MOLLY: “ So, Dave and Victoria, tell us who is this webinar for today and why is it so important?” DAVE : “ We’ve spent a lot of time putting this presentation together to help out other attorneys who have faced the same struggles and challenges we have. Rodney Dangerfield used to say, “I don’t get no respect.” I am tired of lawyers being caricatured, made the butt of jokes, and just not valued as we should be. Most of the time, the attorneys I know really want to help people. We enjoy what we do and we want to bring respect back to the legal profession and be recognized for the good we do. But besides the lack of respect, it’s not easy to make a go of it as an attorney these days. After working your tail off to pass the bar, you tend to believe that once you hang out that shingle, clients will begin to pour in. And when they do, all they do is complain that you don’t return their phone calls and take too long to get their work done. Like many attorneys, I’ve struggled – and in the beginning, I thought there was something wrong with me. But I realized it wasn't my fault - law school failed to teach me how to run a business. In fact, I have found while law school taught me how to think like a lawyer, it destroyed my ability to think like an entrepreneur. But I had an advantage most lawyers don’t, I grew up in an entrepreneurial family. I anchored to that to become successful. I have since discovered that you can be a great lawyer and a great entrepreneur - but it requires different skills and knowledge.” VICTORIA : “ I agree with Dave. In fact, Molly, I feel like we'd be doing a huge disservice by NOT getting this information out there for lawyers. Because when people go in and meet with legal counsel and that attorney doesn’t have the tools to really convey the value that they’re going to provide to them…. and they walk out of the office without saying yes, that’s doing a disservice to the people who really do need a lot of help. Victoria: Went to law school, studied, etc. Graduated and started my own practice right out of law school in 2002. I went to all the CLEs, purchased basic software, and worked really long hours. Chained to my desk, if you will. A prisoner of my work. … .
Victoria: “ What I know now that I didn’t know then is that without a system, without a network, without on-going support – a lawyer will always be on the hamster wheel to nowhere. You’ll reach a cap on the annual income you can earn…. You’ll become frustrated, burned out and disenfranchised with the legal profession…. And odds are you’ll quit or work miserably for decades, negatively affecting the people around you – including your clients, your family and your community.”
Dave: “ I realized I needed new thinking. I finally realized that I didn’t have any real systems in place to work for me.
