reveals the extent of his strength as hinted in the quote above. Through Santiago's
endurance, perseverance and knowledge he proves to the reader that anyone is capable of achieving
their ambitions even when it seems impossible to do so.
Throughout the novel, Hemingway portrays his conception of the world in a way that shows the
reader that death, destruction and pain are unavoidable aspects of life. In this point of view, to

not give a great deal of information about her life before the book opens, the reader sees her great
attitude towards life. Because of her great sin, she was shunned in the Puritan society. Hester's

Such as being brave, kind and, determined. The books address many times however we will only be
taking from the second novel, The chamber of secrets. In this essay we will explain why he was put
into gryffindor in the first place. We will also cover examples of his heroic traits in the specific book
the chamber of secrets also. In this essay I will show you exactly how Harry Potter
Is brave and also kind to others and how he is determined to finish the task at hand at all costs.
The first adjective I stated was the factor of Harry Potter being brave.
If I were to only have to choose adjective to describe Harry Potter it would be just that, "Brave".
There are many instances of Harry Potter being brave in the novels. In chamber of secrets however
there seems to be more instances of bravery than any other novel in my opinion.
Being brave has a lot more to do than you just standing up to your fears. It has many other
complications like standing up for something that you think is right when others tell you to stand
down. Bravery is doing things that others would not. With those statements of bravery let's prove
how Harry Potter shows traits of bravery in the chamber of secrets. In chapter fifteen, "Aragog",
Harry stays on the trail when Ron wants to leave yelling "No Ron we have to get this done". He
shows bravery by staying in the forest when fear overtakes his body. He also shows bravery in
chapter sixteen, "The chamber of secrets", when he fights and kills the basilisk to stop Tom
Riddle from killing Ginny Weasley by "Throwing his whole weight into the sword and plunging
the sword into the roof of the basilisk's mouth. Those are all instances of bravery and shows just
how brave Harry Potter is in the second novel, "The chamber of secrets". The second word I would
use to describe Harry Potter is being kind.
Being kind is a good trait to have not only just in heroines but in all humans alike. Harry Potter

He observed to be like a middle age frat boy after a party. He was wearing a half open bathrobe, he

the house of Bob Cratchit's, scrooge's clerk. The cratchits are very poor, but happy with what they
have. There youngest child is very sick, he has to use a crutch, but he is very brave and open about
his sickness and says it is a visual reminder about how Christ healed the lame and made the blind

Scrooge wakes up to a ghost, ready to take Scrooge places to try to change his attitude. Scrooge
encountered the spirit yet to come. The first stop they make in the night was in the city to
examine some businessman talking about someone dead, but they laugh and wonder if people
are actually going to go to his funeral. There second stop they make is to examine more
businessmen, but they care even less. The third stop they make is to the shady side of town to a
rag and bone merchant that will sale Scrooge's belongings. The only people who have feelings
about him dying was the feeling of happiness. The fourth stop they make that night was to Bob
cratchit's house. The mother was telling all the matured kids that it was there time to pull jobs since
