1. Traits Of A Good Graphic Designer
Truth be told it takes a lot of work to
become a graphic designer. You need
intelligence a good understanding of
the industry, skill and most
importantly; talent (which not easily
learnt).
Graphic designers are fundamentally
artists and because of this should have
an exceptional understanding of
composition, colours and design. They
are also multimedia experts, and
should be able to use every tool at
their disposal to produce and convey a
coherent message through their
designs, ideas and branding.
Skills required
A good graphic designer will possess skills in technology, art and business. They
should be a highly creative individual with a good flair for design, creativity,
fresh, forward-thinking ideas. They should never be afraid to try something new
even if it doesn’t work first time. That is part of the design game and it can always
be put it down to experience and hopefully; learn from it. No one ever made their
name in graphic design by playing it safe. So don’t ever be afraid to experiment.
Technology
Graphic design has evolved rapidly in the last 20 or so years. It is now also a
particularly technical position as most modern designs are conceived and
developed on a computer, (usually Apple Macs).
Another thing worth mentioning is that a good graphic designer should be able to
adapt and move forward with the technology as it is an extremely fast paced
industry with new programs, updates and concepts released on an almost daily
basis.
Freelance tips
It’s always a good idea to work from established agency to learn the ropes before
going freelance. The best way to make the transition is to take on a few jobs lost
in full employment, so if you like it and then expand your business from there. As
well as having good design and technology skills you will also need to have good
interpersonal skills to boot. The reason being is that if you want to go freelance
then you will need to be up to talk to clients on their level and on their terms. So
though you got into graphic design purely design unfortunately you cannot
overlook the business aspects as it is part and parcel of being a graphic designer.
2. Tips: The graphic designers of today should be highly skilled technicians,
excellent communicators, knowledgeable and above all talented artists. They
should be intelligent and possess exceptional business skills and interpersonal
skills and just live for the design and creating.
