All of these things can affect our nervous system and how it
works.
3. Injuries
Wounds and other injuries caused by strong impacts on our body can affect
our nervous system.
Head injuries and injuries to the spinal cord are most dangerous.
Head injuries can damage the brain and cause changes in
the way the nerves work. They can causes illnesses like
amnesia, loss of memory.
4. Degenerative diseases
Degenerative illnesses are caused by the decline of neurones in part of the
brain.
One of the most common degenerative diseases is Alzheimer's.
People who have Alzheimer’s disease lose their memory,
become disorientated, forget basic things, like how to speak…
5. Drugs
Drugs are substances that cause alterations in the nervous system, and
therefore in our behaviour and our general being.
All drugs are dangerous for our health, even though some are legal
like alcohol and tobacco.
6. How to look after your nervous system
We can do certain things to help look after our nervous system:
• Sleep the right amount (a minimum of 8 hours a day)
• Avoid drugs, including alcohol and tobacco.
• Avoid injury. Be careful and protect certain parts of your
body. Wear a helmet, your seatbelt…
